With the CAD being at it's all time high, might make sense to get the tires in US. Anyone know what you have to pay at the border?
My impression is that there is a huge price difference between Canadian and US prices, no?

I got mine...about 30% less even after exchange
Availability is better too....usually 1-2 days for most stuff.
Border should be no problem. The border guy that I saw just let them go

I know it's a long way, but I'm thinking of getting alloy wheels and winter tires. This would mean that I would have to have a bigger vehicle and they would be in the trunk. Most likely, I would have to declare them.
Dannobre, I assume that you just replaced your tires or did you have them in the trunk of your vehicle?
At some point we could make a trip to visit family in Ohio and see if I could get something at a good price or just go shopping to Buffalo and get the wheels there.
Tirerack also ships to Canada. The cost is 140USD. Plus, broker fees of 65, PST/GST, and duties of 7% if the items are not made in US, correct?
Any ideas, advice? Is it worth it?

Duty costs sound about right. The price difference depends on the product - big tires and wheels will net you more savings, since the US market is so much larger.
Why would you want new alloys in an Ontario winter? The salt and slush will eat them in a few seasons.
One tip: it's not worth getting nabbed by Customs - every time you cross the border after you get nailed once, you'll get pulled over again and again and again despite declaring everything. Canada Customs does not like getting ripped off!

I never got ripped off by Canada custom, always Gift as description value at $0. Yeah! But that is for my hockey cards only (I bought a lot over 300 bucks). Haven't tried with rims yet!
I heard Fedex Express cover all those fees. But is like 100 bucks shipping or so.
Correct me if I m wrong!
Tax Free country!!
14% Tax now, Yeah!! should be 10% to boost up the economic!!

"Falcon" is about right - if you can buy a complete mounted and balanced set in the US for around $250 less than here, go for it. If the difference is less, you may want to shop locally.
Quite another scenario if you are buying just tires - the difference would have to be about 100%....if you can buy the same tire here for double, you won't save in the US. The mounting/balancing when you get them here will erase all your savings.
