Carjacking – Epping

19 January 2006

Eastwood Police are searching for a sports car stolen in a carjacking at Epping this morning.

Shortly after 1am, a 25-year-old man had entered his Mazda coupe parked on Rawson Street when he was threatened by a man with a handgun.

The offender forced the owner from his car and drove from the scene. The car was last seen heading north on Ray Road. The owner was not injured.

Police are currently searching for a black 2003-model Mazda RX8 coupe with NSW registration ARP-852.

The offender was wearing a black balaclava, had a medium build with broad shoulders and was wearing a black Adidas jumper and dark blue tracksuit pants.

Anyone who sees the offenders or the stolen Mazda coupe should immediately contact Triple 0.

Yeah, terrible news, I heard it this morning on my way to work. Ironically, not far from Epping...

Hope the owner is okay...

Yeah, mine is a 2003 model.

Running out of warranty in a few months :-(

edit : I see you are American. You have a funny system over there
(at odds with the rest of the world, as usual), where :

year = year + 1

Australia is not a year ahead of the US when come to name their year of production LOL

Your 2003 bulit car is called 2004 in the US and you are into 2007 cars right ?

BTW it is a tragic news... I am sure he cannot drive far - he has to stop for petrol somewhere ... I bet he does not check the engine oil before the long drive too...

I know it is a bad joke but the car is replacable... I hope the owner is ok and not too frightened.

the car probably won't go that far. It will be used as a ramraid getaway car in the near future.

Bit of a worry, this. Last thing I want is for the 8 to get the same reputation as the WRX. Why don't these ramraiders use 4WDs, FFS

Which brings me to the question as to whether it might be possible to program the 8's locking system so that it automatically locks the doors once you are moving. That, at least, might minimise the risk of car jacking

Ask this question on the main forums. Every modern car I have ever been in, in California, has this feature. From hire car corollas, to lexus's, to G35s ... I imagine the rx8 is the same. Probably California law or something.

btw, the 8 is already the getaway car of choice in the UK from what I see from time to time on google news.

Getaway car of choice?

Umph....make me wonder... so what do you guys really do for a living? Contract work? Day job and night hobbies?

There seems to be a pretty big contigent of RX8 owners here online during the day? Eg Taka. Doctor by day (so he says), robber by nite? Adrenaline junkies?
It would explain why track days are done with so much gusto.

Rotary Neds...

There has got to be a few overly-knowledgeable RX8 drivers here who are have possible dubious professions? Noticed any "too good for commute driving" sort of drivers during track days? Ned kellys on wheels?

Another trend from the motherland may yet surface again!

Haha good one Eric...

Everyone wants to be the Stig.

I think Perry McCarthy resigned as the Stig not long after his ID reviewed.... I wonder if it is something to look forward to... in the next series.

Yes I have written to BBC2
