Is this the car for me?
Hi,
I'm going to have to ask you to keep an open mind while reading this post, I assume some people will give me slack about it. Here are the facts:
I'm a 26 year old who used to ride a small motorcycle when I was 16-18. I've been driving a Fiat Punto for 6 years. I don't know anything about cars. Even worse, I do not have the time to put into a car... sounds bad, right?
Why I want an RX8:
1. I work from home and I only drive about 300 miles a month.
2. I don't care too much about gas mileage because of that.
3. I love the aspect of the car, I think it is hands down the best looking car under 20k.
Why I'm afraid of getting one:
1. I don't know anything about how to fix cars in any way.
2. I freelance during the night and sleep during the day, so I have 0 time to take it to a mechanic.
3. I only have a budget of around 5000 euros or 6500 dollars for a car.
4. I'm scared that it won't start during the winter.
5. I don't know any experienced rotary mechanics in my area.
If I do a compression test before I buy it, any chance I can get one at this price and not have to worry about spending my time in an auto shop?
There are many cars under 5k on that German site - are they all broken?
I don't like my current car, but I only had to go to a mechanic about once a year until now, maybe even less.
I love the RX8, but I'm afraid it might not be for me.
Side note: I almost exclusively drive at night and don't go above the speed limit (lame, but true), but I don't mind revving the engine until I reach it! Haha...

I wouldn't worry about starting in the winter, a healthy car will be fine. But if you have no rotary mechanics around and no confidence in your own ability to keep an eye on things, this car might be too much risk.
It's not that the car needs a lot of maintenance - it doesn't - it's that if something ever goes wrong, you have no support. If you have no rotary mechanics around, how would you even get a compression test?

Honestly I'll be blunt.
For the sake of your sanity, your wallet and a car that needs attention...Don't buy one.
You'll be much happier driving a turbo eclipse or a mustang. Simply because this car NEEDS love it NEEDS to be cared for and if done correctly it will last you many years. (Given a healthy car to start)
Sadly with the lifestyle you live, this car could/will bring you headaches and a lot of lost $$.
Even after reading that you still want one. Read the new and potential owners thread linked in my SIG.

That's the problem. I've already read that and I still want it. I think I can follow the "rules" and I'm hoping I'll luck out and get one that runs perfectly for 1-2 years. I'm waiting for someone to talk me out of it and maybe I'll just stick with the Punto....

I wouldn't suggest you keep that...
Just saying mabye the 8 isn't for you.
If you want to venture in... by all means. But this isn't a car for everyone.
It takes a special kind of crazy
Just make sure you get a comp. Test

I'm not trying to be mean, but don't buy this car. It ain't for you.
This car is like a needy woman ... she wants more from you than you are capable of giving.
