Any thoughts....I don't really care about numbers.....but I saw this and wondered how accurate it could be..

I'd call it sorta-accurate. It uses accelerometers to measure g-forces on two axis and then calculates everything from there. The "problem" is in that calculation--cheaper accelerometers are not as accurate and any calculations done from there magnify the error. Better than a butt-dyno, not as good as most data loggers.

The newer gtech, if I remember correctly will read the rpms on the rotary. Makes the graphs useful. It also lists for $200.

Hmmm, an older GTech. It's better than nothing or the old "butt-dyno" so I'd say go for it.

I don't have any experience with the G-Tech, but I just can't imagine it being very accurate at all. Maybe I just fail to grasp the physics behind it.

Actually, these old GTechs are amazingly accurate - still not as accurate as a three-axis accelerometer combined with an optical 5th wheel (which is how the car mags measure performance) but much more accurate than you will be looking at the speedo and clicking a stopwatch.

These are great for casual performance testing. I bought one of those in 1994 and still have it. I use 0-60, 1/4 mile, and 60-0 braking to test new parts, etc.

Most comparision tests that I have seen show the accuracy to be pretty good. But the main thing is that they seem consistant. That is what you need if you are comparing different set ups on the same car.

It is definitely worth the $35 just for the fun factor.

I bought one made by Escort (the people that make the Passport radar detector) for $200. I didn't use it much, but it was fun to play with. I will have to try it out more when the weather gets better.

That's where I got mine (via their eBay auctions)- was about $35 shipped. It's a neat gadget- the true power of it is in measuring the effects of changes/mods... I played around with intake modifications, and G-tech validated my butt-dyno findings with actual numbers (both 0-60 and HP ratings). While the numbers might not be perfectly accurate, they give you a good baseline for calculating performance deltas.

I have no plans to do any mods or anything to my car. I just love the "gadget" nature of this thing for the fun of it.
