I've read several references to a CD in different threads. Did some/all of you get a user's/owner's/whatever manual on CD with your car? Or is this just an educational/promotional thing for the dealerships?

Can the contents be downloaded from somewhere?

I have wanted to know about this too. Several people on this site have received all kinds of literature, media, mugs, books, etc. but it does not seem to be distributed equally. I asked my dealer and they said they had seen zilch. Naturally I want it too!

UPDATE

Downloaded it today! Took 11 hours via highspeed.

sorry I do not know how to post a link here but copy paste it and it will work

Zoom44 below has a link to the original thread where several people were trying to get the file and many did. The links to FTP did not work for me but the edonkey one from downshift (member here) did. You have to download the donkey peer to peer program, log onto a server and then put the info pasted above to find the file. Press start and WAIT! It is definitely intended for dealers but not harmful for owners to have.

Here is the technical highlights CD (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4969&highlight=technical+highlights) thread. If it is still hosted, there is a link somewhre in this thread to download it.

The RX-8 Technical Highlights CD is a training tool for Mazda technicians to give them an overview of certain features. It contains about 35 minutes of video on the car. At most dealers, the CD is in the possesion of the service manager.

My dealer let me borrow the CD for a day, too. After viewing it and doing some other things I discovered it accidentally got cloned.:D ;)

wow! that took some searching, so it took me awhile but here is the link (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4969&highlight=on+loan) to the original thread. there is a part number given if you want to buy one. i won't promise that the download links still work.

edit: damn! trekn beat me to it;)

Yes, that CD is VERY informative, but it's only available as part of that very expensive "training package".
It REALLY should be made available to everyone !!
There is nothing "secret" in it -- just great info about how a lot of things work.

After I watched it, I tried to get "permission" (it's copyrighted) from SOMEONE at Mazda to either load it on my site, or sell copies of it -- could never get anywhere.

The "word" we received a few days ago was that "someone" was still "looking" into it -- so maybe there IS hope?

And yes, the TAPE itself HAS a part number on it, but we were not able to purchase any of them !!!!

Some of us have asked for the cd image and been directed to a thread taht contains download links BUT they seem to be all dead oldies and not goodies. Could someone help us out?

The dealer does not know what CD I am talking about. It seems that the only way to get it is through this website.

Try in a few hours when they've disconnected, beacuse I have it limited to two concurrent connections so it doesn't take all day to download.

I couldn't run the ISO so I had to use that ISO buster software.

If there's enough demand I can zip it again and make it available on the emule network, PM me if you're interested.

I got it! I started downloading last night about 11:30pm and just finished watching it - took about 11 hours to get via high speed access. I pulled it down from the one link given in the thread e-donkey. I used nero and voila!

What a great video.

here is the link that was usable as of today:

compliments of downshift on this site.

YOu have to have that edonkey peer to peer program loaded and then log into a server.

Sorry ELAK. During the download on that edonkey I saw you as a link. I put you on the que to speed up the process. I had 38 people pulling my bandwidth down and well, wanted to get the file. I went back to you but you were disconnected. I sent a message but you did not respond. I went from 16kps to 38kps when I put everyone on the que. Now, we need to get you the file somehow. It is great!

It's not the source that is slow, it's the destination. I'm working my 56k modem overtime;)

Started out with a bit over 30 hours, right now I've got 15-18 hours to go. After getting the 8 I can't afford that $50 a month for DSL/cable. Gotta have gas!

35 hours later (after several disconnections by my ISP) I finally got the whole CD.

Sh*t! I had no idea they had fitted that much wizardry into the car. Sure hope long term quality is high with so many systems interacting.

After watching this CD I'm no longer convinced that the dynoing is as straight forward as disabling TCS and DSC.

A highly recommended download (albeit hopefully faster than mine).

How come when I run the CD, I don't see the video, only hear audio. But I can click on the video files individually on the CD through Windows Explorer and watch them. They just don't play when I'm running the actual program. Any ideas? I have Win XP Pro and have every patch/update installed.

I was wondering about the same thing. Seems something is not right on this CD.

Just running the RX8.exe application worked fine for me (w2k, 800MHz Athlon Trbird). Maybe it's an XP problem. Try on an older setup.

RodsterinFL, I need your help - where exactly do I paste this link to ed2k://|file|techhighlights.zip|540821793|A5A6BA7FD30040F 9AE226D59EB1398DB|/.

I went to download eDonkey but there were several files - the web site indicated that if I didn't know which files I needed, that I should download overnet. That's what I did. I started the file, it installed, then froze up when I clicked to register. Anyway, I rebooted the PC, succeeded in launching overnet, and then...what? I pasted your link into the search string and got nothing.

To make the link work, copy it to your clipboard (normal copy command), and then click the transfer tab. Then right click on the page under the tranfer tab and select link from clipboard. On a related note I've been trying for 2-3 days (dsl) and can't download it!! Every now and then I'll connect with a user or two (gamera or fong sui yuc) but no tranfer happens.

Thanks for the hint, I got a bit farther and now (1:00 AM) it is connected and seems to be looking for the file. I'll check on it in about 7 hours.

I installed emule & downloaded the .iso file last night. Download finished about 12:30am est.

Emule is a bit different looking. Dunno if there's a functionality difference or not, but emule got it for me last night. Took a bit less than 5 hours, @ ~31.5kB/s.

Now I need that iso buster software cuz my roxio won't do anything with it. Some message about it's not an image file or some crap like that...

edit...Yeah, go back to that previously discussed original thread, I think page 4 has the meat of it, concerning .iso file problems. Nero demo software should work & there's a few other useable alternatives - "ISObuster" & I forget the others already:p . Do it!

Edonkey requires the owner of the file to have the whole file. So you can only download from people who have the whole cd file.

EMule only requires the owner of the file to have a part of it. Emule will then connect to lots of people who have downloaded different bits of the file. This allows emule to connect to far more people and download it quicker.

I downloaded it with emule. Left it overnight, done by morning.....

Ah, I see that is actually a button, thought it was just a graphic. The version is v.0.49.4 and I'm trying to download via a link that others have used successfully before:

ed2k://|file|techhighlights.zip|540821793|A5A6BA7FD30040F 9AE226D59EB1398DB|/

Does this mean that the link is not working for downloads anymore, or there are too many people downloading from there already?

No it just means that overnet hasn't found any sources. Leave it running, it may find some.

http://www.emule-project.net/

That's where you download it. Click on the red "available " in the site.

July 13th 2003: eMule v0.29c is available!

Download:
Installer v0.29c
Link

Pick a mirror location...

Instead of saving it, open it. It will go into the installation when finished downloading. Install it.

When installation is finished, open (run) it. Copy/paste the link

ed2k://|file|techhighlights.zip|540821793|A5A6BA7FD30040F 9AE226D59EB1398DB|/

It should start downloading. That's all I can remember. There's some stuff throughout all this that I guess you gotta do that's pretty intuitive. I hope none of that kinda stuff hangs you up much...
I did this stuff last night at home. I'm at work now, so I'm kinda going by memory here...

That's the ticket!:) Sorry to see your slow speed though. I have Fastaccess DSL & although my connection was Low (whatever), my speed was hovering around 30kB/s the whole 5 hour download time. Hey though, at least you're doing it!

I'm gonna download that Nero demo software to crack the unzipped techhighlights.iso file so I can burn it onto CD. I'll let you know if it works as well as this part did...:D

Canada
08-13-2003, 09:50 PM
Yes, the speed of downloading is way under the 187kB/sec that I am supposed to get with Sympatico HSE. And now it has fallen to 2.7kB/s with a projected completion time of 39 more hours! There must be a bottleneck somewhere.

Racer X-8

The Nero demo software worked! I burned a CD with it & just finished watching it. Yay! Nice CD.:)

(Windows XP)

Hey Canada, was it you that caused the blackout? :D

Canada
08-15-2003, 04:11 PM
We heard about the blackout while my wife and I were away at a hotel in the boonies. Lucky for us, Montreal and environs are on a different grid.

Now that we're back, I found the techhighlights.zip folder saved to disk thanks to you guys and emule. I'm not sure how to unzip it though. When I open the folder, then click on the .iso file, it just freezes up. I downloaded nero and tried burning the CD but it seems to be writing the .zip file, isn't it supposed to convert it to an mpeg or something first?

red_rx8_red_int
08-15-2003, 09:49 PM
It's not freezing up. It takes a looong time. At least it did for me with XP. Try doing a search of your hard drive for techhighights and you'll see a temp file in a temp directory--remember where that directory is. Then double click the zip file (folder in xp with a zipper) you'll see the iso file. Right click the iso file and select copy, then get to where you want to paste it and right click to paste. It will appear to freeze up. Now use new my computer windows to browse to the temp directory (and maybe to the zip location also, I don't remember) and all of a sudden the moving file box will pop up and mine said something like 39 minutes remaining. It took about 8 minutes. This is a huge file and the unzipper built into XP appears much slower than the previous stand alone PKunzip.

Racer X-8
08-15-2003, 10:52 PM
emule downloads techhighlights.zip which is 528,147 KB.

You must unzip it first BEFORE using Nero. Double-click this .zip file. What unzips is techhighlights.iso which is 548,969 KB, which you gotta save to your hard drive. You should at this point now have both the .zip & the .iso files saved to a permanent location on your hard drive ("My Downloaded Files" is a logical place for them).

Did you install all 3 nero downloads? I did. (The second download wouldn't install until I updated my ActiveX. While I was at it, I did a lot of other Windows updates - some "critical" ones) Anyway...

Fire-up Nero StartSmart. Without clicking, put your curser over the second selection from the right that looks like a safe with 2 cd's - called "Copy and Backup". The sub-tasks change to a group which has "Burn Image to Disc" (top-right in the sub-tasks). That's the one - click it. (Click Demo.) A browser window titled "Open" will automatically pop-up for you. Browse to, select & "open" your techhighlights.iso file. A "Burn Compilation" window opens. With a new CD-R in your drive, click the "Burn" button.

When burned, the CD will be loaded with 561,373,184 bytes of stuff. It's root directory will have 37 files & one folder named "Xtras", & that folder will have a total of 12 folders under it. The disc is self starting, but in case it doesn't, run "RX8.exe" in its root directory.

Hope this helps...

Canada

Thanks to you guys' help with Nero etc, I got it to work. :D What an interesting CD this is! My dealer hasn't seen this tech highlights CD yet so I'll drop him a copy...when I pick up my car, that is (next week, I hope).

Alrighty then! :D

Somebody out there still has to do this. All this will come in handy.

I think I agree with the others in the previous thread - Nero rocks. I'm gonna see if it's what I've been looking for in the way of DVD recording...the demo is good until Aug. 31st.

You sure you didn't cause that blackout?

OK I have one a little bit off topic, being a work station computer, needless to say I do not have a burner available. Is there a program that is known out there that will allow me to use the iso file from my hard drive?

Yup. Ever heard of WinISO? Pretty sure they've got evaluation copy on their website... guess what the url is :) ok ok ok... www.winiso.com (http://www.winiso.com)

Just open the .ISO with this and you should be able to watch the clips individually...they'll extract to a directory on your hdd
