Miker 01-16-2006, 10:53 PM Hi folks,
I've just joined a few days back because my black RX8 GT is due at the dealer in about two weeks. Great site, great tips, great comment blah blah blah. I've learned quite a bit here.
I'm wondering what some of the ages are in this forum. I'm a 45 year old who dreamt of buying an RX7 through the 80's and into the 90's who could never get the dough together for either payments or insurance. My first car was a Chevette (with Canadian Tire plastic covers for bling) and my recent Celica has just ended its lease life. I live in midtown Toronto and will be using the RX8 as a daily 6K trip to work and more on the weekend, if I can get any mileage on Toronto's congested highways.
I've noticed there seems to be a good balance on this forum between young people who MUST immediately start messing with their rides and others who just appreciate the car and wouldn't think of clear corners (are they even legal in Ontario?). I noticed that on the Celica boards. Tons of Pacific Mall devotees who couldn't leave well enough alone...bodykits, spoilers from hell, neon, xeon, freon, bling, zing, schwiiing, etc. I've been educated about great exterior waxing stuff like that New Jersey showroom shine product, but outside of the obvious aftermarket ripoff junk, there doesn't seem to be much that this car needs right out of the factory.
If you're willing to satiate the feeling I have that I've bought a car too young for me to drive, please let me know I'm not alone and I'll be very happy. I'm in denial that so many under 25 drivers are able to obtain, insure and drive a classic like the RX8. Mom and Dad buying/helping/insuring has to have something to do with it. When I read posts complaning that the NAV system won't do DVD, I wonder just who this car is supposed to attract.
That's all. Flame away. Pleasure reading these posts and I'm sure it will be a pleasure when my car arrives in two weeks.
YT1300 01-16-2006, 11:47 PM 900 years old, have I become... Look as good, I do not.
No, you're never too young to drive this car. It's good for your soul, put it this way. There will always be people who have cars that they do odd things to (why, oh why, put a bodykit on a Porsche, for example), or who own cars that they will never drive properly. There will also be those who have no idea how a piston Otto cycle motor works, let alone Wankel cycle.
Hope the car is all you're hoping it to be.
Chrissss 01-17-2006, 12:06 AM No flames here from this 41 year old from Winnipeg.
Congrats on your new "midlife crisis" toy! :-) I bought my '05 Nordick Green this last summer and just love it. I can't wait to get it back on the road again this spring
I with you on all the mods and bling. None of the power mods do much and are a lot of $ for only a few ponies. And all the kids throwing on turbo's and superchargers just end up blowing their motors. That's ok, though, as they'll work out all the bugs and then we can take advantage of all their bleeding-edge work! <he he he>
Chris...
herbert 01-17-2006, 08:16 AM I'm 41 and live probably just north of you as I'm at Avenue and Lawrence. I drive a Velocity Red. I bought in June '04. I still have the first car I ever owned, a '92 MX-3.
The only things I've done to the car: winter tires, mud guards, floor mats, and zaino. I'm not into all this other stuff. The car looks great the way it is!
Welcome.
btw, there was another thread out there a while back with us older people announcing their ages. I wouldn't say we're in the minority. But there is a good mix.
MrJynx 01-17-2006, 11:26 AM yeaa, i just turned 25 last month, i've had the 8 since I was 23 :) But I got a great job right after uni so I was able to afford it!
But I let my dad drive my car once in awhile because he's in love with it.. he's 56 :)
Also I'm not a big fan of modding the exterior looks of the car.. Looks perfect the way it is :)
blue flash 01-17-2006, 11:40 AM i'm 42 and i've loved every min in this car .since i'm not into racing i doubt if i dump alot of cash into going faster .if i want to go faster i would have bought a vet.the 8 is probally 1 of the best cars out there to get compliments on.
Admiral8 01-17-2006, 11:58 AM I'm 26. Bought the car when I was 25. Not sure if it was the smartest thing financially, but life's too short to worry about every little thing....
Surprisingly, I haven't received a ton of compliments about the car....maybe because there are a lot of 8's in Calgary or something
rotten42 01-17-2006, 12:08 PM Holy shit...what is it about 1964?
41 also in years.....12 in how I act. I don't think anybody will debate that! :hahano:
LiTTleRX-8 01-17-2006, 02:33 PM The 8 is not really my car (my brother's), but I occasionally steal it to drive, I'm 19 years of age. Not a fan of performance mods, or "hardcore" exterior mods. I'm a lip spoiler type of person(lip spoilers rule)...and not the type to glue on an aluminum wing. Only mods planned for the 8 are getting the OEM kit and a lip spoiler, and possibly all season treads.
I actually see quite a few middle aged folks driving the 8 in Calgary and Vancouver, so you're not alone. I think the only reason it seems like there are alot more younger 8 owners, is that the middle aged ones don't tend to join rx8club.

I agree that there are many 8's in Calgary, but I have received quite a few compliments of the car since receiving it in November 05. There are WAY fewer 8s in Vancouver.

who you calling middle-aged!
Butch Brown 01-17-2006, 03:36 PM 50 Bought the 8 May 2004. Always intrigued by the Rotary Engine, I think I'm approaching 30 mentally and don't expect to catch up to the chronological number.

I think there are quite a few "middle-aged" that have joined rx8club.com. Have a look here...

04RX8chk 01-17-2006, 04:05 PM I'm 39 - bought my 8 this past May. I love it the way it is, plus I have other things to spend money on instead of Mods - like shoes... - yes, I am female. ;)
AC_SB 01-17-2006, 04:15 PM I'm 26 (will be 27 next month) and just signed the papers on my black GT this morning. The car looks very classy as is, and I have NO intention of modding its already pristine look. I'm still debating whether or not I want the satin finish gas cap for it...but I do know that I need the $398 chrome side finishers for the side air vents....

1964 What a great year, do you know where I could find some good wine harvested that year?
Yeah, I'm 41 and I don't classify myself in the middle age category. I bought my 8 last year and it wasn't a mid-life crisis toy, hell my life has always been a crisis.
The Rx-8 was my first sports car, I aways was a sports car fanatic but never could afford to own one. I lusted over the FDs, Supras, and the Zs. But my motto is "Own a car, don't let it own you". So in my twenties and thirties, I always had money in my pocket by owning used econo cars and trucks. I love pickups, I sure do miss my last one.
im 19... yea my parents helped me get the car.. and just because i modded it does not mean that i don't appreciate what my parents offered me or that i didn't appreciate the rx-8 for what it is...
however i still haven't met a person who doesn't think my modded rx-8 looks like its almost in a completely different league than a stock rx8
there is nothing wrong, with enhancing the already fine looks of a car... kinda like a boob job on a already hot girl :naughty: jks

Yea! you have to get the strakes. W/o the strakes my black GT looked odd. Once you put the strakes on it will really bring out the side curves of the car.
I hope Brampton mazda gave you a good deal, cuz i got a shitty one from them :)

Mr. Eccentric 01-17-2006, 06:45 PM Hi folks,
If you're willing to satiate the feeling I have that I've bought a car too young for me to drive, please let me know I'm not alone and I'll be very happy. I'm in denial that so many under 25 drivers are able to obtain, insure and drive a classic like the RX8. Mom and Dad buying/helping/insuring has to have something to do with it. Good post.
I'm with you on some points and not on others. I don't see why it would matter if mom and dad help to get someone into an RX-8. I think that's great... lucky them.
As far as the DVD playing NAV system, I'm with you. The point of this car is not to entertain with something you can do at home, but with its handling prowess and one of a kind engine. But, if that's what someone likes, then although I don't agree, it's still not wrong per se.
Congrats on keeping sight of what you've wanted. Enjoy the car.
To respond to the actual point of the tread, personally I'm 28. Don't have an RX-8, but an '89 RX-7.
Being 32 now I've had my 8 for almost a year and it's my first brand new car. Although it was the best car on the road for me, it wasn't quite perfect just yet.
I bought a set of beautiful 19" rims that match the silver, I did tint, put on clear corners since the orange stands out like a sore thumb on the silver (Yeah they're legal, I checked) and I added the painted strakes. I also rounded out the somewhat hollow Bose with some bass and a set of tweeters. I even added a canzoomer because I'm a techie and I truly enjoy spending hours with my laptop refining the powerband and feeling the response.
IMHO Customization is like adding your own personal stamp. What I'm saying is that I'm making it truly mine allowing me to enjoy it more, and that's something you just can't buy prepackaged.

my maturity afe: 12 (as my friends put it).
I am soon getting my rx8 too... I feel it is never too late to get the car u always want.. i just want it now so that i can enjoy it while i am young... life is too short for me to wait for a later date... besides.. 4 years of waiting for a car and still wanting it .. is enough for me.

Miker 01-17-2006, 09:26 PM Thanks all for your great replies. And to the younger members, I didn't mean to suggest that parents helping with the purchase was a bad thing. Your mom and your dad are my peers. And we seem to have limitless amounts of money for our kids. I know a couple who bought a Civic Si for their kid...he NOZ'ed it and blew the engine two days after taking delivery. And mom and dad are blaming Honda!! And how many 40 year old parents are defrauding insurance companies by listing themselves as primary drivers when their brood are farting around with engine mapping? Truth to be told....when I got my Golf TDI a few years ago I was on a few message boards that suggested every old fart owner was blowing up engines re-mapping the engine control for a few stupid HP.
I am psyched about this car....45 or 19 it's a pleasure to drive and I'll report back on that floor mat and footlight accessory upgrade I bought! See you on the road. As abs016 writes, it's never too late to get the car you want!
DarkBrew 01-17-2006, 10:36 PM I'm 45 and bought the '8 'cus I loved the car but now a few months down the road I've added painted strakes and clear corners. I just could not help it; I had to modify it. This car is an obsession. Help me before I mod again!!! Wait, I hear a new exhaust system calling to me... and some sway bars...and a new intake and ....
7andan8 01-17-2006, 10:44 PM 44 here ... and I am surely enjoying my fastest car so far. The van takes care of the kids, we have a truck for the big stuff and I have my toys ... RX7 convertible for sunny weekend days and my 8 for the daily drive. I enjoy the OEM look of the 8 as well. The appearance package is a must! And although I like some of the mods I see on our younger owners cars, I will leave it to them. In 20 years, our OEM RX-8's will still be on the road and looking sweet. I'm afraid the majority of the tricked 8's will be on thier second/third engine and paint job...and thier value will show it.
Want an example ... Ebay for 93-95 RX-7's ... OEM ones with low miles bring the money!
BlueFrenzy 01-17-2006, 11:34 PM I'm 27 and have owned the 8 since I was 25. Well .. bought it for myself as a one week before my 26th birthday present (yes ... I celebrate one week to my b-day ... more presents that way:)). I think that you'll find that the members on the board tend to be more mature (mentally that is) and that the mods that are done are USUALLY minor. Nothing too radical like those civic or rsx boys. Funny thing is, people who actually propose huge GT wings, radical kits, paint jobs or street racing usually get flamed .. and end up leaving.

spd frk 01-18-2006, 02:17 PM I am 22 (23 tomorrow). I bought the car in 2005 to celebrate passing my CA exams. NO help from my parents saved the downpayment myself.
Can't imagine a better way to celebrate.
Hybrid-RX8 01-18-2006, 07:54 PM 25.....
My 8 is extremely modded... Granted I appreciate the stock 8 and sympathize to those who wish to keep mods to a bare minimum....... but this is how I have my fun....and to each their own.... the mods I do are not tasteless... and who can say "NO, I wouldn't like a 300+whp RX8."
I know the value isn't kept with a car that is highly modified..but I bought this vehicle for the sheer enjoyment of the drive and not rational purposes of holding value.... hence my decision to modify this vehicle.
These forums are BUILT by enthuasiasts who modify the car to one extent or the next, whether it be a fog light accesory or turbocharger. I think we can all learn to appreciate everything this car has to offer.
Keep the MODS coming! It's part of the fun!
ChrisP 01-18-2006, 10:55 PM 53...Had a 7 in the very early eighties. The 8 is stock and I love everything about it - with the possible exception of the slightly rusting wheel hubs and dull looking calipers. (I might just make a mod and paint them). The twenty years in between the two cars were spent buying the house, raising the children, saving for their education etc. while driving mostly automatic Accords. Boring and conservative. The 8 is anything but...
TLovr 01-19-2006, 02:32 PM got the car when i was 23 on my own, bled and still bleeding through the nose for it, and love every minute i'm with her, i have a good job, I'm a wheel man. no help from parents, friends. i have always wanted a rotory engine ever since i played GT1 on the ps

I was informed after my purchase at the ripe age of 40 that I was suffering from a mid life crisis by my wife.
I just wanted something that was a lot more fun than the 96 Accord.
If I have to be having a mid life crisis to drive this car then bring it on.
VR GT no mods.

I told here it was a 4 door car with an excellent safty record, 6 air bags and great brakes....when that didn't work I told here that if I was having a real mid life crisis I'd have a blonde babe with big t*ts in the passenger seat....end of conversation. :mdrmed:

Miker 01-20-2006, 09:09 PM Great stuff. So now I know that I have to buy:
Clear corners because a safety feature is just uncoool. Amber sucks. Stealth amber rules!
Strakes because every car needs to look like a hockey player with two stitches on his face. (Mats Sundin mod).
I'm going to tweak the BOSE stereo by adding a 35 pound subwoofer chamber that destroys any attempt at hearing external noise, like the scream from a pedestrian caught under my rear wheels.
I'll slap a Bugatti spoiler on the back to keep my aero profile in-line when I'm pulling Prius torque off the line.
Gotta get a U.S. address for the Tony Soprano Naino polish from New Jersey.
I've already ordered high performance leather cleaner from New Mexico to make the seats faster.
I'm sure the cup holders are sub-par and have investigated illegal Bolivian cup holder sources.
Engine cover is lame. Have found a lacquered cover that sprays neon fluid into the face of anyone looking under the hood.
Rims are rotten Quebec aluminium. Looking into highly valued African conflict aluminium because them rims is bananas.
Hood is gone. Getting a Mazdaspeed 6 hump hood for aesthetic purposes.
Exhaust tips will be made from Unobtanium. Suck in the AT4 format but offer butter splutter in the M6.
Already ordered Space Shuttle plexi-gloss resin product for moonroofs from www.nasa-ricer.com.
Side mirrors are too angular so they're being replaced by Nintendo side consoles.
Freaking headlights are like every other vehicles. Thankfully, there are Pacific Mall plutoniums to replace my xenons.
Drilled billet pedals? Suck! I'm installing metaphysical connections that operate with the simple command of one's mind. (Not for AT4).
Final upgrade: laminated owners manual. Belgian plastic pages. Resistant to nacho cheese and low reflection.
Getting my black GT on Jan. 25th. Enjoy your rides, people, no matter what you do to it. It's all good in my book.

Now I baby the RX-8. Winter storage. I have driven it for two summers and the car has about 14K.
I do not drive it fast but I love to go fast on 90 degrees corners and leave behind anyone who tries to tailgate on a turn.

I fully agree! It's my friends who drive appliances who don't get it :wallbash: ... they would probably feel a lot younger and happier if they drove an 8! (and no, it's not the 8 that makes me feel young and happy, it's cause I am that I have the 8, mental age, I wouldn't be legal to drive yet)

Rx4x2 03-20-2006, 09:36 PM You never get old, you only get older - really!
If you're lucky to be healthy or you work at it, that's the way it is.
Born in the first half of the last century - will be 59 this year.
Had a new charger in '69 and a new 'vette in '71 (easy on an engineer's salary and living at home). No other new car for me until my 8 last November. This car is much much more fun.
Enjoy.
DrDiaboloco 03-20-2006, 09:36 PM Man, a guy can't make a joke without a sarcastic response? ;)

mat4419 03-21-2006, 06:29 PM Hey, I'm 25 and i bought my 8 a year ago. I've been saving my money for many years to buy a dream car. I did the right choice!!
tekk's 8 03-21-2006, 06:56 PM Hey, I'm 25 and i bought my 8 a year ago. I've been saving my money for many years to buy a dream car. I did the right choice!!
Hell yeah fellow 25 year old(and buying your own car YOURSELF!!!). :ylsuper:
glassetcher 03-21-2006, 10:24 PM Sorry I didn't catch this thread earlier. But for all of you 40+rs contemplating an '8, check out this thread that I started a year ago when I was trying to figure out if I really should do this (get an '8). Well, more realistically, I knew I WANTED to do it, but how to convince the better half! P.S. All of you 16 to 39 yr-olds probably won't be interested in this one.

After a year of driving this car, and modifying it, I can only say "I wish I had done this 10 years ago!!!" :banghead: :banghead: I haven't been so engrossed in anything in many years! :ylsuper: :ylsuper:
If you really enjoy driving a refined, nimble sports car with a "reasonable price tag", - albeit with a few caveats_ this may just be the one for you!
Zoom, Zoom! :ylsuper:
zenaissance 03-26-2006, 10:37 PM 36 and still saving to get a Lambo. Until I hit the jackpot, the 8 is the best I can afford for the moment- but the mileage in looks and performance I get from it sometimes makes me feel like I'm driving something a heck lot more exotic and pricier.
Maybe at 40 I will just get me one of those Lotus cars- perhaps I should put myself on the waiting list.
htamacas 11-27-2006, 04:21 PM I'm 25 living in Victoria, BC.. Have gotten tons of compliments. From kids walking on the streets to vancouver bellmen asking me if its a Massarati... I love my 8, its a 2006 Special Edition Copper Red.
Phantom Menace 11-27-2006, 04:36 PM I'm 31 and used to HAVE to modify everything I owned. From bicycles to motorcycles, skateborads to cars. Now, I too, appreciate STOCK. IMO it ages better and is of better quality. For example, when looking for used cars I never pay a second glance at modified cars because:
1) They might've been abused/dogged
2) Might have parts I don't want and surely the stock parts are gone
3) The loud tin-can sound does not impress anymore
I used to have a 89 CRX with...you name it. And a car with a kit is different than stock. You have to drive differently--scan the road for bumps all of the time and take speed bumps at funny & wide angles, etc.--and is not as structurally sound. I had to remove most of the bumper material to mount the WingsWest kit on my Honda. After time, paint chips, scapes, etc. start to show and parts warp and squeak. Even "beat" doesn't attract me anymore. I like to hear other things than the bass in a song as well as conversation & road communcation.
It started with a 1991 300zx I thought about restoring. I wanted to restore it all to factory OEM specs because I saw how badly the aftermarket parts aged. Truth be told, the OEM parts are much more expensive and of much better build quality. The really "nice" 300zx's were those that the owner's kept STOCK and just maintained mechanically. This is true with any other car as well.
Now, the only mod I'm considering is an intake--mostly because old habits die hard and to just to accentuate the cool engine sound, not drown it out. Even with that mod, I'm still on the fence.
Mazda engineers know a thing or two about how much air, etc. the car needs and I don't have an engineering degree. I do, however, like the OEM stuff. Like the aero flares and accents.
Then again, maybe I'm just getting "old?"
*hey you punks! Get off my lawn!"
StealthTL 11-27-2006, 05:15 PM Still not willing to reveal my real age, but let's just say I'm one year older than last ime this thread came up!! :mdrmed:

Smokin_LaLa 11-28-2006, 05:24 PM Got the car on the date that is listed under my name, was 30 at the time now iam 31, loved the car in its rx7 days, fell in love with the 8 when i saw it as a concept, loved it even more after seeing the price
Rems31 11-28-2006, 06:49 PM 25. Picked up my 8 when I was 24 and 50 weeks old. Waited to turn 25 to get it for the insurance premium savings (my insurance company was nice enough to give me that lower rate a few weeks in advance). I wanted to get this car since I first saw it back in like second year university.
cajunrx8 11-28-2006, 09:09 PM Hey you could be a Nuffie!!! Get your parts from Nuffie Speed and Marine.
I am a 41 year old going on 15!!!
I pass the third of a century mark in 25 days... but you'd never know it looking at me; my day is not complete until some patient stares at me and asks something along the lines of "are you sure you're old enough to be my doctor?" I think the best was "why don't you go back and play".
I'm still waiting for my BB to return from the body shop... it's been six weeks, does it normally take this long for a car to be fixed? Sheesh.
26 Years old . Bought the car at 24 ....
chynaman 11-30-2006, 08:47 PM 23 year old. Bought the car this summer without any parents help. it is stock and there is a great chance it will remain stock.
-=drift=- 11-30-2006, 11:17 PM Lol same here, just got mine, but will take a while to pay off.
7andan8 12-01-2006, 06:54 AM Several young new members on the page ..... Welcome! Your gonna love this car!
1stgen8 12-01-2006, 07:00 AM What's up 7andan8. I got more parts coming. Anyway I just turned 36 last week.
Rasper 12-03-2006, 10:28 PM I'm feeling a little bit better. I'm 56 and just couldn't wait any longer. Two kids moved out of the house and two more to go. So in now own a Velocity Red 04 6MT. Love it just the way it is. Wouldn't mind an ipod adapter but other than that it is incredible!
I put Michelin x-ice on it as it has to be driven through the "mild" winter we experience in the deep south of Ontario.
Hope you enjoy your ride as much as I have enjoyed mine!
dying_here 12-03-2006, 10:40 PM Been following the 8 back ~ 2002 before it came out, and finally bought one couple months ago on my 22 bday. It is a 2006 Cooper Red Special Edition and I am loving every second of it. So far it is completely stock beside tinted windows (unless you count winter tires as a mod :P) but hopefully will have AutoBahn front and Mspeed Side installed this coming summer. Next purchase is going to be a house so I will probably drive the 8 for yearssss to come. going to drive it to the ground!
dbright007 12-04-2006, 12:39 AM 40 - and yeah, mid life crisis car. Seriously debating the mods cause I love the car, but also love spending it elsewhere.
Mod the car - go to vegas? Mod the car - go deep sea fishing again? Mod the car - go to races?
dying_here 12-04-2006, 01:03 AM Mod the car - go to vegas?
