View Full Version : Aluminum Pedals AT install?
OmegaBob 07-29-2003, 12:54 PM Has anyone installed the Aluminum pedals & footrest for the AT?
Some questions:
1 - Is this a self-install or best left to the dealer?
2 - Does it require the removal of the pedal?
Thx!
JVSpiller 08-25-2003, 09:08 PM I also have an auto on order and looked under the dash of the demo today and decided to have the dealer install the pedals. They charge $100 for the install and it looked like more than I wanted to tackle.
OmegaBob 08-25-2003, 11:13 PM Wow! Forgot about this thread.
Thx for the info... I'll prob go the same route.
flyboyindy 10-15-2003, 10:28 PM I dont know how the dealer gets off charging $100 to install the pedals. It took me all of 15 minutes, and ten minutes was looking for my 10mm socket! The break pedal was the hardest, you actually have to stretch rubber over the pad. Although I think the 180 bucks for the pedals and foot rest was a bit steep it really finishes off the interior! Damn I love this car!

Well, the only potential issue would be if a pedal broke/came loose somehow while driving - does happen. If you fitted them yourself then you're on your own, but $100 for pedal insurance is a little steep. :)
mikeb 10-16-2003, 03:38 AM If I chrash because I installed my pedals wrong --I'll kill myself
OmegaBob 10-23-2003, 12:04 PM Hey guys! Wow! I had forgotten about this thread.
Some questions for those who did install themselves:
1 - Did you install the footrest as well? How complicated was it?
2 - Through I haven't examined it too carefully, it does appear to me that the gas pedal and arm are plastic !?! If I am correct (I hope I am not), you guys think it'd be easy to break during the install or just during some agressive driving? I really hope I am wrong about this b/c I'd figure that it'd be metal.

I have faith in you - you can do it! :-) otherwise drive on over and I'll show you how....
Did you already buy?
RX-MEN-8 10-23-2003, 01:49 PM The dealer installed them for me as well as the side Strakes before I picked up my car.. I did not want to hassle w/ them. It was great. When I picked up the car it was all done including the Tint. The car is running great, I am having fun w/ the A/T, no matter what the other 1/2 say..
mikeb 10-23-2003, 03:05 PM irish your calipers are awesome
JohnMC 01-15-2004, 12:11 AM I recently purchased the aluminum pedal set for my new RX-8 with the automatic transmission. I spent approximately $200 on the aluminum pedal set, and I brought the car to my local dealer to have them installed. After bringing the car in, the dealer refused to install the set. Their claim was that their 'most experienced' mechanic was 'uncomfortable installing the set.' I stated quite clearly that this was a genuine Mazda accessory, and that Mazda provides instructions on how to install the set. They still declined to perform the installation. To top it all off, I cannot even get a refund on the pedal set because it was a special order item and cannot be returned. After getting aggravated from the dealer, I called up Mazda of North America. Their response was that they will try to find me a dealer who will install it. Mazda calls another dealer which is owned by the same company as the first dealer I brought the car to! They are very hesitant to install it also because they said if their parent dealership doesn't want to install it, then they wouldn't want to either. So I had to take the initiative on my own. I called up another dealer who said that it won't be a problem to install them at all. The thing is that now I have to drive over an hour out of my way to get a simple pedal set installed. I had no idea dealers could outright refuse to install genuine Mazda accessories. And, from what I can see, Mazda of North America doesn't care and is no help at all. Of one thing I am certain: This is definitely going to be my last Mazda. :(
Irish_in_a_RX8 01-15-2004, 10:44 PM Thats a shame to hear. Are they honestly hard to install? Perhaps a non-mazda mechanic will install them - i.e. a real hands on modifier...pedals will be nothing.
flyboyindy 01-16-2004, 05:30 AM John,
The whole process takes about 10 minutes. You simply unscrew three mounting bolts on the gas pedal, unplug a three prong harness, and replace with the new gas pedal, pull the rubber pad off the existing brake pedal and replace with the new brake pad, and the foot rest is just two screws and your done! Sounds like you need a diffent Mazda dealer... Dont hate Mazda... Trust me, im dealing with the same shit at my local dealer. There are good and bad in everthing...
justkn 01-21-2004, 08:11 PM exactly as flyboyindy said...and they look great too!
Cerestes 01-21-2004, 08:37 PM For other than my oil changes/checkups and purchasing my car I avoid the dealerships like the plague. I trust many body shops and places locally to do a much better job then my mazda people. Just my humble opinion.

On the instructions, do I really need to disable the batteries? I know it's easy to do, but it's just another step I wouldn't do if I don't need to. Sounds silly I know :P
flyboyindy 01-21-2004, 09:13 PM I didnt disable the battery. And didnt have any problems at all!
my10ae 01-21-2004, 09:21 PM Hmmmm if this as as easy as it's stated, I might go for the aluminum pedal set myself. I just ordered some premium red/black floor mats, red/black leather shoft knob, and rear door protectors. This car is keeping my wallet VERY light lately!! :)
stang0013 01-22-2004, 11:27 PM Changed the pedals myself. As stated before , the hardest part was finding my 10mm socket. Save the $100 to $150 the dealer will charge you and buy something else for the car. The night lights are cool as are the color coordinated emergency brake and shift knob. Good luck. And no I didn't disable the battery either.
Outlaws eXtreme 01-27-2004, 10:11 PM Just installed it, no need to disable the battery... unless you are really cautious. The brake pedal was the hardest to install... wish it was a screw over type thing, but it's a cover up.. imagine putting on a pair of socks size 8 over a size 12 feet. It will fit, but takes time. Don't waste your money having dealer install them.
huhsler 03-23-2004, 05:48 PM UPDATED Question
Someone stated that the gas pedal had 3 bolts. I just installed mine and the unit only had 2 bolts. There were only 2 holes in the unit for them.
Anyone else? Did I miss something?
JSE RX-8 03-23-2004, 09:55 PM i had the dealer install them before i picked up the car. worth the money to get. they look awesome on the car for AT.
huhsler 03-24-2004, 11:02 AM Thanks JSE, but that wasn't really my question. Take care.
stangmatt66 03-24-2004, 01:22 PM Can someone post pics? Do you buy the pedals at the dealer?
Outlaws eXtreme 03-24-2004, 02:34 PM I got mine from Trussville. Matt, if you want to see what they look like, I'm sure you can either check mine or Mikeb's car at the next OC meet.

sry huhsler, i was responding to your orginal question. my bad.
BoxerGT2.5 03-25-2004, 12:06 AM Huhsler.......There is only two bolts that mount the pedal to the firewall. No you didn't miss a thing. Hope you like them
What are strakes?
Are the other aluminum dealer installed accessories cool or...too much? Like the vent trim, the entry sill or whatever it's called on the body where the bottom of the door opens? Opinions?

Any suggestions? (Also, anyone else?)
I spend the past 30 minutes trying to put that damn thing on. I'm so f'ing pissed right now.
BoxerGT2.5 03-26-2004, 11:06 PM To get the brake pedal on I used a snub nose flat head screw driver and a touch of WD40 (the lub can work for you or against you....just have to be patient). I stretched the corners out a bit and then seated the top of the pedal in first. Then I stretched the right bottom corner over (doing this allowed me pop the screw driver between the rubber lip and the metal plate) I shot a little WD40 inside the bottom lip and slid the screw driver towards me. Popped right on......hope this helps
310Guy 03-27-2004, 10:46 AM Thanks for the tip. I was thinking about WD40. I'll give it a shot.
JeRKy 8 Owner 12-17-2004, 05:40 AM I knowthese posts are very old but Imconsidering buying the pedals now. Do anyof you guys who installed them have a pic ofwhat they look like in your car? Im nottalking about the generic accessory pic theyhave online-- Id liketo see a pic of one of yours from the drivers seat tosee how visible they are from afar. Also how havethey held up over the months? Are they easily stained by dirt?
Vertigo-1 12-19-2004, 09:35 PM I've always been curious...with aluminum pedals, do you folks have any problems with your foot slipping? I've always been hesitant about getting aluminum pedals because I'm worried about my foot slipping when my shoes are wet...and it rains a LOT here in Hilo, Hawaii.
310Guy 12-19-2004, 09:41 PM FWIW, the pedals have rubber on them.
therm8 12-19-2004, 09:54 PM I've never had a problem and it rained alot in Florida too.
And this thread was resurrected 5 times, that's gotta be a record :D . I guess some people do use the search feature.
JeRKy 8 Owner 12-20-2004, 04:35 AM Damn -- whenI saw that someone responded tothis thread I thought by chance one of you had posted a pic of them.
