That was written June, 2004.

To re-phrase “there is a 70% chance Mazda will have an electric turbo RX-8 at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Show”

NOT “ there is a 70% chance Mazda will SELL an electric turbo RX-8 in the USA”. The Hydrogen RX-8 was at the 2003 Tokyo show, I don’t see any on the road today. What you see at car shows doesn’t always show up in the showroom.

So what do you think this method would do for HP/torque/mpg?

 

Just add some torque in the lower rpms. But is adding the complication of an electric motor really worth the hassle vs. just going with a small ball bearing turbo for quick spool?

 

I've heard a shitload of rumors about the show in October, including a supercharged Rx-8 and a new Rx-7. I'd be very surprised if they show anything close to a production vehicle.

 

Has anyone tried this, it seems a lot cheaper then the other turbo kits and install seems a lot easier.

I would like to know if this works on the RX-8, basically you need the unit for 1300 and about 300 more for some nice batteries, thats only 1600. It will probably add about 80 lbs of extra weight in the batteries though.

As an electrical engineer it would make for some fun work for myself as well making charge controllers, over load protection, and stuff.

It's not for track duty though only pratical on the street becasue it can only run for 10-15 seconda before it overheats, the batteries will probably run dry after a few runs as well and will take several minutes of crusing to charge again.

Still most of the time when I'm driving i only need short full throtle runs so it would fit my everyday driving well.

According to the article the whole kit is supposed to weigh less than than a complete turbo kit and cost less than nitrous to install. Wonder if it could push enough CFM to do a decent job on an 8?

 

sc rx8 is probably the renegade rx8. and as for the new rx7, the new rx7 concept car has been around the time when the rx8 came out here. the reason i know this is cause my japanese friend showed me a magazine about 2-3yrs ago on this new rx7 concept car they had. and it looks HOTTTT

 

I used to work in Japan and still visit there on a very regular basis (about every other month). I can tell you that the JDM car mags love to post artists concepts of potential future vehicles. But that's all they are, just artists concepts, there hasn't been any "real" spy photos of a new 7 shown to date.

 

Check out this thread - the maker of that supercharger posted on this board quite a while ago, but there is no sign of this thing showing up on an RX-8.
