UK New Guy - V8

Hey there,

new to the forum, so I'm hoping I'm posting in the right section, and new to Mazda's in general and have logged in via facebook,

I have picked up myself a '06 ?grey? 231 RX8,

however, its on its second engine ( the previous owner fitted an un-known second hand unit ) and it has given up the ghost and wanted rid, so I bought it for cheapness,

I also happen to have a Toyota 1UZFE 4.0, 32 valve, quad cam, all alloy V8 sat in the workshop that will shortly be working its way into the engine bay!

I'll be hooking it up to a toyota W58 speed box,

No pictures as of yet, as the car is still complete, and the only " real " progress is making a wiring loom for the 1U,

Advanced appologies for the rotary purists on the board, I do find them interesting, but....we all love something different!

No offense but out of all of the V-8 swap threads that have been started only two ever ran and still were never completed. The guy above seems to be the first to complete one, we shall see. So that is why these types of threads are crapped on. Instead of starting a thread saying what you are going to do, start one showing what you did like the guy above.

you'll always get people that are too quick to **** on your parade,

but thats only someone elses opinion,

I'm the one that'll be putting the time, machining, effort, money in to it, not someone else on an internet forum,

The Pakistanis are constantly swapping some **** to avoid messing with a rotary. A lot of them appear to be Toyota swaps as well.

Good luck to you. It would be nice if people started threads like these with something to show every now and then. That usually helps to prevent all of the pooping.

Holy crap, that's a big engine. I'm surprised it even goes in the bay.

Where are you going to put all the ancilliary stuff? I see you already had to move the ABS unit out of the way. Doesn't look like there's any room for airbox, coolant reservoir, battery, washer bottle, etc.

Also, what about the steering rack and anti-roll bar? Looks like the front of the engine is sitting right where they would be. Will you have to relocate them?

if you are crafty you can sneak a small custom metal coolant tank bottle on the side, along with another custom bottle for the washer.. battery is not a huge deal to relocate to the trunk..

the intake will be sucking hot air all day i think.

the strut bar is borderline useless, if you really wanted one, im sure one can be made to fit.

Steering rack, as the electric unit is a bit clunky stupid thing, has been binned off and will be replaced with an RX7 unit,

the arb for the time being has been removed, but will make a re-appearance at some point, albeit in a slightly different location,

ABS will be fully removed, its only been shifted up there as a temporary measure,

as above, the battery will be going in the boot,

washer bottle, probably stick a smaller one down in the front bumper somewhere or in the stock location with a smaller/more compact unit,

airbox....probably end up with some samcos, piping and an apexi filter or similar, this 1u runs an AFM so that will be factored in,

as for your hot air issue, the current piping is as is it was in the soarer, and that seemed just fine.....the manifold heat sheilds etc are all still in place, honestly the least of my worries right now,

bit of a bad angle of photo, there is infact quite alot of room infront of the engine to the slam panel, and the front bumper is more or less hollow.....

yeah, running a W58 5 speed toyota box, found in N/A supra's amongst other vehicles

toyota never made a manual 1U so had to put together a manual conversion for that

how much did that engine cost and what ecu and engine mounts are you using?

a mate was breaking a soarer, so got the motor for about 250, running a stock ecu ( 3 x 40 pin config ) and mounts, i'll be making my own and fabbing them onto the rx8's crossmember,

1uzfe 's can be had for fairly cheap as they are common and because of no direct manual conversion so are regarded as " un wanted "/not an easy or cheap conversion, W58's fetch decent money, a bellhousing and flywheel will set you back a chunk of money,

engine conversions arent foreign to me, i love the challenge! take every job as it comes, work around it and produce quality solutions

good good..what about the odometer and all the electrical stuff? dont you have to remove it and get a custom made gauges etc..?

short term i'll probably stick something like this in:-

Race Technology Dash 2 Race And Road Dashboard - Demon Tweeks

long term, depending on how i get on and if i can be arsed, i might look into making a conversion utilising the mazda's ecu and feed it with signals from the 1u engine,

we shall see....

Hey guys im new here

I just bought ross' project, and between us the car will be driving soon!

So a little update to let you all know where its at!
The motor is in and runs! the gearbox and bell housing all mate up nicely to the block, a custom prop shaft has been made and fits nicely, the rad is in but still needs plumbing in. A fancy clutch release bearing has been ordered an should be here this week, a Diff mount has been fabbed up and is currently being powder coated,

so jobs left to do

finish fabing up the rx7 steering rack mounts then get the whole jalopi blasted and powdercoated (halfway through at the min)

Fit the clutch slave, clutch and fly

plumb in new brake lines

fit a throttle pedal and cable

make an alternator belt tensioner

plumb the rad to the engine

Make an exhaust

Then do lots and lots and lots of MAD skids

IT LIVES! AND IS ON THE ROAD! ther is a few little niggles to iron out but it starts and drives, and drives well!

Power steering
A/C & Heating
Abs
Ect

Only non-functional parts are:
Cruise control
Check engine light
Traction control and light
And battery light.
