I belive they are going to call it an RX-3 and the piston counterpart its going to be the new mx-3.

if it's rear wheel drive it's goin to be very similar to a rx-7 firts gen .

From the article "The newcomer is being designed and developed by Mazda North America, based in Irvine, Calif."

Maybe it is the same car that people on this forum were participating in Mazda focus groups on.

When you read the article, it never says anything about a rotary engine though. but mazda is going all out with rotaries at the tokyo show. this might hint to mazda expanding the number of cars have rotaries.

To call a new car the RX-7, it would first have to eclipse the last RX-7 in ever way. This will most likely be an S2000 competitor. A new RX-7 would have to be a new Japanese supercar and this doesn't sound like it.

Mazda has said the RX-8 has a planned 6 year life span. That would put the second gen RX-8's arrival at around 2009/10. With this so called mini-RX-8 (or RX-3-ish car) showing up in 2008, that will make an almost back to back launch of new rotary sports cars.

I think Mazda could go one of three ways with this car/platform:
1) Cheap, fun, fairly quick, rotary powered RX-3 "like" entry 2 seater sports car. Competes with the Scion tc.
2) Cheap, fun, fairly quick, piston powered MX-3 "like" entry 2+2 sports coupe. Still competes with the Scion tc.
3) Relatively expensive ($37K-ish base), ultra fast halo rotary car. Of course, that's eveyone's favorite dream car, the 4th gen RX-7.

Mazda seems to be headed towards options 1 or 2. But if we start so see new GT-Rs, Supras, and NSXs making a strong revival, Mazda could have a change of heart and go with option 3.

That was some JDM photoshopper's guess of what it might look like. The JDM mags are notorious about plopping any kind of artist's pipe dream, just to have a picture to go along with their story.
