Industry News - Turbos
Demand for turbochargers could spool up quickly as manufacturers strive to meet their customers' thirst for higher performance and still statisfy the governments push for higher fuel economy. Officials from the two leading turbo manufacturers, Garrett Engine Boosting Systems and Borg-Warner Turbo Systems, are gearing up for wider applications of turbochargers in Norh America. Some of the increase in volume will come when diesel engines begin penetrating light-duty trucks and cars in 2004. Chrysler will install a turbo diesel engine in the Jeep Liberty SUV next year. Mercedes Benz is adding a turbodiesel to the E class, and VW announced plans to introduce a turbodiesel Passat. Gasoline engines are not being left behind however. Electronic engine controls, upgraded impellers and bearings, no overheating due to better lubrication all have improved over the late 80's early 90's turbo craze. Both Garrett and Borg Warner are testing and readying for production:
Dual or two-stage turbos(sound familiar?)
Variable Vane that vary the amount of boost by regulating the amount of exhaust gasses that drive the impeller.
Electronicallly-driven turbos for gas engines that use a small electric motor to pre-spool the turbo, eliminating lag.

I have seen the borg warner dual turbo on the back cover of Turbo magazine looked interesting but I wonder if the technology is really much better than that of 10 years ago with all the problems the sequential setups had. Its hard to get around not having a lot of extra restriction due to a second turbo. Unless it works in a different way.
