Problem with a lugnut

Yesterday I traded in my auto 8 for a used Manual with a little over 4k miles on it. The car was a goodwill buyback from mazda because of overstated HP. After they washed the car, my friends, brother and I were walking out and one of my friends said there is a lugnut missing from that back tire. Skip 3 hours (not sure why It takes that long ot put on a lugnut, but then again I dont consider myself an expert)

We get a call saying the car will be ready at 3:30 we decide to get there at 3:00 so my friend can look over the car while its lifted up, If they didnt catch the lugnut who knows what else couldbe wrong. We tell the guy at the front that is what we want to do and we walk back to the car. They are hammering on the lugnut with what I would say is a 4-5 pound hammer. My friend (the one who spotted the missing lugnut and is very knokwlegable in cars) is very confused to why they are doing this and asks. The guy working on the car tells him something about threads and they have to hamemr it in, the rest was mumbles to me.

My question is are they telling me the truth about having to hammer a lugnut in or so there something else wrong with my car. And should it have taken 3 hours to do that.

On an aside when we drove a little bit a whirring noise was comming from the back tire and on our way back it got worse and my friend noticed the car was vibrating some, so it is back at the service center.

Yeah, somebody screwed up and didn't want to put a new stud on so they hoped they could beat on it with a hammer to get it on there. Obviously that doesn't work.

Was the wheel on the hub while they were beating on the thing? If so, I'd be asking for a new rim. Alloy rims aren't made to withstand that kind of impact force. Not to mention bearings.

they were probably replacing the stud. most likely it was damaged, hence the missing lug nut.
