Anyone had a windshield replaced?

I'm gonna have to have mine done as you can see in this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/gulf-rx-8-forum-32/yay-looks-like-back-dealership-me-unfortunately-57378/

Anyone had it done at the dealer and if so, how much did it cost you?

My insurance company's reccommended company has given me the best price so far and they'll come out and fix it tomorrow, but their best price is $474. I just had my rear view mirror replaced for rattles and I really don't want to go back.

I'm really not sure what caused it. I think it was from a chip in the window but maybe putting that rear view mirror in caused it to crack. I have no idea.

Windshield crack

I've had my 8 for a lil' over a year now, but 3 days after I bought it I was driving behind my father-in-law's F-150 and a pebble cracked my windshield. I shopped around for the best prices and the dealership was the cheapest. If I remember correctly it was about $350.00. I didn't use my insurance company since my deductible is $500.00. I would just pay it to save you from paying more on insurance, unless it covers it completely. Good Luck with it all man, I know the feeling. :D

Price sounds abot right for a stock windshield. You can get an after market for cheaper.

Our windshields don't like chips. The chips turn into crack due to the heat from the rotary.
That;s why you can leave the car and come back from the store and find it cracked as big as yours.

I had mine replaced due to a crack also. I had it done by Speedy auto glass who replaced it with one made by PPG. I hope the new one is stronger than the original. The original had a small rock hit and within a day it was 14" crack. The guy who installed it noted it was expensive, over $500. I have full compresensive so I didn't care.

I had my windshield replaced at the dealership under warranty. It developed at crack at the base. There was no evidence of a rock chip that started the crack so I took it up there and they replaced it. You should check it out. Could get a new windshield for free!

Our windshields are expensive due to the fact the the radio antenna is integrated with it.

The factory had some problems with thermal expansion around the windshield trim. The trim itself is metal and with it heating up and getting cold it is just a matter of time on some of these.

That could certainly be the case here.
I dont really know what caused it. It got warm the other day and bam I had a crack. The warmer it got, the more it cracked. Everytime I drove it and put it away, the crack got longer.

I thought it was from a chip, but that may not be the case. The chip I thought it was from is still in the window.

I have no idea now. I'll just take it over there tomorrow and see what they tell me.

I used safelite autoglass and had it replaced for $235 only 2 weeks ago. My insurance deductible is also high so I was out of pocket. I had estimates as high as $704. The windshield theu put in was a PPG glass and it is a perfect fit. Even the area that allows you to read the VIN number is perfectly lined up.

I've just had mine replaced, also by Safelite, for the same price, around $235. I think their website quote generator is messed up because I got the quote online there first, for $474, then called their 800 number and got the lower quote. I had the guy make sure he had the right model because of the difference. He'd asked all the same questions as the webpage.... And I don't have the homelink.

The new glass installation looks fine, though I haven't really gone over it with a fine-tooth comb just yet. Will water-test this weekend.. The "shading" is in the same place over the mirror, though the dot pattern is not *quite* as perfect as the original -- that's a minor nit I can live with. The glass manufacturer was PPG.

no difference with homelink unless you cut the wires... the wires aren't attached to the windshield. the homelink is only held up against the windshield so replacing just the windshield shouldn't cause problems for the homelink.

thanks, Ngo. I'll report back what the dealer says about replacing the windshield under warranty (there are no apparent stone chips, so it may be a "stress" crack). Should know this Friday.

The latest: There apparently IS a difference in the two windshields- Safelite says the windshield for the auto-dimmer mirror/homelink mirror IS different- it has a small groove for the wiring (unseen when installed) that you'll need to specify when ordering. Safelite quoted $478 for it but said the non-homelink was still $475. Another local shop quoted $515 but the third try was the charm, (another local shop) at $225! (and they verified it fits the homelink). So... it pays to shop around.

As for the "stress crack"- there WAS evidence of a stone chip, so mine will NOT be covered by Mazda warranty.

Just picked up a chip from a 3/4" rock tossed back by a pickup. We were both going 75, so I guess I'm lucky it's just a chip - hopefully it stays that way... The dang thing looked like a freakin' asteroid coming at me

BTW- The company that quoted $225 and did my install was "Triumph". call 800-555-1212 to get their toll free # or look 'em up online.

i just had my windshield replaced for the second time...the first time at the dealership $478! and a year later (yesterday) for $250 for a company to come out to my house and replace it. I have the homelink..and they brought the right windshield and installed it quickly and perfectly. However when I went to drive the car 2 hours later, it wouldn't start. Could they have disabled something on my car?...it's not the battery..the battery is fine....the car just wont engage. The dealership is closed all weekend for service...and I've tried restarting it 4 times...even over night with no luck. Any ideas I can try before having to tow it to the dealership??

New question in an old thread ...

So I got a rock chip in my windshield this past June. Safelite came out and fixed it in my driveway. Yesterday I notice a spider web starting to form from the old chip. I called both my insurance company and safelite and they both told me I'm in for a new windshield. I have a $250 deductible, and I have to get the OEM part approved before they will install a genuine Mazda part.

Anyone know if the fitment issues are the same with Mazda vs aftermarket windshields?

BTW, i have both homelink and bose ... so I guess I should mention that when finding a place to install?
