Are these track tires? Why is this newsworthy vs what is available now?

Yes, they're track tires. Super sticky compound that can make a hero out of the sloppiest driver.

I didn't specify a size because I don't want you to be accused of vendoring. Let's pretend we're going to put them on a stock rx8. My experience is pretty much limited to RA1s. I'll have to put some research into how these compare.

The size you would probably use is a 245/40ZR18. We have had them on Kafka's car at Shannonville and Mosport and the car was faster than modded 8's on Toyo's and old Hoosiers. These are available now. The label on the tire says "Limited Street Use" but we put "Not recommended for street use" on our invoices. pm me for "more info" lol

Yup, I can attest to that since I was there in my stock car. With R1 tires & Al's driving,
We overtook a fully mooded Mazdaspeed Rx8 (with a cage too) on Bridgestone R-Compound tire driven by a seasoned race car driver in 3laps. That particular Rx8 was in the Newfoundland Targa 2007 race too.

You can see the report here:
Mosport track day, 1 Sept 2008

And I also overtook ThEIf's super fast lightning gheyllow one at Shannonville. But that's just because I am awesome lol. Theif's car got BFGoodrich KDW too and its pretty damn good for street use. Its just that the R1 is THE track tire in this case. If you plan to go to track a few times each summer, a set of BFGoodrich R1 will give you all the grip you'll ever need for two years under "reasonable" usage
