Why I vanished so quickly.... if anyone wondered
Quite simply, I grew up, fiscally. For a detailed description of what that entails, see my post here:

I haven't the moral strength to type it all again as it gives me a rather sizeable pain in my head ( as well as elsewhere) to think about it, let alone talk about it. I am, though, still alive and may pop in periodically and, if at some time in the future you see a silver Mercedes E350 heading your way, please don't flip it the bird as it might be me wanting to say hello.

Well, that was a bad experience, and a cautionary tale indeed.
However, your statement about growing up fiscally can be interpreted as the rest of us are being fiscally immature. (?)
I assume you meant you learned a lesson about jumping into a major purchase without doing your homework first.
You also made a major mistake by purchasing a semi useless warranty.
I have cautioned new members to READ the extended warranties if offered, which usually cover things
like head gaskets, timing belts, rings, etc. that don't exist on rotaries.
Sorry to hear about your problems, but many of us have had great experiences with our 8s.
You just don't see too many members posting to say how great everything is.
People post more when they're having problems.
4 years & 40k miles since I bought my '04, and it's been a very enjoyable car, my favorite ever.
Enjoy your Mercedes and blending in with the herd.

You hit the nail on the head. That was precisely why I went into such gory detail and concluded by recommending that new owners research carefully before buying and avoid third-party warranties. Most are comparatively useless as they don't cover even half as much or half as well as you might be led to believe by the sales pitch.
Don't get me wrong, though. I did enjoy the 8 immensely, while it was running well. It was just the continual spending that started to wear me down. I don't mean regular upkeep items like top-quality oil and filter changes or ignition parts as I was willing and able to deal with those at the drop of a hat. The wearing part really hit home with the $6000. laid out over a 5 to 6 month period. Hell, I nearly paid for the car a second time during that period and that, to me, seemed a bit excessive.
There are times, though, when I see an 8 go by and I sort of miss the old girl. However, I am quick to give my head a shake and once again question my sanity for missing the constant cash outlay. Then I fire up my computer and check my bank balance and investment statements and, thinking back at the beating they took and could have taken later on, smile a little smile and consign the memories of the good times with the 8 to long-term storage.

Thanks for the sentiment and yes, I fully intend to enjoy the driving experience. In fact, I have, in the past week or so, been considering buying a second Mercedes as a summer toy. Just trying to decide which of two I looked at to go for. A tough choice since both have the main ingredient of the perfect car for my toy....6.3 AMG. Guess I haven't really grown up, after all.
