That actually doesn't look too bad. Do you have any close up pics?

I tried the paint thing and it didn't turn out as good as I had hoped but it isn't terrible.

I'll post a pic later this weekend.



i used Scotch Super 33+ electrical tape and wraped it then cut the back off at half the width of the flat sides. the tape is very flexable and sticks really well, time will tell how it holds up but if it fails then I can always re-apply or paint.

I also took a small piece of wax paper and mounted it inside to get rid of some of the bright reflections that were coming through.

the picture was at night i will take a better one tommorow, it really looks good and the shade is really close to the buttons.

here is an update of using electrical tape (+33)
the three pices of +33 tape overlap I then took a razor and cut the last half off as you can see in the pics.

the wax paper in the back didn't shade the light enough so i used 3 layers of black sharpie colored scotch clear tape.

one more picture of it lit up. not the best but you can see that the lights match much better.

I didn't want to break anything by shoving it.

The install is the same as the removal.....you have to wiggle a little to get it to move along the shaft. The top of the base should be flush with the panel.

Received my yesterday, looks great. I haven't decided if I'm going to paint it before I put in on though.

Got mine last night--thanks again vice for setting this up. Took no less than a minute, Bascho's right--looks like it came from the factory. Well worth the $$$ --it's a great mod !

**Warning**

If you do tape it like I did, once it is all the way on it will be slightly tighter fit. Very slightly. Not enough to hender its push on and off function, and just tight enough to were you can't feel the click volume up and down.
If someone didn't know better they would't notice it.

Just want to make sure everyone knows this because once its on it will be A PITA to get off if you don't approve it.

BTW once i pushed it all the way on it looks great the color of the tape and the buttons is near perfect.

Got mine installed...I gotta say that I like the way it looks already. It actually brings out the silver trim that I hardly noticed before. Now, I have to keep my daughter from touching the knob. It has to stay str8 up!!! LOL!

I've just received mine. I can't wait to put it on!

I won't be painting or anodizing or taping I like it just the way it is.
I like the faux C/F background too. And I like the way you can't see the 'rx-8' logo from the side.

This idea has come up before, but I think the smaller knobs in a sliver would steal from the radio knob. I do not think Pettit has any plans on making them though.
They may look good so it is an open market as much as I know.

I tried painting the flat part of the button but, the aluminum doesn't hold the paint very well.
Next I tried electrical tape but I didn't like the way the button dragged due to the
extra thickness...
I had some left over 1/2" black vinyl pinstripe tape that is much thinner then the
electrical tape.
It worked much better and I was able trim it off the side of the button.

As for removing the original button, I pulled so hard it removed the pin that goes
into the radio....
It still works, it just doesn't "lock" in place anymore.

Has anyone tried drilling holes in the back of our new button to light up the RX~8 letters?
Someone mentioned this in an earlier post.

I think I'll just wait until Pettit will take care of painting / anodizing / whatever the flat part of the button so it looks like what EyeBall Fixer did (plus hope they'll offer the button with no carbon-fiber lookalike crap) and then I'll buy one.

Just got mine yesterday, hand delivered by vice_grip, actually we met at best buy because I live close but that's beside the point. Tamas I felt the same way before getting it, but the knob is so small it really wouldn't be worth it and it really looks 300% better in person. I really wanted the sides black also until I put it in, but now that it's there, really not nessacery. Again, just make sure you be very careful putting the rx-8 sticker on as it's NOT moving once it's there. Thanks again Vice

I finally put mine on today. Had to pull the car cover off :) The sticker had already lost some of it's stickiness on one side. Are replacment decals(RX8) available? I will pay for it if necessary.

Knob really looks good with the lights on! I too am a little worried about the adhesive on the sticker.

Just pinch the Hell outta the stock knob and pull out. It will come off... There is a "D" ring that snugs it on. A 2 handed pointy finger and thumb pinch should do it.

Has anyone done anything to tone down the brightness of the light coming throiugh the holes? To make it more subdued like the rest of the lights?

Go back to about post 232. Someone mentioned putting wax paper behind it to cut down the light. Anything similar should work. Also check around there and a little later about some tries to make the base of the knob black. I like the look but you have to decide if it's worth the trouble.

Just got mine in and I love it. I know it's a simple cosmetic, but I'm happy with it. As I pulled the mechanism out of the back of the original piece, my sticker fell off between my seat and console. I just spent 45 minutes in positions I hope to never be in ever again, in 108 heat, looking for it... No luck. Once I got the other little piece into the back of the new knob, it fit perfectly. Alas, no RX-8 sticker.

That kind of thing has happened to me time and time again. The 8 has a black hole that opens up at high RPMs and makes things disapear. (Especially under the seats). ;)

I kept moving the seat back and forth (electronically) and my guess is I got a hole in one where the carpet is cut for the circuitry to the seat. I mean, it flat out disappeared and I can't see where else it could have gone. I suppose the good news is, I know it's in the car... Somewhere.

I made my own bass and treble (minor) small radio buttons up myself, didn't turn out to bad.

These buttons just push on pull off like the main radio button does:)

I just got one and put it on. I'm pretty happy with it, though for it to be perfectly upright (with the point down) I have to have the dial in between two "clicks" of the radio knob. The way they have the hole lined up it wants to sit at a slightly sideways angle.

^^ Mine sits the same way so it has to be between clicks as well.^^

Good thing is I rarely touch it because of the steering wheel controls. :)
