View Full Version : mazdaspeed rx8
fritts 10-12-2002, 11:18 AM This may be a repost but this is off the rx7 forum
http://www.overboost.com/story.asp?id=556.
Also the latest superstreet talks about a mazdaspeed version rx8 to be released soon after the regular rx8 is released. Also that mazdaspeed has had several protype rx8's that they have been working on.
Could be fun to have 300 hp. My question is how are they getting 300hp are they keeping it na or are they putting on a turbo like the protege.
Sputnik 10-12-2002, 11:30 AM Somewhere on this forum (in one of the threads concerning the recent Sevenstock event, I believe), a Mazda Exec reportedly mentioned that the Mazdaspeed version of the RX8 will be a turbo pushing 300 hp.
I would normally expect that an intercooled turbo would produce more of a gain than 30 hp out of a 140 hp engine in the Protege (correct my numbers, if I'm wrong). So getting a mere 50 hp out of a 250 hp engine matches that "scale". So, it sounds like the Exec's numbers are real-world.

boowana 10-12-2002, 01:29 PM Not so... Robert Davis, a VP at Mazda stated that there will be a Mazdaspeed version of the RX-8 with 300 HP but did not say that it was turbocharged. He also didn't give any indication of when it would be available.
I recorded the whole event and repayed the tape to clarify what was actually said.
Hope this helps to clear any confusion.:p
Sputnik 10-12-2002, 03:36 PM Fair enough. Then I either misread, or someone misquoted.

I would SO buy a Mazdaspeed RX-8!
Well, if they can get 280 out of the pre-production rensis, maybe they can get 300hp by NA. :D

6 seconds to 60, 14.5 to 1/4 mile is plenty fast for me.
I want the car to HANDLE well.. additional power is not a necessity, just enough to have some fun with and with 250 under the hood that's plenty for fun. I can do all the donuts I want :P
Anyhoo, the MPS RX-8 will only be good for me when they produce it without turbos and instead with a 3 rotor engine. I have no interest in turbos... I like NA always and forever :)
I agree. 250hp is already more than I can handle at my skill level, and something I'll rarely push to the max on the streets--if at all.
Still, if I could get 300hp at no extra cost, and in NA, I'll take it!

Who can argue with that :)

The MPS protege is turboed but the internals are not changed very much, and the turbos dont boost too much. Mazda did that to save cost and to prevent a direct competition with the Subaru WRX. With the a few internal upgrades most tuners believe the engine can be modded to push 230 hp easy. Basically its the same turbo setup that is in the japanese silvia so theres alot of potential.

And I am aware of what can be done with some tuning, check out FM's progress (http://www.flyinmiata.com/protege/) on their kit. And they're just using stock internals, a simple fuel pressure riser at this time.

fritts 10-15-2002, 12:23 PM A major issue I'm faced with is do I put in for an RX-8 or do I wait for the MazdaSpeed version. I wonder whether or not mazdaspeed will offer all of the parts that will be on the mazdaspeed rx-8. If so I'm not waiting, I would rather customize the car myself anyways, decided which parts I want aftermarket and which I want mazdaspeed. I see the mazdaspeed already has a larger list of parts for the protege. So I guess the question is will mazdaspeed offer all the parts that are available on their mazdaspeed RX-8?????
Sputnik 10-15-2002, 04:07 PM I'm hoping that by the time we are actually able to actually buy a regular RX8, we will have more information on the Mazdaspeed version.
