What mods can i do to increase my mpg?
i dont think im getting 18 like i should..i go through gas 3 times a week on driving normally...i cant afford that.

my old contour got 20mpg and it would last me almost a week.

I was thinking a cai would help alittle? not too sure.

When you fill up next time zero out the trip odometer.
Next time you fill up note the gallons of gas it took to fill back up the car.
Divide the miles driving according to the trip odometer by the gallons of gas you put in.
Example 250 miles on the odo & 13.5 gallons to fill up 250 / 13.5 = 18.5 MPG.

But based on your car being a 4-speed AUTO and the general traffic in your area 18 MPG would be about the best you can expect. The only thing you can do to improve MPG is to increase the amount of time you spend in high gear.

Drive less aggressive

Civic

Comparing your Contour mileage to the RX-8 is a big mistake...

mods that lower weight, premium fuel, clean filters & fluids, keep a good distance from the car in front (less braking, more coasting gives better milage than following too closely), max air pressure in tires, avoid traffic jam areas

first you need to actually tell us what your current mpg is, what style of driving you have, where you drive, and no you may not get 18mpg, most people on here actually dont.

and you bought a sports car, I mean really what were you expecting??

One thing to start with is to check the coils and plugs and replace if necessary. If they are both bad, that could be hurting your mpg.

Always coast in gear not in neutral. Gas is used to keep the idle going in neutral.

Isn't gas also used in gear? And the rev is higher meaning more gas is flowing into the engine, right or is this completely wrong?

This is so f-ing funny.

For some reason, some people with RX-8 always want to get the same or higher than the retarded EPA rating. and I just don't see this happening on other sport cars group.

If u want wonderful mpg. go get another car.

The MPG thing gets a lot of attention. You google Rx8 you're going to find mention of it everywhere, so its more on people's minds than other cars. Someone said "OMG it gets horrible mileage" because they couldn't find anything negative to say and now that's the reputation we get to live with. Me, I'm tracking MPG to see how I can improve it through driving better, just like trying to improve track times, etc. So far I've found, by the way, that grannying it gets you worse MPG than being moderately aggressive.

I have read on here that the gas is shut off when coasting. I have a Scangauge and watched the MPG go from what ever(depending on how deep my foot is in it) too 999.99 when I lift my foot off the accelerator. Now it does not always shut off but will more readily when decelerating harder. Any one else's thoughts on this.

drop a corvette engine in there you go better gas mileage and more power or do what one of the members here did he put an sr20 in im sure thats up on 20 something mpg.
the gas on rotaries is pissing me off i believe its a 15.9 gallon tank technically if i got the 18mpg i should get 280 miles to a tank i get like 230 before im back at the station

and as for the mpg meter going sky high ive been in plenty of cars with those in them and in my friends v8 durango it was always around 12 in high once he let go of the gas it went sky high to 60 70 my friends old GTP did the same i remember once he was doing 100+ and it was reading 25mpg explain that one..... we both are still baffled on that one
