View Full Version : Used Mazda Roadside assitance! OIL problem
marky77 07-20-2005, 09:11 AM i used road side assitance the other day cause my oil light came on! THEY told me that they couldnt send a car to check the oil pressure so its best if they send a tow truck and take it to my local service centre!! IT seemed a little extreme! BUT i thought dam its a new car and theres an oil leak! AND i didnt want any warranty issues down the track! SO they took the car to my dealer and latter that day the dealer called me and said that it was low on oil and they apparently put about 2 litres in! AND there isnt an oil leak! AND that rotaries drink allot of oil and i should check it every couple of thousand k's! DO you think this sounds right!!
anyway the moral of the story is that it cost me $50 bucks for 5 litres of oil and they picked up my car! and washed it!! THIS normally costs me $26? so i thought it was a bargain!??
ZoomZoomH 07-20-2005, 09:15 AM are you kidding me, you never checked your oil level???

Getting your car towed for low oil
Gomez 07-20-2005, 09:28 AM Oh dear. In your owners manual the first thing they tell you in the "Owner Maintenance" section on page 8-15 is that the Renesis requires regular checking of the oil. Once a month should be enough in most cases.
Marky...you have some light reading ahead of you :p .
Cheers,
Gomez.

This is actually sound advice! However it would be great if you'd weather the storm and leave this thread up as a pointer to other new owners. This is really an indictment on the poor performance of the sales staff. They should have pointed this requirement out to you.
Please do the rotary world a favour and sell your car to someone who isn't a moron.

Marky.....I did warn you about the storm, mate..... :)
Nemesis8 07-20-2005, 10:03 AM Stand up and make your right hand into a fist and hit yourself quickly. Now sit down and read about your car's engine.
NicoRx8 07-20-2005, 10:16 AM Come on my friend!!!!!!!
page 5-31 and 8-15 of the owners manual clearly states recommending checking the oil at every 2ND Fuel fill-up!!!!!!!!!
How many km have you done without checking the oil level!!!
The dealer you bought it off should also be shot for not explaining this IMPORTANT point.
DO you know your car has a ROTARY engine in it???
Thank god you found this website - it will provide you the education you need to treat your baby right.
marky77... $50 is about the going price for the oil for the RX-8... 5w-30 is a reasonably obscure blend so you're not going to get pricing like you see for more popular oil.
timbo 07-20-2005, 04:50 PM oh dear :o well, it's good to know the warning light works for its intended purpose
wedge357 07-20-2005, 05:18 PM ARE YOU FOR REAL???
Seriously, you buy a $30k+ car and you don't read your fracking manual???
Wear the Official RX-8 Dunce Cap of the week for you, dude...
wedge357 07-20-2005, 05:20 PM They should charge you an extra $69 for being an upside down cookie...
spaldo 07-20-2005, 05:22 PM Give the guy a bit of a break. Since he's only had the car since April, I'm surprised he's used as much as 2litres since his 1000km service, which makes me wonder whether the dealer added enough oil then. I have hardly had to add any oil to mine, even though I check the level regularly.
Come to think of it, I don't think that my dealer really stressed the importance of checking the oil, but i guess most of the population wouldn't check the oil in their cars from one service to the next.
wedge357 07-20-2005, 05:22 PM You are hereby sentenced to reading all the threads in the RX-8 website.
Just giving you a hard time... Now keep up with the rotary updates by reading all the threads.
Revolver 07-20-2005, 06:54 PM Oh boy! :p :D
Well done Marky for having the courage to own up. :)
Let's look on the bright side. As Timbo says, the oil light works. ;) And it sounds like Roadside Assistance errs on the side of caution. I reckon most other services would have told him to buy the first litre of oil he could find, tip it in and then drive it to his dealer.
As to checking the oil - my salesman didn't breathe a word about it and I know plenty of people who don't read the manual when they buy cars far more expensive than the 8. They just get in and drive 'em.
My old man engrained into me the habit of checking oil, water and tyre pressure once a week (okay, sometimes it's once a fortnight) and of course getting onto this site reinforced that for this particular car.
However, in Marky's defence, he's probably a young dude who grew up with modern, reliable japanese cars that don't leak oil and can stand a lot of ignoring before they exhibit any kind of problem. Hell, I'm still getting used to the idea that you can wait 10k between every service.
He now knows better so give him a break.
auzoom 07-20-2005, 08:24 PM I want to know who the dealer is that DIDN'T tell you that 50 times before they let you off the lot!

Revolver 07-20-2005, 08:33 PM Brookvale Mazda Andrew.
Funny really, 'cause the sales manager who I picked the car up from went to some pains to give me a run down on the DSC button and how the bose stereo worked, etc. And I otherwise have found them very good to deal with.
Perhaps he was just having a blonde day and forgot.
takahashi 07-20-2005, 09:18 PM Well... no one read my thread

What is point number 2 in the thread.
Revolver 07-20-2005, 09:22 PM I read it Taka - very helpful it was too. :)
In fact, I think it was one of the first things I read as a newbie.
...Well done Marky for having the courage to own up. :)
Hear hear...
It took over 3,000km for us to use 1 Litre of oil...
I can remember a certain manufacturer of non-rotary cars that used to tell its customers that it would not consider an oil consumption problem until it was using 1.5l per 1,000km AND the dealer had to add the oil and take the measurements...
Whenever you get a new car - regardless of it being a rotary - always check the oil level every couple of tanks of fuel..

Marky read it too, Taka. He even posted about having read it :o .
Hymee 07-21-2005, 05:31 AM Good on ya for owning up, marky. It is all an education.
Myself, I let the "add oil light" do it's job. When it tells me to add oil, I do. Now that might take some of the heat off you and I cop some flack instead. ;)
Cheers,
Hymee.
Note to self... never loan my car to Hymee :p
The rumour goes... last time Hymee ran out of 710 he couldn't find any 710 stores nearby so had to do with a 711 instead
auzoom 07-21-2005, 06:35 AM Hey cant sCanalyser tell you when your oil is getting low and send all sorts of warnings and so on :-D Joking!
Andrew
marky77 07-21-2005, 08:48 AM I never knew that my simple confession was going to cause so much of a stir! I guess I was wrong hehe WELL firstly in my defense the dealer didn’t tell me once that I need to take any special care regarding the oil! Secondly the second the light came on? I thought that it was strange that a brand new car that had been serviced a couple of months earlier was showing that it was out of oil? I thought that their might be a leak or something else was wrong! SO I took the extra pre caution by calling road side assistance and they basically advised me that it was best for me to tow the car and take it to my local service centre! AND I thought what the hell I might as well let them!!
khtm- as far as me being a moron? I think you need to vent somewhere else! I am not here to criticise or put people down! I come here for advise and to share my experiences with other Rx 8 owners
ALL in all guys I guess most of you hit the nail on the head! I WILL be checking my oil more often! ITS a lesson learnt!
PLEASE rx8 gods forgive me :)

At least your a good sport about this, we "gods" can be hard.
Also carry some extra oil on your car should this happen again. A one litter bottle will fit nice in the storage cubby in-between the rear seats.
wedge357 07-21-2005, 09:26 AM There's a post here about keeping a quart beside the windshield washer fluid reservoir.. Oh, I forgot you guys drive on the wrong side of the car! hahaha
timbo 07-21-2005, 05:08 PM Also, to be fair, a number of us early adopters experienced the oil light warning very early, with the orginal sump baffle recall. Scared the bejeez out of me; I was on the freeway; called roadside assist and discovered what an oxymoron that name was; checked oil level, which was just a bit below full but topped off, and light went out.
Hymee! Just remember, the RX-8 sump capacity is somewhat less than the LS1!
Gibbo 07-21-2005, 05:15 PM I have to back Merk on this one, the RX8 is very very hungry for oil. I have had my car for 2 years and when I bought it I was never told once about checking oil or that rotaries even burned that much oil. With all the other cars tht I have owned I would never have thought that a $65,000 car would burn oil, flood, etc.
I thinks it's a friggin disgrace that the car uses that much oil. Anyway unless you have owned a rotary before I don't think it should be taken for granted that you should automatically know how to look after it. I check my oil every 3000km, however I have known instances where it has burned more than 2 litres in that time.
I love the RX-8 but I have to say it's little "quirks" are sh#ttin me a little, one of those being oil and the other being petrol (especially when basic premium was $1.28.9 cents a litre).
Hmmmm....should I becom a porsche wanker.
timbo 07-21-2005, 05:24 PM Hmmmm....should I becom a porsche wanker.
Depends if you want to have continued concern about fuel consumption, major, major frights at service costs, significant paranoia whenever you park your car, and labour under the generally held perception among the rest of the population that you really are a....wanker! :p :D
Gibbo 07-21-2005, 05:29 PM Petrol costs with real performance.......yep I can live with that.
Paranoia....had that with the RX8 when I first bought it and now still.
Labour..... I know this I have my car deaer serviced. $300 for an oil change.
Wanker....well if the hat fits :)
Gomez 07-21-2005, 05:55 PM Labour..... I know this I have my car dealer serviced. $300 for an oil change.
Hello....<knock, knock>...hello......Time to find a new dealership, Gibbo...
timbo 07-21-2005, 06:15 PM Local Porsche dealer service costs: $250/hour!
Gibbo 07-21-2005, 06:40 PM Hello....<knock, knock>...hello......Time to find a new dealership, Gibbo...
Already done, I am lying a little it was the 30,000km service, but esentially the only thing they did was change the oil , the rest is just smoke and mirrors.
Revolver 07-21-2005, 06:51 PM Gibbo you use your car for your business right?
If so, petrol and servicing becomes a right off so what's the prob? :)
And although you're probably worried about your wheels being pinched, I've never worried too much about parking the 8 somewhere. I'd be far more worried about a porsche.
And of course, you can buy 3 RX8s for the price of an 'entry level' 911. ;)
Of course, you could always buy a 10 year old 928S4 but I don't see the point in that.
Lastly, porsches are relatively common whereas the 8 still has a certain rarity. I like that!

I cannot agree more. I think I am goign to pay $300 for a dealer stamp

Yep the car is for business, but when you own the business it comes out of your pocket one way or another. I would not mind the fuel consumption if it performed like it consumed, but it doesn't.
I agree about the pricing, however I can be driving a 18 month old 911 S for only $400 a month more. I guess I am sick of being dragged off by every knob in a car that has 2 litre engine or larger.
It is the hoon coming out in me again, it surfaces about this time every year.
Anyhow, I still love the 8 but I am contemplating putting it on the market.

Mate, how about giving expression to that inner hoon at Wakefield in October? We've a serious lack of Yellows, too ;) Carn!
Gibbo 07-22-2005, 12:04 AM I would have loved to, however I have a conference in Adelaide from the 23-25. Setup day is the 22nd, so it rules me out. Trust me I wanted to go very badly, however work has to come first this time.
