ouch, definitely not what Mazda needed right now.

Mazdas Slowed in Latest BoP Changes for Road America

The pair of Mazda Prototypes will head into next weekend’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase with added weight and less power, following IMSA’s latest round of Balance of Performance adjustments.

IMSA confirmed on Thursday that the Mazda has been given a 10kg increase in minimum weight, and a slight reduction in turbo boost pressures, across all RPMs, for the upcoming IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round.

While no other changes have been made to cars in the Prototype class, a handful of cars have been given BoP adjustments across other classes.

It includes the GT Le Mans class Ferrari 488 GTE, which receives a 10kg increase in minimum weight but an increase in turbo boost, which will likely offset the weight change.

The Ferrari has also been given a 1 liter increase in fuel capacity, while the Porsche 911 RSR gets 2 additional liters of fuel, but more importantly a 0.3mm increase in air restrictor, one race after its weight adjustment and tire compound change.

In GT Daytona, the BMW M6 GT3 will be 15kg heavier in Road America, while the Dodge Viper GT3-R will run with a 1.0mm larger air restrictor.

The Continental Tire Road Race Showcase is set for Aug. 5-7.

Well, maybe these changes will help #55 actually finish a race, it has been a while, after all.

race weekend means it's time for updates:

Mazda Quickest in Practice 3 at Road America

Mazda has topped the time charts again at Road America, with Jonathan Bomarito leading the way in final practice prior to qualifying for Sunday’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase.

Bomarito laid down a best lap of 1:55.021 in the 60-minute session to edge out the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP of Jordan Taylor by 0.414 seconds.

Friday’s pace-setter Ozz Negri made a late improvement to third in class, thanks to a 1:55.746 in his No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ligier JS P2 Honda...
Full Story.

Let's hope that translates into a good qualifying spot but more importantly to a shot at a podium finish tomorrow.
I think the shorter sprint races are better suited for this car (and motor) so I think if Mazda can have solid pit stops and stay out of any wrecks, they should have a shot tomorrow.

Looking ahead to the future of the Series, a few announcements were made today:

WeatherTech Championship Moves to Three-Class Format for 2018
2017 will mark the final season for the Prototype Challenge class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, as the series moves to a three-class formula for 2018.

The single-spec PC category has been a part of the series since its inception and made its debut in 2010, in the American Le Mans Series.

However, 2017 will be the last chance for the Oreca FLM09s to take to the track in IMSA competition.

For 2018 onwards, the series will have three classes: Prototype, GT Le Mans and GT Daytona.

While there will no longer be a Pro-Am prototype class in the series, Pro-Am entries in the Prototype class can compete for the Jim Trueman Award at each race and at the end of the season.

The winner of the award at the end of the season will receive an LMP2 automatic invite to the following year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The top season’s Pro-Am driver in GTD will also receive an invite to GTE-Am at Le Mans.

As suggested by some, LMP3 will not replace the PC category in its current form, but instead will go to the new IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda in 2017, replacing the IMSA Mazda Prototype Lites Presented by Cooper Tires series.
I for one don't mind the elimination of PC (Pro Am) as I never really understood the point of those cars and never really followed them.
they just always seemed like they were there because they were grandfathered in but not as though they were ever a focal point of the series.

I think a little consolidation into the Prototype class will be a good thing.

another disappointing performance for Mazda.
the 70 car was retired in what seemed like the first 15 minutes of the race but I never heard what was the cause.

the 55 was one of if not the fastest car on track yesterday but poor pit performances and bad race strategy caused them to be on a different fuel window than the rest of the class and ultimately cost them the race when they had to come in for an extra stop and surrendered the lead for good.

I can't imagine how frustrating this has been for mazda but it's getting harder and harder to watch every race knowing they're somehow going to shoot themselves in the foot.

Qualifying results are in!

Ricky Taylor has scored his first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship pole of the season, in qualifying for Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas.

Taylor reeled off a quick lap of 1:58.712 lap in his No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP to edge out the No. 55 Mazda Prototype of Tristan Nunez by just 0.003 seconds.

He denied Mazda’s third consecutive pole, with the pair of Multimatic-built prototypes set to start second and third on the grid, in the hands of Tristan Nunez and Joel Miller.
we're starting the race off in 2nd and 3rd so I'm hoping for the best!

Well, #55 failed to make it to the end of the race, once again:

One Mazda Prototype, Needs Fuel Pump

Hell, it tried its best to not even qualify for the race, to be perfectly honest:

Ultimate Low Car Problems Halt Circuit Of The Americas For Half An Hour

And later, the transport truck picked up some of #55's luck when this happened:

Anything That Hauls A Mazda Prototype Is Cursed

It's time for someone to call a priest.

Either exorcise the demons, or give #55 it's last rites.

another rough weekend for Mazda. Is it sad that I'm now just looking forward to next year's DPi class when we can get a fresh start.
