Question Might buy a 1989 Mazda 323 today...

For $675 cash OBO!!! I'm try low ball for $500 lol
What I found online about BP Engines.
In late 1989 Mazda introduced the BP 1.8-litre engine.

The then newly released BG series Famila hatch was available in turbo GT-X guise boasting the new BP turbo engine. The BP uses similar design to the B6 but larger bore and stroke dimensions (83 x 85mm respectively) increase the swept capacity to 1839cc. A DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder head, multi-point injection, knock sensor, 8.2:1 static compression ratio, air-to-air intercooler and electronically controlled boost pressure give the little 1.8 good torque and power. In Japanese guise, the BP turbo engine punches out 132kW at 6000 rpm along with 237Nm at an accessible 3000 rpm. Premium unleaded fuel is required to generate this sort of grunt – expect slightly less on normal unleaded fuel. This engine comes attached to a standard five-speed manual gearbox with AWD.
I dont know guys what do you think? I dont know jack about these cars, anyone on here know anything about them?
Thanks,
-Gil

Read in article in, iirc, road and track on it in which they praised the car (i believe this was thi highest output awd version) and deemed it the prdecessor to other street going rally cars. Which engine does this one have?...

edit: Go down to 1989

They are quick little cars! I know you're taking 89, but I had an 88 Mazda 626 Turbo and before I bought that, I remember test driving the 323GTX and the little thing just screamed!

If it's a GTX, grab it. The last thing i need is another car, but if i could find a nice 323GTX, i'd buy it in a heart beat.
To this day I regret not buying one new. I bought a Merkur XR4ti instead. They were almost giving them away. The Merkur, not the 323.

Exactly. The GTX is rare in the states and was praised quite a bit back when it came out. Makes a good starter rally car, too.

^Yeah they are all used up rally cars too. The sticker price was like $23K! wowza! I'm still thinking about this one. I might hold out and get a old school white RX-7.

Yeah, the XR4Ti was a German Ford Sierra imported into the US starting around 1984/85. I had one of the first ones. It had a 2.3 turbo good for around 175hp. Quite a bit for it's day. Nice enough car, I keep it for 134K miles. They had some trouble with the trannys. I went through two. The battery needed constant replacement, and some other items that I can't recall. I was looking at the Mazda and the Izuzu Impulse Turbo at the time, when they started marking down the Merkurs 'cause nobody was buying them. I got it out the door for $16500. A bargain in those days for something with that much power. Still regret not buying the 323GTX. Saw one at Cape Cod a coupe of years ago in mint condition, the owner would not even consider selling.

Oh the memories of when I shopped for my first car. It was between an xr4ti, an mr2 supercharged, or a mistubishi starion. I chose the starion, much for the same reason I chose the RX8, but like the RX8 I paid for it with unreliability. I just didn't sell it off after 2 years like I did the RX8. hehe

By far the best looking of the three, but very costly in the long term to maintain, as the car became very problematic early on. I should have gotten the MR2, just like I should have gotten the S2000 before ever buying the RX8. Still though, I became attached to the car and ended up owning it for a good part of my lifetime, eventually learning how to work on the car myself to save $$$. I loved the rarity, performance and beauty of that fine maching for it's time. The engine finally blew, and I sold it in 2006. I miss that car dearly.

These cars don't mean much now, but back then, my Starion turned heads just like the RX8 did when I first got it. Even towards the end in 2005, people would stop and stare, as the car was simply gorgeous. It's one of the best looking cars for it's time.

I used to have the 323 GT (turbocharged FWD version - BF). It was noticably quicker than the 4WD version.

With its Eibach springs, it was fun to drive. Apart from some rust, I had never any issues with it.

(After this I bought the 323 GT-R 4WD (BG), which was even more fun.)

My friend had a 323GTX. He said he wish he had taken better care of it. The stupidity of youth.
