Aluminum Pedals AT install?
Has anyone installed the Aluminum pedals & footrest for the AT?
Some questions: 1 - Is this a self-install or best left to the dealer? 2 - Does it require the removal of the pedal? Thx! |
I also have an auto on order and looked under the dash of the demo today and decided to have the dealer install the pedals. They charge $100 for the install and it looked like more than I wanted to tackle.

Aluminum Pedals... 15 minute install!
I dont know how the dealer gets off charging $100 to install the pedals. It took me all of 15 minutes, and ten minutes was looking for my 10mm socket! The break pedal was the hardest, you actually have to stretch rubber over the pad. Although I think the 180 bucks for the pedals and foot rest was a bit steep it really finishes off the interior! Damn I love this car!

Hey guys! Wow! I had forgotten about this thread.
Some questions for those who did install themselves: 1 - Did you install the footrest as well? How complicated was it? 2 - Through I haven't examined it too carefully, it does appear to me that the gas pedal and arm are plastic !?! If I am correct (I hope I am not), you guys think it'd be easy to break during the install or just during some agressive driving? I really hope I am wrong about this b/c I'd figure that it'd be metal. |

The dealer installed them for me as well as the side Strakes before I picked up my car.. I did not want to hassle w/ them. It was great. When I picked up the car it was all done including the Tint. The car is running great, I am having fun w/ the A/T, no matter what the other 1/2 say..

I recently purchased the aluminum pedal set for my new RX-8 with the automatic transmission. I spent approximately $200 on the aluminum pedal set, and I brought the car to my local dealer to have them installed. After bringing the car in, the dealer refused to install the set. Their claim was that their 'most experienced' mechanic was 'uncomfortable installing the set.' I stated quite clearly that this was a genuine Mazda accessory, and that Mazda provides instructions on how to install the set. They still declined to perform the installation. To top it all off, I cannot even get a refund on the pedal set because it was a special order item and cannot be returned. After getting aggravated from the dealer, I called up Mazda of North America. Their response was that they will try to find me a dealer who will install it. Mazda calls another dealer which is owned by the same company as the first dealer I brought the car to! They are very hesitant to install it also because they said if their parent dealership doesn't want to install it, then they wouldn't want to either. So I had to take the initiative on my own. I called up another dealer who said that it won't be a problem to install them at all. The thing is that now I have to drive over an hour out of my way to get a simple pedal set installed. I had no idea dealers could outright refuse to install genuine Mazda accessories. And, from what I can see, Mazda of North America doesn't care and is no help at all. Of one thing I am certain: This is definitely going to be my last Mazda. :(

Thats a shame to hear. Are they honestly hard to install? Perhaps a non-mazda mechanic will install them - i.e. a real hands on modifier...pedals will be nothing.

The whole process takes about 10 minutes. You simply unscrew three mounting bolts on the gas pedal, unplug a three prong harness, and replace with the new gas pedal, pull the rubber pad off the existing brake pedal and replace with the new brake pad, and the foot rest is just two screws and your done! Sounds like you need a diffent Mazda dealer... Dont hate Mazda... Trust me, im dealing with the same shit at my local dealer. There are good and bad in everthing... |

For other than my oil changes/checkups and purchasing my car I avoid the dealerships like the plague. I trust many body shops and places locally to do a much better job then my mazda people. Just my humble opinion.

I didnt disable the battery. And didnt have any problems at all!

Hmmmm if this as as easy as it's stated, I might go for the aluminum pedal set myself. I just ordered some premium red/black floor mats, red/black leather shoft knob, and rear door protectors. This car is keeping my wallet VERY light lately!! :)

Changed the pedals myself. As stated before , the hardest part was finding my 10mm socket. Save the $100 to $150 the dealer will charge you and buy something else for the car. The night lights are cool as are the color coordinated emergency brake and shift knob. Good luck. And no I didn't disable the battery either.

Just installed it, no need to disable the battery... unless you are really cautious. The brake pedal was the hardest to install... wish it was a screw over type thing, but it's a cover up.. imagine putting on a pair of socks size 8 over a size 12 feet. It will fit, but takes time. Don't waste your money having dealer install them.

UPDATED Question
Someone stated that the gas pedal had 3 bolts. I just installed mine and the unit only had 2 bolts. There were only 2 holes in the unit for them. Anyone else? Did I miss something? |
i had the dealer install them before i picked up the car. worth the money to get. they look awesome on the car for AT.
