A few simple Q's

I'm a happy new owner with a few questions.

1) When I start the car and let the clutch out I get a bearing noise that sounds like the throwout bearing. If the clutch is in, the noise is not there. Do the throwout bearings go quickly (45k) on these cars.

2) Around 6000 rpm I get a scraping sound. It only last from about 6000 rpm to about 7200 rpm. Could this be related to number 1.

3) I'm at half way on the oil dipstick. Is this the point for half a quart or a full quart.

I love this car. In two weeks, I've put 1100 miles on it and I only work 4 miles from home. This car is amazing and very addicting to drive. Now I just need to get to a track day.

I dont see why you have to react like that twinkie. He was actually asking (minus question 3) specific questions as oppossed to most people who post things such as "How do I make my rx8 faster?" or "How do I gain torque" etc, etc, etc...

Also, for you to say this whole forum searches is hilarious

1. Normal for car
2. Auto or manual - for a manual smthg like this occurs at 8-9K. Nothing to do with #1
3. <unclear what "half way" is> Just top it up to full anytime you check it.

Umm...maybe cause we have had the same questions at least three times in the past 7 days alone...

Second...this forum is known for flaming the newbs and thus I am keeping the hazing tradition to beat it into thier heads...

Finally, if you've been here long enough you know better and search...everyone does it in order to keep from being flamed...if you dont and post a question then people like me whip out the blow torches just for fun...

To say that my reaction is less then normal is hilarious...

You're definitely doing things right driving as much as possible! Once you get to a track day, you'll not be able to stop that giant grin spreading from ear to ear! The car is entertaining on the street, but is truly at home on the track and was designed and tested there, so it gives the most pleasure to its driver in that environment.

Enjoy and congrats on your new car!!

Thumbs up

WELCOME TO THE CLUB! even tho i do mostly all my work and have the dealer do only recalls or wro work i have found myself searching the board for anyone with the same problem.i've had my first rotory for three plus years now and if you take the time to do your search for the questions at hand maybe the little devil won't show it's fork! there is so much to read at times but i am never mad about what i have learned even as an ole geezzer and been working on cars for thirty plus years.knowledge of the rotory is really off the charts of engine and performance a lot of people will never have a chance to see, hear or drive like we do as a mazda rx8 owner!

See...eventually the goodness comes outta the woodwork and balances out the evilness...ying and yang...a balance must exist in all things...

My job is to haze and balance out the nice people on here...else things would get boring pretty quick...

Back to your regularly scheduled newbie hazing orientation still in progress...

PS: Search! Heh...

This is obsurd. In the time it would've taken you to write that you could have just answered his questions, so why wouldn't you?!

In the time it took the OP to post this thread he could have found the answers to his three questions with a couple simple searches. One of which is already answered in the OWNERS MANUAL.

The search function is a valuable tool which at some point we all must utilize.

1) This car has a noisy gearbox - is it a bad noise or just the sounds of the gearbox spinning - i.e. is it a loud/nasty noise, or just a whirring/spinning mechanism noise. Worth getting checked out.

2) Scraping at 6K - can't even imagine that that sounds like ...

3) The "travel" between full and empty on the stick is 1 quart. Therefore, at half-down, you need 16 ounces of oil (1/2 quart) to put things right again. I fill at half-way each time I fill it. 1/2 quart at a time.

Enjoy.

1) probably normal. the engine idles at a slightly different sound w/ the clutch in and out. also when the car warms up the anti-lock brakes click too if u start driving right away.
2) please define "scraping." bear in mind the rotary engine has a unique hum. unless it sounds like something is broken- it's probably just normal.
3) if the dipstick is half way, u can add about 1/2 quart. (i usually just add in 1/4 quart increments just to be safe. u don't want to overfill either.)

congrats & welcome.

Hey man, that was funny. Well done. But, if you're going to correct my grammar at least make sure your own is proper.

What's wrong with using would've instead of would have? Did I really make a mistake there?

Nah..cause then the irony of me correcting you and "uselessly" using other words and then posting the pic "would have" been lost...

You see wordplay is kinda like foreplay...gotta keep em guessin...

1. There is a whirring sound that is completely normal when the clutch is out in neutral. Since the trans is mounted right under your arm you can hear a little bit more than most engines and you can hear the input shaft moving. When the throwout bearing goes it more sounds like a squeaking sound instead of a whirling sound.

2. If the sound is more like a scream then a scrape and it happens at 2 points one around 3700 and at another point above that RPM that for some reason escapes me right now. Someone help me out here, when does the second valve open?
I always though it was the sound of air flowing past the butterfly valves as they open in our 3 stage intake system. This only happens at WOT not while cruising, the sound not the valve opening. If this sound is constant then i would seriously get this checked right away.

3. Always top it off, you'll find how much to put in after a few thousand miles. I think its actually a 1.25 between top to bottom so judge it yourself.

We should start a spelling/grammar police thread!! You can list the people you've ticketed and their offense.
