dmp

The most modified car had a RacingBeat or other similar catback. I was pretty amazed that all cars came within a few hp of one-another...pretty consistant, (low/mid 180s) except for the 206whp car.

Nemesis8
02-27-2005, 04:56 PM
Yes, mine had an AFE dropin air filter and Racing Beat catback exhaust.

it must have been the 'Type R' sticker on the hood :p:D

Yep, all he had were Greddy Stut Tower Braces and some coilovers I think. The engine and exhaust was stock.

Edit: I think "renwar1" needs to change his forum name to "206" :D One thing to remember, that was an un-corrected reading. The correction for our day was .96 to get an SAE reading I think... Chime in if I am off on that.

That'd still be 197 to 198.

I still wanna know how he did it? How come everyone else, including you with a couple mods, were only hitting 180's?

Was it ALL because of that straight pipe? I can't believe that'd add that much power. It just seems so weird he got so much more power.

NO, the straight pipe did not hit 206, it was "renwar1" that hit 206 bone stock because of his A/F ratio was leaner.

Shelby's car modded by fastmike with a straight pipe hit 190 something...

Ok fine, I'm still curious as to why a bone stock rx8 killed the rest of you so bad then, is he just special or something? Do you all have the M flash or are you on older flashes?

Do any of you have the PCM Flashes done?

Nemesis8
02-27-2005, 05:54 PM
I need Dan and Darin to chime in, but the 206 car was on "M" flash - it's an oddity at best. What I think maybe happening, is the MAF is reading differently??, and his PCM is running a very safe leaned out curve because of this???

Notice the questions marks - I'm confused also. :)

I just got mine this last week, so I'm assuming I'd have the most recent flash right? 2005 with 13 miles on it was how I picked it up. Or should I go into the dealership and make sure?

it most likely does not have the N flash...if it is an 05 it could have been on the lot for months...no flash done

I wish I would have logged the airflow, and taken a snapshot of the baro, the IAT etc. on this and a different car to see if any of the sensor readings were really different.

Renwar1's A/F was slightly leaner than the other cars in the 7-85K range...but not much

I figured out wat was wrong with my car......A beer to the first one that was there that figures it out :D Except Nemesis8...I already owe him one...he would get two.....just didn't get to go cause I was freaked out by my Dyno..........or lack of one :D

I actually shot that in digital DVM60 tape. The video teaser is low quality mpeg-1. I can post mpeg-2 dvd quality, or just make a DVD if interested...

That was a pretty cool day for the community. I personally like the flaming red marshmellow cooker. Kinda looked like after burners of a F-14 tomcat when the flames came out. As for my car performing the 206 whp (corrected: 198), I personally think something went wrong in dyno-ing. But I'll take my elation with a grain salt and enjoy my little sunlight. OR! My car was dirty and I think that added to the hp performance. :) Instead of the type R sticker theory.
My car is bone stock, as other have said, with greddy strut bars (front and rear) with a Tein Type Flex Coilovers. So the suspension shouldn't matter too much.
Oh yeah! Besure to watchout for renegade Volvo S40's in the highway. DMP, Nemesis and I almost met ill fated sliver 8's curse.

I'm curious as to what other guys with stock cars were getting (other than renwar1). I'm guessing lower than 180 that the guys with Canzoomer were getting. Right?

Wasn't clogged......the catalyst came loose, and compressed into the outlet due to the exaust pressure....the higher th pressure...the tighter it plugged the outlet....think really big champagne cork. Major back pressure build up :D

Bad Cat!
That makes sense.
No flow = no hp.

I do not think that Shelbi's car has the M flash on it.
The dealer wanted her back and she has been ignoring them.

Here is a cut/paste of other post:

Thanks to EVERYONE that helped with tools/lifting/stock exhaust etc.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I reviewed our graphs(No "M" flash as far as we can tell).
I think that building a "real" straight pipe/turndown that has a bolt on flange at muffler will be the way we go in the future.
Muffler for day to day/ straight pipe for autox events.
Glad that we did 2 sets of pulls..one set with straight pipe and one set with stock exhaust.
We had more TQ/HP(some areas had big improvements 10+) from idle up to about 8K+ then I think that we were getting a misfire or something at top and graph flattened out with straight pipe.
Maybe we will try better wires with pipe and do another test.
Car did run leaner with straight pipe and it took off a lot of weight out at the end of the car which is also important for us.
Lower polar moment of inertia with straight pipe is a good thing.
I think that Shelbi's car made 193 peak with stock exhaust but I think that is would make in excess of 200 IF we car cure whatever is happening in the last 1.5K rpms.

I thought the 138 HP car had a bad plug but he said that was not it.
Hmmmm...

sae correction=? and whats the forumula to correct your raw rwhp numbers?

Nemesis8
08-04-2005, 10:05 PM
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has created a standard method for correcting horsepower and torque readings so that they will seem as if the readings had all been taken at the same "standard" test cell where the air pressure, humidity and air temperature are held constant.

The equation for the dyno correction factor given in SAE J1349 JUN90, converted to pressure in mb, is:

http://wahiduddin.net/calc/images/density/cf.htm1a.gif
where: cf = the dyno correction factor
Pd = the pressure of the dry air, mb
Tc = ambient temperature, deg C The pressure of the dry air Pd, is found by subtracting the vapor pressure Pv from the actual air pressure. For more information about pressures and calculation of the vapor pressure, see Air Density and Density Altitude (http://wahiduddin.net/calc/density_altitude.htm).

The relative horsepower is simply the mathematical reciprocal of the correction factor.

From my knowledge, they do not hinder the dyno session. We did not pull any sensors that day.
