Subaru question

I have a co worker with a 04/05 STI. She was talking about it and how slow her GTO is in comparison to it and I asked her how the GTO could be "slow" with the vette engine in it and she tells me her STI has been dyno'd at 721 RWHP !!! Now I know very little about the STI other than it has been well received (looks aside) and has a about 300 HP. Here is a list of the things she claims it has:

1. 721 rwhp with 0-60 times in the low 3's
2. All wheel steering that can be adjusted (back steering on or off)
3. Have a value of $75-80K
4. The factory warantee is still good on original parts. She claims she has letters from the dealer stating what is still covered after receiving info from the tuner shop.

I want to cry BS but I don't know what these cars are capable of. Any of this possible? The shop that did all of the work is a place called "Dynocomp" in the Phoenix area. When they ordered the car from Subie it went straight to the tuner shop for 3 months of work.

So what do you think, do I cry BS?

Cry BS loudly. Especially on the warranty stuff. She has none. Period.

Also the most powerful STi I know of had 700awhp. It was a monster. Just to get to that much power took $20K. I knew the owner personally.

No one has made a block, pistons, rods and crank that can take it. I call BS.

That should tell you enough right there. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of Subaru making a rear steering system, much less equipping any of their cars with it. I know Nissan and Honda do make one and have used them on production cars... but that's about it.

The only way I'd believe anything about keeping the factory warranty was if the mods were done back a marker supported/affiliated tuners.... like Ford and Saleen... or in this case Prodrive.

I call B.S.

I'm guessing she's telling you some version of the truth...

1.) Possible but I bet she's exagerating, it's most likely a GT35R STI, which will make a GTO feel slow but isn't going to put down 700+whp. (pssst it's awhp or simply whp) On pump Cali gas it's going to put down about 450whp. Do you guys have 93 octane in AZ.?

2.) I bet she's talking about DCCD and you misunderstood or she doesn't understand how the DCCD works.

3.) In their fantasy world maybe, modified cars are only worth what you can get for them, not what you've put into them.

4.) If something happens that isn't a direct result of the mods I see no reason why they wouldn't cover it.

Well I should have put something about how I don't know of a 700+whp STi that will live long or is more than a dyno queen.

Thanks, I thought she was full of BS but wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Ike, I was hoping you would respond. What is DCCD? I argued with her about the steering because I'd never heard of such a thing, so i made sure she was clear. I figured she was talking about some type of awd power distribution but she kept insisting it was steering like they had in rally racing. It was not a factory option but something this tuner put on. Have you ever heard of this dyno shop? The other tuner shop she mentioned was Kingpin.

The other thing she said that was confusing was she said the dyno pulls could tell her the 0-60 times. I've never been to a dyno shop, but how could any estimate be accurate?

DCCD is an adjustable diff that allows you to adjust how much power goes to the back wheels, it will change how the car steers and takes turns but is not AWS by any means.

Now that you mention Kingpin I doubt she's BS'ing you. I bet she has the Gt40R Kingpin turbo kit and was tuned at Dynocomp, which is a very reputable shop. As for the 0-60 times, you can take a guess from how much whp and the weight of the car. Consider this, if the car has what I think it does it'll trap a little over 100mph in the 1/8th mile and run it in under 7 seconds with a good driver. So 0-60 in 3 seconds or even faster is very possible. I still think she's being generous with the 721whp number though...

Naturaly she's comparing a highly modded STI to a stock GTO, so i believe her figures are exxagerated. Now, I talked to a guy with a GTO who has about 50 grand invested in pure performance including an s/c kit I don't know what he has, but I'd be willing to bet he'd smoke the living crap out of that gal and her STI. I can't prove that, but this guy is a pure every weekend racer with unlimited funds, and keeps making his car faster and faster with each passing month. He's waiting until his project is complete, so he doesn't know what this car can do yet,

It's a bit unfair to call the GTO slow compared to an STI when one car has been overhauled with thousands of dollars invested and the other hasn't. The reality is, mods for mods, the STI is essentially toast, because in a straight line, an STI cannot touch a GTO mods vs mods. I don't like comparisons like this, and her statement has no relevelance. Have her invest the same amount of money in her GTO to make it fair, and then lets see what she has to say about the STi vs her GTO. I also know a guy with a 620whp GTO, and you will not find many STI's that can hold up with that car. On highway, it's an utter embarassment. Scary thing is, he's no where near reaching the potential of that car, and he's already at 620whp. If she wants pure straight line power including rolling and highway power, she needs to put the money into that GTO, not the STI.

The funny thing is she bought the GTO so she would have something as fast as the STI (the STI is her husband's). When she brought it home the first thing she was going to do was a bunch of mods. The even funner thing that I can't seem to come to grips with, she works as a tech making maybe $20K a year

I'm not sure I am ready to say a moded GTO will embarass a moded STI. I have no doubts both are insanely fast and the potential for the GTO is high, but to say embarass is a little stong. I image Ike is going to have fun with that statement.

I've asked her where she is able to use any of that power and just says "around"

Haha, I was just thinking that. To embarrass a car doing 0-60 in around 3 seconds, you have to what? do it in the mid 2 second range? I dunno, but unless it's one of those non street legal cars I highly doubt ANY car can "embarrass" that STi (assuming she's not lying about it).

Heck a Saleen S7 doesn't embarrass it (it does beat it though). Though now that I think about it, he may be saying that she can't take advantage of the power while the GTO guy, who is a racer, can.

In that case, yeah that's probably true. Even if your car CAN do 0-60 in the low 3s, it doesn't mean YOU can do it.

Well, I'm not talking 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile here, I was talking highway. Sure, I could be exxagerating a bit, but my money would always be on a GTO if rolling on the highway, assuming you highly modded both to the hilt. I do know my stage 1 STI didn't stand a chance against a bone stock GTO at a 70mph roll, and it would have been really ugly the time an ls2 vette pulled aside of me on highway when on my way to work and taunted me. I waved, and said NO THANKS. That would have been embarassing. Not a smart move to play to another car's strengths, and not your own. The best solution. Start from a dig, hit 100mph, then shut down.

Another WRX owner here, calling BS.

Indeed she's probably talking about DCCD and is just too stupid to understand how it works. Furthermore, some of the fastest STI's in the world are only pushing 650-700ish awhp. As much as I love our cars, our motors really don't have the potential to make that kind of power without being built to hell. Indeed, she's probably talking about an STI with a FPG/FPR or GT35R turbo. Which by all rights, is ****** fast*, but not to the tune of 700+awhp. That kind of car would not even be remotely drivable on the street.

Just ask her what turbo the STI has and to pop the hood. That should tell you a lot.

Since she mentioned Kingpin it's quite possible she has the GT40R kit they offer, either that or she knows just enough to lie really well.

Also, only a WRX owner would say a 700whp car isn't driveable on the street.

Does your *** hurt from talking out of it so much?

In the 1/4 they're going to be pretty damn close and on a less than ideal street I'll give it to the STI every time. On the highway, the GTO will pull on the STI about the same way an S2K would pull on an RX-8. Is that getting embarassed to you?

if its just a fun "race" then theres no reason to get butthurt but if you in your car pulls up to someone you are gonna blow away and talk **** to them and then they beat you even if by a few inches you will still be thinking WTF and feel a little embrassed especially if people were around to view your **** talking and losing.

What are you talking about? This thread is about a highly modded STI, not what happens in magical streetrace trash talking fantasyland.

and that is where i said a GTO could embarass a moded STI because with the teenagers that usually own STI's comes a big mouth and with a GTO its very hard to tell if they are modded or not before you hear it.

with that said i was saying it would be an embarrassment to say they are at a party and the STI guy is talking mad **** about the GTO saying he will smoke it and talking all kinds of trash.

so then they go lets say to a track to keep off of street racing and race the GTO beats the STI by no matter how much the STI guy will 99% of the time be embarrassed because of all his **** talking.

my original statement was to this guy no the cars do not embarrass themselves their owners do it which is where this comes in and then you proceed to argue with me about it not being an embarrassment when if you read what i originally said
