Changed to a highflow cat about 1 month ago and everything was sweet until a week ago when the CEL came up. I did a reset (ie the unplug the battery and stomp the brakes 20x procedure) and the CEL went off. It came back 3 days later.

Went to lthe local mechanic this afternoon to do a scan with AutoEnginuity, got a DTC code of P2096 - Post Cat Too Lean Band 1.

Would like to ask for some help here:

a. Is this error critical or quite common for one that have changed to the High Cat?
b. If I leave the CEL (ie disregard), will there be any permanent damage to my RX8?
c. Does this mean that if I go for a emission test, I gonna fail?

i think u've the same problem as mine. Lucky u have someone to diagnose ur car. Did u manage to start ur car w/o any problem??

 

No problem starting, runs and feel like always.

 

you are going to fail emissions because you have an emissions related CEL.

have you contacted the sellers of the hi-flow cat to ask them if they have experienced CELs from installation of their product on an RX-8?

 

here is what the manual says about 2096

* The PCM monitors the target A/F fuel trim when under the target A/F feedback control. If the fuel trim is less than the specification, the PCM determines that the target A/F feedback system is too lean.

* Diagnostic support note This is a continuous monitor (Fuel system).
* The MIL illuminates if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition in two consecutive drive cycles or in one drive cycle while the DTC for the same malfunction has been stored in the PCM.
* PENDING CODE is available if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition during the first drive cycle.
* FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
* The DTC is stored in the PCM memory.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

* Leakage exhaust gas
* Rear HO2S malfunction
* IAT sensor malfunction
* ECT sensor malfunction
* AIR system malfunction
* Leakage intake-air
* Front HO2S malfunction
* MAF sensor malfunction
* Fuel line pressure malfunction
* Fuel pump unit malfunction
* Leakage fuel
* Ignition system malfunction
o High-tension lead malfunction
o Incorrect power supply to ignition coil
o Ignition coil malfunction
* Insufficient compression
o Metering oil pump malfunction
o Engine oil condition malfunction
o Increased oil pressure
o Oil passage malfunction
o Engine malfunction
* Fuel injector malfunction
* PCM malfunction

so first since you swapped cats i would look for exhaust leaks. second what did you do with the rear O2 sensor? if you reinstalled it mybe it is not installed correctly. if you didnt put it back i would venture to guess that is the problem.

 

I've got >9K on my high flow cat with no CEL. If you got it from Random Tech, SR or Rotary Performance I would guess your problem is not with the actual catalytic converter. And there are many things that Zoom listed above. If you had a leak, it would be extremely loud. I had a slight leak in mine for a week or so and the noise inside the cabin was horrible. And even when I had the leak I still had no CEL.
