another weird noise

Today after work I fired up my car, and it immediately revved up to about 2k rpms and was making a pretty loud ticking noise which sounded like it was coming from the passenger side area.. after a few seconds it went down to about 1k rpms but it was still making the noise.. I also noticed that after i revved the engine a little, the tach would fall to 1.5k rpms, stop there for a few seconds, and then go back down to the normal 800 or so. i drove it home and it seemed fine and now I cant really hear the noise as much.. any ideas? I checked the oil, it is full.

Everything was working fine this morning when i got to work, except for I think my battery was low, which i doubt has anything to do with this.

One more quick question. Does anyone notice that when your car is parked in neutral, and you let off the clutch, it makes a somewhat loud noise? my friend said it sounded like the throw-out bearing.. is it normal to hear that?

sticking neutral switch in the shifter. there is a micro switch on the shifter that lets teh pcm know when it is in neutral. if that sticks the pcm wont know its out of gear and can get a little confused. the clicking is still probably the air pump
