LONE STAR 3000 Challenge
This event is designed to attract driving and adventure enthusiasts who wish to combine their road navigation skills with a worthwhile fund-raising effort.
The Lone Star 3000 Challenge has been created for people who love to drive and have the time and the means to enter an event that will challenge their wits, problem solving abilities, driving skills and sense of adventure.
CONCEPT
An over-the-road, non-stop rally on the roads of Texas that will cover a distance of roughly 3,000 kilometers (1860 miles) in forty-eight hours or less. Driver / co-driver teams consist of a minimum of two or more persons who are at least 18-years of age and legally licensed. All registered team members must stay in the entered vehicle at all times.
Teams will leave from near Ft. Worth, Texas, and proceed to find several checkpoints, the locations of which will either be identified by latitude and longitude coordinates, specific addresses, or by word clues.
In addition to finding and identifying the checkpoints, teams may be directed to proceed through special timed sections for which they will have to follow more- or less- puzzling route instructions and travel at exactly the right speed in order to pass checkpoints at exactly the right time. Seconds early or late will be counted against a perfect score of “0.”
Additional dynamic driving tests will be included on private paved areas and non-public roadways. These timed exercises will be designed to fairly challenge the drivers’ skill and ingenuity without regard to the type of motor vehicle being used.
The Lone Star 3000 Challenge requires adherence to posted speed limits at all times. Speeding on public roads is strictly forbidden and is not required.
The teams that successfully complete the entire route with the lowest number of penalty points and with a predetermined timeframe qualify for awards and prizes.
A concours d’elegance will be held following the event, along with a victory celebration for all competitors, sponsors and invited special guests.
RULES
Entry fee is $1,000 per vehicle, which includes two drivers. Additional drivers cost $150 each. There must be 100 vehicles entered for the event to take place. Each vehicle must have at least two licensed drivers of 18-years of age or older. All drivers must be in the vehicle for the entire event.
There may be additional members, but the basic team is the vehicle and its two registered drivers.
Competitors will be asked to be in Ft. Worth for a start on the morning of May 10. Teams will spend one night on the road before finishing the event by midmorning on Saturday, May 12. The awards banquet will be held that night at either the Texas Motor Speedway or the Doral Tesoro Resort.
Competitors are free to choose their own route and direction of travel to find the checkpoints located within Texas. Room rates will be negotiated for the overnight stays but the cost of the rooms is the responsibility of the competitors.
Checkpoints will be located at ATMs (a balance slip, with amount cut off, will be required as proof of visit) and motel rooms, where a checkpoint monitor will assist competitors as they perform their checkpoint routines. The checkpoint worker will also take a digital photo of the team standing by their vehicle before departing.
The event organizers will not dictate which routes are taken or in what order the checkpoints must be visited. That is entirely up to the competitors. The timed sections will be available as needed during the course of the event.
The Lone Star 3000 Challenge rally will have a length of approximately 3,000 kilometers, or 1860 miles. The organizers have calculated an average speed based upon online mapping program estimates between the start and finish as well as the interim checkpoints. Driving over the legal speed limit is not required to finish within the allotted timeframe for each day.
Competitors will be given their specific checkpoint locations upon departure. Most checkpoints are ATMs which must be accessed and a balance receipt (actual balance crossed out) attached to a route book for submission upon finishing. The location of the ATMs will be by GPS coordinates. Competitors may choose to travel clockwise or counter clockwise as they wish to find the checkpoints located along the perimeter of Texas.
Checkpoints will be located at ATMs, motel rooms and landmarks where a checkpoint monitor will assist them as they perform their checkpoint routines. The checkpoint worker will also take a digital photo of the team standing by their vehicle before departing to verify that proper team/car has been there.
The event organizers will not dictate which routes are taken or in what order the checkpoints must be visited. That is entirely up to the competitors.
The Lone Star 3000 endurance rally will have a length of approximately 3,000 miles. The organizers have calculated an average speed of based upon Mapquest estimates between the start/ finish and the checkpoints. Driving over the legal speed limit is not required to finish within the allotted timeframe. However, driving 24 hours per day is required.
VEHICLES
Competitors may drive any licensed and insured vehicle of their choosing. There are no restrictions. A basic safety inspection as well as certification that all insurance, registration and other documents are in order must be passed. Each vehicle will be required to carry a properly mounted fire extinguisher, first aid kit and road flares or warning triangle and flashlight. Further, each team must have a cell phone capable of taking and e-mailing digital photos; a digital camera; a Texas Department of Tourism Map and a means of finding locations using latitude and longitude coordinates.
