View Full Version : VIDEO: Greddy turbo 8 at dragstrip - 14.0sec
adrian-1 06-10-2005, 01:52 AM I got my 17" wheels for autoX'ing and drag racing the other day, thread here (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=63570) . Made it out to San Antonio Raceway Wednesday night. My best time was a 14.0651 @ 97.68mph. My friend video taped the runs and I edited it down to 4mins (15MB). Thanks Nemisis8 for hosting it.
Video link (http://www.nemesis8.com/videos/dragstrip%20060805.wmv) Right click and select "Save As".
Some other info:
Temperature was 86F and humidity was also up there. Dropped the rear tires to 29psi. Car weighed in at 3180lbs with me in it (2980 for the car alone). Car number was 84.
I noticed that I shifted into 4th gear much sooner than with my 19's. I'm not sure if it's due to gearing or faster acceleration due to less wheel weight. (old rear tires - 275/30/19; new tires - 245/45/17)
I can get into the 13's by working on my burnout and launch. I'd like to spin the tires longer and have them warmer. It seems 6k rpm launches worked best for me.
The boost level drops off quickly. Peak was 42kPa (6psi) and 25kPa holding (3.5psi). I'm looking into getting a wideband O2 sensor to tune my AFR. The RP supercat leaned it out a little. Also, I don't want to up the boost (with boost controller) without knowing my AFR beforehand.
Sigma 06-10-2005, 02:02 AM Great video. Very well produced.
MazdaManiac 06-10-2005, 02:17 AM Wow! The car can do better than that!
Though your ET was almost a whole second faster, you MPH is within 2 or 3 MPH of my RX-8 before the turbo.
Your MPH (the true indicator of power) should be closer to 102 or 104 MPH.
EDIT: I now I see why (just watched it). You have practically no boost right where you need it most.
You need to fix that.
XDEEDUBBX 06-10-2005, 02:17 AM Great video adrian! I was hoping for a high 13 but hopefully next time! Great runs..im glad you spanked on the wrx and the slurbo civic...hahaha
TR1GGERx1 06-10-2005, 02:17 AM very nice vids. fun to watch, make more!!!!!!!
slllygrl10 06-10-2005, 04:18 AM Wow sweeeet !!!
cas2themoe 06-10-2005, 08:47 AM You can most def get in the 13's! You'll only get better at the drag strip with time! Try going when the humidity is down a little more.
Either way good job!

Correct. I'll be calling Greddy to see what the boost is supposed to drop to and at what rpm. It may be due a leak somewhere.
The lower ET is mostly from my other mods (midpipe, flywheel, clucth, wheels/tires) .
very nice vids. fun to watch, make more!!!!!!!
More coming. I'll probably do an autox within a month.
Nemesis8 06-10-2005, 01:42 PM Thanks Nemisis8 for hosting it.
Your Welcome! :D
About the hosting: My server download time is pretty good right now. Any problems for anyone? Bandwidth currently is 20,000 MB per month, and I am at 21% as of today.

No problems here. Just took me ~ 15 seconds...
Nemesis8 06-10-2005, 02:30 PM Adrian, what was your clutch again?
adrian-1 06-10-2005, 02:59 PM Adrian, what was your clutch again?
Bonez clutch set, found here. (http://rx7.com/store/rx8/rx8drivetrain_clutch.html) I think I misspelled it on the video.
Rotary Rasp 06-10-2005, 03:12 PM Awesome video!
Moostafa29 06-10-2005, 03:49 PM Nice vids. Practice practice practice. With a good launch you'll be mid-high 13s.
Red Devil 06-10-2005, 03:59 PM Great video, thanks for sharing.
VelociRedBeast 06-10-2005, 05:05 PM Mazda where's your drag video? o.O
Mugatu 06-10-2005, 05:07 PM According to that video, when you had the video in the car, your dash showed no orange traction light to show you disabled the traction control...which means you still had your traction control system on when you raced.
Is that true? If so, how come you didn't turn it off?
army_rx8 06-10-2005, 05:11 PM ^good question
Mikelikes2drive 06-10-2005, 05:21 PM i think u should be holding onto your steering wheel more securely :D maybe on the side or something? and yah turn off your traction control xP
oh and EXCELLENT videos :D Share ur auto-x videos too when you go
MazdaManiac 06-10-2005, 05:40 PM Mazda where's your drag video? o.O
Yeah, I'd like to see that, too. That would make a great TV commercial.
Jedi54 06-10-2005, 06:06 PM Adrian,
GREAT videos!
can't wait to see more of them. When's the date for Auto X'ing?
ÜberJumper 06-10-2005, 06:27 PM Nice!
Just curious, but why smaller diameter wheels? Are the wheels + tires the same overall diameter when you compare the 17" to the 19"?
Sigma 06-10-2005, 06:42 PM Just curious, but why smaller diameter wheels? Are the wheels + tires the same overall diameter when you compare the 17" to the 19"?
The wheel diameter is roughly the same but the weight savings are HUGE. He's saving 12lbs on each rear wheel.
canaryrx8 06-10-2005, 06:53 PM nice work adrian, I almost felt bad for the Honda, that el camino was pretty sweet and you almost had it. car's coming along nice, HeatWave is just around the corner too :)

Traction control was off. Trust me, I've forgotten before and you'll know it right away.
Pressing the "DSC off" will turn off the TSC [Owner's Manual, pg 5-23]. The "DSC off" was illuminated on the lower left gauge (out of view from camcorder).
I believe your talking about holding the DSC OFF for 5 secs to get the orange indicator to come on. I will try that next time but doubt it will make any difference.
The TSC never blinked "ON" during my burnouts or runs so it was never active.
Adrian,
GREAT videos!
can't wait to see more of them. When's the date for Auto X'ing?
June 25th is the next autox I can make. It's only a practice run, so I can really test the limits of the Azenis.
nice work adrian, I almost felt bad for the Honda, that el camino was pretty sweet and you almost had it. car's coming along nice, HeatWave is just around the corner too :)
There was another Honda civic there running 11's. Thing was gutted out w/ MT's and turbo.
As far as heatwave, I'm going to see if the dealership will sponsor me and pay my entrance fee. I'll put their dealership banner by my car for them.
adrian-1 06-10-2005, 09:00 PM Nice!
Just curious, but why smaller diameter wheels? Are the wheels + tires the same overall diameter when you compare the 17" to the 19"?
What Sigma said, for weight.
The diameter is almost the same (0.2in bigger now). I could have picked up some gearing with 245/40/17's tires which would've been 0.8 inches smaller diameter. But that also means my car would've dropped 0.4 inches more.
I don't want it any lower since I've got MS springs and a bodykit. The front lip is already scraped up pretty bad on the underside.
Miata site has a tire calculator too figure all this out. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

this is texas the humidity never goes down  lol
JeRKy 8 Owner 06-11-2005, 12:07 AM Great video. Hopefully sometime soon we'll see another one from someone else with the SSR turbo on it and a different outcome against the Cobra.
Jdunsh 06-11-2005, 12:52 AM Great video, best turbo'd video i've seen so far. Can't wait to see more.
BlueEyes 06-11-2005, 01:22 AM Looks like you're driving with quite the gangsta lean.
adrian-1 06-11-2005, 03:22 AM Looks like you're driving with quite the gangsta lean.
You can't see it, but I had a 40oz in the cup holder. :p
My "home depot" camera mount was alittle short and my shoulder blocks the RPM's.
JeRKy 8 Owner 06-11-2005, 04:06 AM I kind of drive with a gangster lean because of how far back Mazda decided to place the clutch.
ZmeuZmeilor 06-11-2005, 07:10 AM ever considered to buy an El Camino  ? that thing is scary in terms of acceleration... impressive
SilverEIGHT 06-11-2005, 09:58 AM Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
army_rx8 06-11-2005, 02:22 PM finaly got a chance to watch the video...imust say i agree with who ever sadi it..this is the best video of an rx-8 at the drag strip. good deal...i like you set up...how is it as a daily driver? same as stock just more power?
mikefrombarrie 06-11-2005, 02:39 PM 14seconds 1/4mile time is really good!! But, from what I counted it cost over $8000 to get it there!
Kind of makes me not want to invest so much money for such little gain
army_rx8 06-11-2005, 02:40 PM i think his car can do much better than the 14 he posted up...guess only time will tell.
adrian-1 06-11-2005, 03:21 PM ...i like you set up...how is it as a daily driver? same as stock just more power?
Besides the increased power, the suspension and shifting are the big differences compared to stock.
Stiffer shocks/ Sway bars/ strut bars improved the handling. Stock was good, but the way it is now is perfect.
The clutch is alittle harder than stock and the RP short shifter improved the shifting feel.

My boost isn't holding and I need to get it tuned (emanage map, running rich 7k and above). Once I get these fixed it should be in the mid 13's. I'm also going to up the boost to 8psi in the future.
Yeah, $8k is about right for the "performance side". That doesn't include the "show side" (body kit, stereo, 19" wheels,....)
You gotta pay to play.
DARKMAZ8 06-11-2005, 03:46 PM great vid!!!!!! good to see someone dragging a turbo 8. I do think you could be easily in the mid 13 range. I'm shooting for low 14's with my base as soon as I get some tires for my gram lights.
devious12 06-11-2005, 05:27 PM Great video, glad to see the 8 beat a WRX. Well put together clip.
Mugatu 06-11-2005, 10:35 PM Great video, glad to see the 8 beat a WRX. Well put together clip.
it BETTER have with a friggin turbo. Stock for stock, and RX8 should be able to keep up...with a turbo RX8, it better smoke it.
olddragger 06-12-2005, 11:57 AM Hey Adrian,
Remeber me I bought your cz unit a while back. Great vid. Thanks. You do have some tuning to do as you should be below 13.5 with that car. All note Adrians reaction times--pretty doggone good man! Have fun getting it right! See how once the tires hook in 1st and the turbo has spooled then the great lunge forward --then it is like the turbo died.
Good driving.

JeRKy 8 Owner 06-12-2005, 03:06 PM I'm surprised the mods weren't a little apprehensive about this thread. Look his RX-8 made two kills! :D
clmantis21 06-12-2005, 03:21 PM first off... great vid!
Really liked your 60' on your run vs. the hatchback. Was that hatchback turbo'd? Sounds like a type S bov on the pre run burn outs, but at over 15 secs it sure didnt run like it was (or was it your bov)? When I had my gsx I had 60's of 1.7-1.9 so you had a good 60' on that one. I would really concentrate on your 60' to get your times lowered.
On your psi not staying up.... possible boost leak? I'd test for a leak if I was you. Doesnt take very long and it makes a world of a difference. Is your turbo ported and/or clipped?
great job overall! :)
edit: i see now that you DO have the type s bov (looked at some of your pics)
RotaryManiac 06-12-2005, 03:29 PM Great Video. You should get your turbo rx8 into the mid 13's at least though. It seems sad to spend 8000 and not be using the full potnetial of the car.

Those pics were old. I have the type RS BOV now. The hatchback sounded like it had the type S BOV. I don't know what happened on their run.
The turbo was installed the way Greddy sent it. No porting done.
adrian-1 06-13-2005, 12:45 AM I'm surprised the mods weren't a little apprehensive about this thread. Look his RX-8 made two kills! :D
I think "legal" kills are allowed. ;)

Yeah, I've ordered a leak tester (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=169435) and hope to get it in and test by next weekend.

that should help you a lot if that's what your problem is. You could have built one yourself to save some money... but that looks like a good one.
dsmtuners... miss those days. I used to live on that board. You'll learn alot about turbos there.
G'Luck!

Overport 06-13-2005, 05:10 PM Nice vid, Adrian...what are you boosting your turbo at?
rotaryred 06-14-2005, 08:16 PM what was your 1/8th mile time and trap? Trying to compare it to mine.....
adrian-1 06-14-2005, 08:50 PM what was your 1/8th mile time and trap? Trying to compare it to mine.....
1/8 ET and mph : 9.0401 @ 78.12
rotaryred 06-15-2005, 12:59 AM dang my best is 9.49 at 75 with a midpipe and exhaust. Get your leak fixed....I wanna try with 17's i have heavy ass 18's that im sure slow me down. Wanna go to a 1/4 soon and try and run a 14.4 to 14.3 N/A.
PoLaK 06-15-2005, 01:14 AM That launch where you did a 2.0 60ft looked pretty good, but i can't tell if you wheel hopped or bogged from the outside, if you wanna get that half second, assuming its not a boost leak and even if its not, you've got to be shiffing faster.
On some of your shifts ur dropping below 7k shiffing at 9k you shouldn't be lower then 7.5k also your shift into 3rd isn't what it should be, if I'm breaking the tires loose stock shifting into 3rd and even little chirps into 4th you should be plentyable with a turbo to do something fierce...
Do you have RP's short shift that might help you out a bit too not to mention its 10x as fun to drive.
Thanks for that video .... very cool
LostAngel 06-15-2005, 02:06 PM ...I want.....
That's a nice vid!
adrian-1 06-18-2005, 05:05 AM Well, I found the cause of my leak yesterday.
It was a small slit on the boost gauge hose that connects onto the intake manifold nipple. I probably ripped it when I was taking it off/on to see if switching to the other nipple made a difference.
The car doesn't drop boost after a second anymore. Pulls alot more in the mid RPMs. I should be able to get high/mid 13's on my next trip to the dragstrip.
Nice vid, Adrian...what are you boosting your turbo at?
At the time of the video I was at 6psi for 1 sec and 3psi holding. This was due to a leak.
This past week, I found the cause of the leak and I also increased the boost to 7psi by adjusting the wastegate actuator 1 full turn tighter. No detonation so I'm good.
if you wanna get that half second, assuming its not a boost leak and even if its not, you've got to be shiffing faster.

Yeah, I've got RP's short shifter, it's loads of fun. I don't know about shifting faster, seems like I gear grind if I go any faster.
adrian-1 06-18-2005, 06:05 AM I've posted a DIY on how to leak test your turbo kit. Thread here. (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=64314)
Kel Rx8 06-18-2005, 01:44 PM heres my prediction 13.87 for next run :)
I dont believe shifting looks like the biggest problem, but boost leak halfway
down the 1380 is killing you.but it looks like you found the problem.
great video
Moostafa29 06-18-2005, 07:22 PM I say 13.6, anyone wanna place bets?
BomberNYC 06-19-2005, 02:26 AM That video is Hot bro! PLEASE post another video with your leak fixed!
army_rx8 07-13-2005, 04:13 PM 13.5 is my guess :D
Fanman 07-13-2005, 04:43 PM I'm doing 7.5 psi (rev range) with 6 psi on the top with no detonation & (currently) no boost control. Mechanic said he can do 8 psi & maybe 6.5 psi on the top. Play with your actuator rod a bit. 6/4 is what I had before (& 2 leaks also) & I can tell you it feels way better now.
adrian-1 07-13-2005, 04:50 PM Play with your actuator rod a bit.
I'll do that. :p
My goal is to have 2 maps. The stock 6psi and then let the boost dropoff like Greddy said it would and the other is use a boost controller to get it to hold 7psi throughout the rpm range (that'll be enough power for me).
I'm guessing 13.5sec when I go back. After getting it tuned and fixing the leaks, the car feels much better.
jenkins-crew 07-13-2005, 06:03 PM freakin awesome vids...
D Baize 07-16-2005, 01:50 PM Great video Adrian, what type tires do you reccomend for replacement on my 18" wheels?
M3I0A5 07-16-2005, 05:45 PM adrian-1, how much WHP do you think you're getting out of it? 250? Thanks.
adrian-1 07-16-2005, 06:09 PM 218whp/ 180tq, I posted the dynosheet in this thread. (http://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?p=956942&postcount=44)
That was with 6psi and it drops down at high rpms. I'll be installing a boost controller soon to get it to hold 7psi all the way to redline.
M3I0A5 07-17-2005, 02:56 PM So you did a 14 flat with only 218 WHP? That's pretty nice numbers man. I really like your set up. Good luck with your quest for 13s!
Do you have a CarDomain set up?
Moostafa29 07-17-2005, 05:35 PM Its probably from the big jump in torque. Nice results either way.
adrian-1 07-17-2005, 11:28 PM My cardomain site. (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2040671)
I'm holding off on going back to the track until the weather gets alittle cooler (probably Sept). Also, I want to find out what that recall due to heat issues is all about. Kindof scared since I'm.....
- in Texas
- turbo'd
- was on the dyno tuning for over an hr a few weeks ago. :(
rx8wannahave 07-18-2005, 10:14 AM The front lip is already scraped up pretty bad on the underside.
Personally...this was a sad thing to hear...lol, wink wink...
Anyway, I can't wait to get home so I can check out the video!!! Has anyone heard from Philodox? It's just strange to me that Adrian is making 218whp at about 6.5psi while Philodox's 8 is making 245whp at that same psi?
Why such a huge difference? Considering Adrian also has a high flow mid-pipe/cat it’s just strange to me that he is making only 218whp???
M3I0A5 07-18-2005, 12:57 PM He does have a boost leak...
Moostafa29 07-18-2005, 01:07 PM I think he dynoed after the leak was fixed.
rkostolni 07-18-2005, 01:54 PM I've noticed most of the earlier kits were dynoing around 240 and the new kits seem to be around 220 and look like shit at high revs. I would love to know why.
devious12 07-18-2005, 06:54 PM Didn't Greddy release a new map or something?
rkostolni 07-18-2005, 08:44 PM Ya but some people have gotten custom tunes and while that improves the high rpm smoothness, they still are only making around 220 or so.
devious12 07-18-2005, 09:17 PM Ya but some people have gotten custom tunes and while that improves the high rpm smoothness, they still are only making around 220 or so.
That's kinda dissapointing for 5k total cost. Have these people making 220 or so fixed the leak that was mentioned.
Fanman 07-18-2005, 11:47 PM My kit was running at 4 psi when I first got it. Had nothing to do with the tuning of the A/F levels. The actuator rod was set too loose. Then we adjusted it & it was 6 psi/4 psi & played with it again & it is now 7.5 psi. Now, we have leaned out the map & to run with 7.5 psi.
army_rx8 07-18-2005, 11:49 PM if you don't mind me asking...how much did all this tweaking cost you? or did you do it yourself?
rx8wannahave 07-19-2005, 10:41 PM Nice vid...I finally was able to see it.
Deuse 07-22-2005, 01:59 PM damn thats kinda disapointing, i run a 14.5 stock, if i was running the greddy turbo i would hope for a better time then 14.0 even with only 5-7pounds of boost

Are you running on the same track ? I don't think so. Just because you run a 14.5 on one track, doesn't mean you can run a 14.5 on all tracks. You have to look at the improvement from stock to turboed RX8. In this case it was over 1 sec. in the 1/4 mile time. Too many times novices just look at the magazines and see 14.5 or run a time at their local track and think that is applicable to all tracks, & all conditions. He was in the 15's & now he is almost breaking into the 13's. That is pretty impressive. I have a track near me that is pretty much the closest one to Los Angeles where the elevation is about 3,000 ft., it is blazingly hot, & the traction always sucks. If you could do the 14.5 there with your stock RX8 I would give you $1,000. Every track is different, if you read his initial post you would see that he has an incline at the end of the 1/4 mile.

sorry i guess i came off to mean in my last post, didnt mean to offend
Fanman 07-22-2005, 05:15 PM Don't worry, I don't think anybody is offended just you can't port through numbers from one place to the next. I have seen S2000's with I/H/E running 15's at my local track. Hell, I drove the hell out of my supposed 13 sec. car & I got 13.9 sec. Every track is different. Traction is a big point. Some tracks are newer & have nice new surface, or replace their surface on a consistent basis. Some don't. That is why you see people with drag slicks drop a lot of time off their 1/4 miles a lot of times. We had a guy here once with a nasty Viper that did his first run with his regular, aired down street tires, then swapped it out for slicks on the next run & dropped .8 sec. off his time. Back to back.
