Gas Mileage

The mazda brochure says for gas mileage: 12.8L / 100kms city driving (6MT). Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha..... sob... sob.... (all out crying now). More like 15.8L / 100kms (91 Esso) on Calgary Roads + 1L of 5w20 every 1500kms or so (so far). I've just hit 2000 kms on my odometer. Can't even get the damn car above 150 kph because of all the friggin traffic!!!!! I'm parking my car and buying a bus pass....

this is the first gas mileage thread I have seen on this site since it's inception ~3 years ago. Seriously. It is.

My second car is a new Nissan Maxima. I've never done a systematic, scientific, study of gas mileage, but it costs me about the same amount of money over the course of a week that I would have to assume gas mileage is about the same for both cars.

So the rx8 is not so bad considering I drive it quite hard. Last weekend, I drove to Tremblant and back on just over half a tank of gas.

Ghost i know how u feel man, i get on average 350-380km per tank which is about aver for city and highway. i only have 3,700km on my Sophia(RX-8). i spoke to some other owners and some say they get around 400-450km / tank but hey i know it was not the most fuel efficient car when i got it. just live wit it and enjoy it. the most i ever got was 497km on 47L of gas, that was going 102km/h for 5 hours straight form montreal to toronto. some ppl say they get th same gas mileage doing 130km/h. on the way to montreal i was doing 125km/h and only got 360km on 50L

How do you do 102km/h for 5h straight??? I will need antipsychotics at that point. i use cruise and set it at 120 then 130 then ........ I love this car too much to torture it at 100km/h!:D

I wanted to take a gun and shoot myself after 4 hours but i just wanted to see what the car is capable of inters of economy. not that impressed. but better then what i managed on the way there, and the cruz was on both ways

You did good gerhardj, I seriously cannot drive this car and get more than
400km for 60L...Average speed being 127 to 140 km/h (between 4000 and 5000 rpm)...But I really don't care, like this car at 160 to 200 km/h :D

1.3L moped

I remember back in '83 I had a 1.3L moped and got 250 kms on a 5L tank... I was hoping the RX-8 would be similar... ohhh.. the horror... the horror...

Gas Mileage

Hey, this is a great thread! Thanks Hellbreed, I will try gas from another station; I've read Petro-Canada gas has been good to the RX-8 so I'll test that next. I think there's great value about discussing topics such as gasoline, oil and other alterations that could affect the performance and longevity of your vehicle.

For those of you who don't want to read another gas mileage thread, DON'T READ IT! See the title above?! That's a hint. If I wanted to read about TIRES FOR MY CAR and the title said **** ****, I probably wouldn't click on that thread... plus I could kick your a$$ in a race... bike racks.. 4:30 after class.. :p

Damn straight! I like these threads cuz they have potential for new information. And if you tack new information onto old threads, it becomes too large for us to read through it! The search is good, but overwhelming information can discourage the user as well as the lack of good, useable keywords. Plus we'll run out of topics to discuss about! :P

There are so many threads on this topic...even in the Canadian section. (they aren't that large) Discuss the topic all you like but don;t make the thread list "too large" because it takes me too long to find things.

Hey man, all I'm sayin is that a thread like this doesn't need to be 'stopped' and never discussed again. If there's new and useful information, it should be in a new thread. If it is old and searchable information, it should not be posted, at the discretion of the user. The bottom line is that unless you are concerned about disk space, then do as Ghostrider suggests, do not read the thread. There are multiple ways of improving the way users post information and to search for information. Having one continuous thread with 20+ pages is just as bad as having twenty 1 paged fragmented threads. The best method to post is to have a limited page thread, indicated by a date range on similarly discussed topics. If there are other ideas on how information should be shared on forums, I'd be happy to hear. As a software developer, I'm quite interested in HCI principles as I have to deal with that crap everyday!

I totally disagree. I think it is much better to have one thread with all the in formation in one place over starting new smaller threads. This would be especially helpful for a Noob. Some people who have given very good contributions to the subject are not likely to keep on contributing the same information in fragmented threads. There has been an excellent group of posts around what goes into the quality of gasoline in one of theses threads. It would now be a royal pain in the *** to go find that because of all the fragmented threads and you're not likely to have these people posting this info again in another gas mileage thread.


It’s then same with DIY threads. It’s much easier when they are in the same sub folder and then in one particular thread pertaining to the subject.

Discuss the topic all you like, just don't litter the site with repetitive threads.

As with everything, there are pros and cons of each. You are correct that a large thread will keep information centralized, but actually discourages users from reading it. After a thread exceeds 7-10 pages in length, it typically becomes the conversations of only a few people who have been following it. Take the RX-8 vs RX-7 thread on rx7club.com or the Canada vs. USA thread in the lounge section. Other cons to consider is the thread has a higher potential of becoming off-topic like this one, whereas a new thread is likely to stay on the subject. Repetitive information, mostly consisting of facts, should be stored in centralized FAQs. DIY are mostly based on facts and useable data and not opinions, so a long thread is ok. Gas mileage threads are based on obsservations and opinions and although I agree that too many fragmented threads is a pain, it's best to keep a middle-ranged set of threads for consistency and ease of use. Anyway, I'm gonna stop here cuz I spend way too much time on this forum!
