View Full Version : RX-8 gas mileage
SanJoRX7 01-30-2002, 02:08 PM Anyone have any idea about what kind of mileage this ride is gonna get? Considering what the FD gets, and that this is a far newer and more technically advanced engine, I'd expect something >25mpg, but you never know.
Also wondering if it'll be a LEV vehicle (maybe even ULEV?)...
Johnny 01-30-2002, 04:29 PM 30mpg would be real nice, don't you all agree?
veloceracing 01-30-2002, 10:37 PM Well you have to sacrifice power for gas mileage, and this is a sports car not an econo box
econo*box (ee-kahn-oh-bah-ks)see: HONDA
SanJoRX7 01-30-2002, 11:00 PM You know, that's not entirely true...first off, with 255 hp in the 3rd gen RX-7 and it averages around 20-25 mpg or so. Since 1995 (the last year they were imported here) it's been 7 years, and with that a lot of technological advances have been made, not the least of which is the Renesis engine, which makes 250bhp *normally aspirated*, which is most certainly cleaner burning than the turbocharged FD.
Anyway, the point is moot...I'm not saying I won't buy it, I'm just saying that it *is* possible to have lots of HP and decent mileage.
veloceracing 01-31-2002, 12:11 AM yes it is possible, but i wouldnt be suprised if it wasnt though
Jerome81 01-31-2002, 05:06 AM Hey, first post. I luckily stumbled upon this site as a link over at http://www.miata.net if any of you are Miata lovers as well.
Anyway, on this topic, I had read awhile back that the RENESIS was 40% more fuel efficient at idle than the 13B twin turbo of the FD3S. While I understand idle and everyday driving are not necessarily the same (we probably can't expect a 40% increase in overall mileage), I would guess that there should be a substantial jump in overall mileage from the FD engine.
Seems rotaries have a bad rap for being gas guzzlers. To them I say they aren't any worse than comparable pistons that put out the same power, and if you can show me a 1.3L that puts out 250 horses I'd be surprised. Most 250+ V6's will probably get worse mileage.
Anyway, nice to be here. ;)
liondogs 01-31-2002, 01:11 PM Mazda has done a lot of work to improve gas mileage on the rotary engine per an interview with Mark Fields. Reliability, Fuel Economy, Oil consumption and emissions were targeted by Mazda's engineers for improvement over the 3rd Gen RX7. I suspect Mazda needed to improve MPG so as not to screw up their CAFE number.
carbonRX8 01-20-2007, 11:16 PM 30mpg would be real nice, don't you all agree?...You can't blame the innocent, they are always guiltless. All you can do is control them or eliminate them. Innocence is a kind of insanity.

typej 01-20-2007, 11:32 PM I say RX-8 is far from frugal. It gets worse gas mileage than some of the V8s like LS1 & LS2 (corvette). I average around 18mpg with half city and half highway driving (when i am not driving fast).
06 VW GTI with DSG, I average around 31mpg highway and 26mpg city. Yeah, it's possible to achieve high power and decent mileage. Just not rotary engines.

What the fuck? Why bump a 5 year old thread?
carbonRX8 01-21-2007, 12:13 AM Why indeed?
Raptor2k 01-21-2007, 12:31 AM A good sign for you to be questioning yourself

rxevolved 01-21-2007, 01:02 PM I heard they're gonna PRODUCE the RX Evolv concept!!!!!!! And they're gonna call it the "RX8"
Isn't that crazy?

EPA ratings for the RX8 (2004) are; 24 MPG Highway, 18 MPG City. Your RX8 mileage will very likely be different. Guess which way.
1.3L
encorez 01-21-2007, 09:06 PM How many pickup trucks get better gas mileage than our 8's?
Winfree 01-21-2007, 09:19 PM Does better than an SUV....
Does better than a 1950 Buick
Does not do as well as an 15 year old Mazda 323 - but then it doesn't hold 2 hay bales either!
tmak26b 01-21-2007, 09:37 PM I dont know. I drove the RX-8 for 40 miles in the cold on a lot of trips less than 15 min. The car used 2.7 gallons! God, this car is thirsty.
rxevolved 01-22-2007, 09:09 AM Lots of short trips like that, with warmup, and then turning off kill the mileage in this car. I used to drive to work every day on a two mile commute. Now THAT would kill my mileage
Raptor75 01-22-2007, 06:06 PM Good day I am the RX-8's patron saint of poor fuel economy, I do love to bashing Mazda for this car's crappy fuel economy and their shitty attitude towards it.
11 to 12 mpg city, Mazda has confirmed this is normal for the RX-8, if I baby the car (revs always under 3K) I have gotten 13.5 mpg city.
Highway has been 16 to 21mpg depending how I drive it. With cruse control I could probably hit 22 to 23 mpg.
Some report better, I have not seen it myself and again MAZDA SAYS THIS IS NORMAL MILEAGE FOR AN RX-8.
Enjoy.
carbonRX8 01-22-2007, 06:10 PM Bujezus people, this was a random resurrection. Not an invite to discuss fuel economy FOR THE JASILINITH TIME!!!!!!!!!!

OK, now flame this man.
This crappy MPG sux, Mazda should be ashamed.

And I Like Pie!!!
davidwanj 01-23-2007, 06:20 AM I heard that you can lean your engine to make it run faster and save a little bit of gas, but that would require you to get a test pipe so you don't burn your converter....
maybe a new air intake would help also

captain mercury 01-23-2007, 12:16 PM hi ive been reading up on the rx-8's gas mileage, and i came across this thread. does anyone have any tips for increasing fuel economy? does pie do something im not aware of? thanks for the helpful thread!!!!11!!1111!11!!!
delhi 01-23-2007, 12:34 PM if anything, eating less pies will surely help increase gas mileage by keeping the driver's weight down. So brocollis and peas for all!
shaunv74 01-23-2007, 02:57 PM Steamed corn is good too.

lol this thread is old. but anyway, i wish i got 25mpg :(
Ericok 01-23-2007, 03:44 PM According to J.D. Power, the number one complaint of Hummer H2 owners is gas mileage (this is true, not making it up).
Reuters News Service: Hummer owners, frustrated with the vehicle's excessive fuel consumption, ranked the SUV last in the latest JD Power initial quality survey, according to Reuters. In the survey of consumers during the first 90 days of ownership,
shaunv74 01-23-2007, 05:35 PM No one said they were smart. They did buy a hummer afterall.
Alright let me try and put a nail in this Zombie's coffin.
For all those people that actually want to talk about gas mileage I did a 15 second search on "gas mileage" and pulled up the meaningful threads. Have it it!
