hi, today i got my 6 months service from my dealership, the guy who works on my car, he being working for mazdaspeed 35 years. He was great guy and knows a lot about the rotary engine.

He told me the K&N make the car lose 10 hp and it give bad gas milage because it sucks all the hot air in, and there is no any intake cover. also the pipe connect to the air intake will get hot very fast and make the air all hot through the engine, and it will damage the engine. K&N give great sound but it's bad for the performance and gas. I don't know what to do now :(

Sorry about my grammer.

But it makes so much noise.... !!!

Actually many of us on the board know this unit isn't the best design for this car. A few of the early buyers had bad idling issues & showed no hp gain....and made a lot of noise. The Rotary Extreme unit & the upcoming Racing Beat unit were made for the RX8 much more so than the K&N unit.

It's not so much a problem with the filter. It's a problem with the design.

I bought Abbid's K&N setup (he was a great to deal with!)

......I took it around my little town at high revs to get a feel for how it ran, but I had to take a different route home in case the people on the way out had called the COPS!

Holy CRAP it's loud! Serious vibrations from 5k up.....

At 7000 revs, the homelink mirror started to vibrate in sympathy!

At W.O.T. the noise in the cabin was deafening!

......at 9000 AND W.O.T. the 'honk' could attract geese from the next county!

I can appreciate the construction - it is, by far, the biggest K&N I've ever seen, and the ends are both made of CF, but it is off now, and will likely stay boxed, (under the terms of the non-proliferation agreement with my neighbors in the next town!)

Thanks AbbidGuy, I owe you one! ;)

S

( I must admit, I de-boxed the brute for a little video I was involved with! They wanted some winter Auto-X/ABS/DSC footage for a pilot of a new car program, so I gave the sound-guy some serious sound clips to edit!)

Stealth, could I borrow it for flow testing? I'll send it back when I'm done.

but it's such a fabulous design?!! It must've taken years to draw up the specs on it. I can just imagine the engineers talking:

engineer #1: "Hey, we got any pipes layin around?"
engineer #2: "Yeah, whole bunch over here."
engineer #1: "Slap some filters on 'em, and let's go have a beer."

Edit: maybe that's kind of harsh, an aftermarket intake like that might work for some cars (ones that have crappy stock intakes), but not on the 8.

It really does appear that they ported a design over from another car without really thinking about the eccentricities of our car.

More proof that not every mod improves performance.

I know R.G. maintains that it is a design problem and not a filter problem but I had a similar problem with my R.E set up that the original poster of this thread had with his intake. Once I switched to a Blitz SUS filter with a homemade reducer the idle and noise problems disappeared. Believe it, or not, my R.E. intake is almost as quiet as the factory airbox. Of course, we have looked at this issue ad nauseum and determined that the factory airbox flows quite well and any swap will usually be a waste of money. Why did I keep my R.E. unit, then? Because I already spent the money, it looks cool, and it's a great place for my tuner stickers. Gotta allow myself a little nonsensical bling from time to time!

So are you guys saying that my k&n filter does nothing except sound cool?..That is a piss off man

so far most if not all the intakes do nothing but sound loud. Can be said the same about the exhaust.

Store, I would argue that the K+N doesn't even sound good and it gets the MAF oily, as well. Too much hassle for me to deal with.

What about the regualer K&N Filter and not the Typoon Intake Kit? I'm sure its not going to make a big difference anyways but does just the regular K&N Air Filter ok for the RX8?

all you need is a Green filter drop in and your fine..anything else is useless for the N/A engine...

I experienced the idle problems with just the K & N Intake installed. Then I installed the RB exhaust and now the car idles (at operating temp) at 750 rpm's all the time. No longer irratic. I am wondering if anyone knows what might have caused this?

i have the K&N filter and i have had no problems at all ... as a matter of fact i have had a HP gain out of it .....

Well give it a shot. Every 8 acts different. It might work for you.

You have just the drop in K&N Air Filter? Because I just bought the K&N Drop-In Air Filter (Part# 33-2284) and want to make sure its ok to put into my engine. You had a gain? Really?

No I have to rip the whole filter housing and wiring out, the sensors have to be transfered across to the typhoon unit, near shat myself when i opened up the K@N box and saw the size of the filter...its huge!!!, once i get the problems with my steering and dealer sorted out I will give it a go cos im not sure what it would do to my waranty if the dealer saw it fitted.

So are there any opinions on the drop-in K&N filter for the RX-8? Everyone I talk to who has a K&N filter, regardless of the type of vehicle, says they are great. I just don't want to mess with it if it is going to be a waste of money or do any damage.

K&N Typhoon systems is a good design and can work, but K&N put the wrong air filter on it.

S&B makes a 7" long cone filter with a 3 1/2 flange ID that can replace the current bubble filter(as I call it) and will let the RX-8 induction breath as it was designed too, from the front and also benefit from the rest of the induction design.

A lot of you forget, not all 8's have the same enrichment. Some run lean and don't benefit from any induction changes and a lot run rich to very rich(like mine)and will benefit from getting more air flow. So, results or pain really depend on your cars setting; lean-na rich-ya!!!!

K&N tested their Typhoon system orignally on a J flashing(ya J flashing) which was very rich and got good results. Since then, we have K, L, M, M-a b c d e etc. and even a N which will change enrichment and timing as well as Mazda's sensors are not consistent car to car. So, some of you maybe luckier than others on performance and gas mileage due to these little quricks!!!!!

Why do you keep posting this exact same response over and over again in every single K&N thread? We get it already.

Yeah, really. Mike Z, give it a rest.

After all, K&N IS a forum vendor....
