How to get BEST MPG on Rx8 (~20-22mpg)
#126
No question about better mileage with age. My 2004 has original engine 227k and still runs like a jet. I drive it hard 3-5k rpms and engine is better for it. Get approx 21 mpg.

If I have the most miles on any 2004 RX 8 (228K now) and as original owner, I would be glad to provide original sale docs for the all time RX8 Big Boy trophy.
Regarding Forum info, the godfather of all relevant info on RX8 is Forum member RIWWP, check out his comments and user guides about any and all ills, etc.
Frankly, I wasn't even aware of the Forum until I Googled for for info on clutch issues, etc. it has been a fantastic source of info, assistance, and recommendations.
Another tip for performance and mileage is that I add a can of Seafoam, every other tankfull. I don't know if that is overkill, but it does wonders for the performance.
Enjoy your 8.

I'd be interested in seeing what the inside of your engine looks like, borescoping it. There hasn't been any conclusive evidence or proof on how effective seafoam via the gas tank is in terms of carbon removal/cleaning, but at a guess (just a guess) is that it does work to some degree, and your seals have been much better for it.

Just made a 301.1 mile round trip in my 04 RX8 MT, 148,801.1 with the original engine, before the low fuel light came on ~1 mile from the gas station. It worked out to 21.73 mpg with 13.9 at fill up. I have only owned it for 2 months but it was owned by a local Mazda dealer whose Manager used it as a company car from new until 7-14 doing the recommended maintenance. I have only changed the radiator and battery. I took it to a different Mazda dealer for an oil change and the mechanic came out after working on it and told me he was amazed to see it had an original engine. . Very happy so far. Coils, wires and plugs next on the to do list.

Mpg
Just completed 1000 miles, over two weekends, normal driving, but not over gunning it, and going 60 to 90, and returned 26 to the gallon, and used 600ml of oil, and smiled all the way.....,

Since using the powerband is necessary for clearing out gunk from the combustion chamber, its silly to try and go about getting "the best gas mileage". Getting better milage is one thing, but why even give it a second thought if you are above 18 mpgs. The worse mileage I get the more fun I have. If you are really hurting financially from gas, buy a dd.
The most fun I ever had was when I got about 7-9 mpgs on almost a half a tank.

I've kept track of a lot of the miles since I have owned my car and have averaged 21.4 overall. I tend to get 18-20 in winter and 21-23 in summer. On road trips I get 23-25 driving 80+ MPH.
I just drive it normally, I'm not hypermileing or anything.

I bought my RX-8 new in Feburary 2004 and still own it, so I have a fair amount of data (mostly in my head though!) about fuel economy. I was on an early flash when I first got the car and was getting 17-18 mpg in mixed driving. My fuel economy increased with each successive update from Mazda until I was getting ~20mpg with mixed driving and slightly more than 22 mpg all freeway. I had a personal best of 24.5 mpg once. If someone has bought an RX-8 used it would be a good idea to have it checked to make sure it has the latest flash. Here 11 years since the car came out that sounds almost impossible, but I bet there are plenty of cars out there that have never been updated.
Now with around 68k on the odometer and not driving it as much I am getting 18-19 mpg, but I also don't get onto the freeway often. The car gets driven like it should and I have fun in it. Part of my mpg loss is definitely that I don't drive that particular car as often, sometimes it goes 2 months or more before needing a fill up.
