Rotary VS Honda Civic

Hey everyone! i am new here, please go easy on me! haha!
Heres my situation. I have the slowist car ever, a 97 VW Jetta, diesel. a guy wrenching 75HP and 110Lbs of torque! quite the preformance car eh? all my friends think that their civics and integras, and preludes can beat anything! i want to probe them wrong! i am thinking of a RX7 or RX8. what do you think? think the RX7/8 is up to it? most of my friends have the 100HP sticker and wing combo, with very little engine mods, the most popular is the fart cannon, some have a cold air intake. BTW, i don't street race, we have a track. Thanks a lot!

For performance purposes (at least at this stage with aftermarket products still in development) I'd go with the 7 over the 8. The 8 doesn't do well in straight line. You have to get an RX-8 above 4500 rpms before it'll really start to zoom. You can outrun a lot of things in a twin-turbo 7. Check out the Kills section at http://www.rx7club.com for proof.

If you are only going to buy a new car just to be faster, you are going to get flamed here pretty bad. So much for going easy on you. You started out with the wrong question for that. We own these cars because we appreciate them for what they are. We don't care who they are faster or slower than. It doesn't matter. You'd be better off buying a used Z-28 if you only care about outrunning Honda products.

If what you described are truely what your friends drive, even a stock sedan V6 could kill them. What do they race that makes them think they can beat everyone, local Geos and Scions?

You dont even need a rotary to prove them wrong.

I love my 8 as much as the next guy, but dont lie and say you dont feel bad when some out of the box econo car keeps up with you when you run.

And dont lie and say you dont run your car from time to time on the street either. A sports car should be a perfect symmetry of performence, handling and styling. Personally i think the 8 hits a homerun in 2 of those categorys and only bunts on the first. I cant wait for a mazdaspeed version to be released, the car desperetly needs 30-40HP. Of course this is all IMHO as always, ims ure everyone will jump on me for stating outloud what the majority think.

I disagree with reddragonmd, I think the car would be perfect with about 100 more hp.

Well, I have taken a rice'ed up civic in a stop light race on my Big Wheels. My foot even fell of the pedals, im getting to big for the damn thing. So, an Rx-8 should put your freinds in their place and an Rx07 will put them in their place then kick them in the *****.

No, you don't want too much power. I was watching on speedTV where they had some high powered cars, and they had a 900 hp vette that kept spinning the wheels until it hit around 90 mph. He had so much torque he had to be careful almost the entire time.

80-100 more and the rx-8 would be perfect.

About 40-50 horse and some torque would be good enough and is probably the most reasonable. I go fast enough as it is.

This has to be some kind of joke right? The 97 jetta TDI makes 90 HP and 155 lb ft of torque (@1900RPM). Obviously if it was designed to rev up to 6000 or 7000RPM it would be making 180 or 200HP. But its diesel, they still move really quick with good torque and who can argue with 40MPG around town and 50MPG on the highway?

u were driving diesel car?! o man... u are nuts.. 8 or 7 will just make u mad when u feeding them. "jes...how can it be......" and u will think maybe there's somewhere leak in the tank. also.. CiVic.?! it's not even in the same class as 8 or 7. and if u are not have many knowledge about rotary. don't buy rx-7. because rx-7 just so old that has so many problems to take care. if u can't notice the problems in time. ur car will just die soon.
.. man.. that's a so different prices. one is about 20k(si) one is about 26(8). 6k... is a big different to me. just look at ur wallet first before u decide choice what kinda car u want.
good luck.

Went to http://www.englishtranslator.com and got this:

You were driving a diesel car? Wow, that is nuts. If you buy an RX-8 or RX-7 you will be in for a big surprise when you are spending 3 times as much on gas. You will probably think your car is just spraying fuel out the back. The RX-8 and RX-7 are in a totally different performance class from the Honda Civic. If you are not knowledgeable about rotary engines the RX-7 might not be a good choice for you since they require qutie a bit of maintenance being how the newest ones in the USA are 10 years old at least now. If you don't know what you are doing you there is a good chance you can have an engine failure before too long. The RX-8 is quite a bit more expensive than a Honda Civic also. Good luck.

dude get an 8 either way whether u beat them or not which u should win especially on a track u still have a sweet all around car after u get it you should print off a bunch of stickers that say rice rockets and stuf flike that and at night put them all over their car like the day before you all wake up early and go to the track i did it once, and one of my friends with a tricked gti slightyly lowered with some groud effects and stuff that kinda riced it out i put about 25 of the stickers on his rear he didnt notice till ppl cracked jokes about him at the track.

Hrm. IMO you're looking at the wrong cars for your needs.

Let's see - main requirement is to beat you're ricer friends hondas etc.

Budget: 30k or so.

If that's the gist you should be looking at an EVO/STi.

Before anyone gets uppity - i own the 8 and love it. But if my main need for a car outside of basic transport was to beat a bunch of hondas - why not go EVO?

Dunno - the 8 is a sublime car that can hold it's own but the EVO will kill everything your buddies own (although from the sounds of it so would a Passat wagon so...)
