I've read that the RX8 is a little thirsty. My present 4 dr sedan uses 10.5-11L/100km. Has anyone figured out what the RX8 gets?

My 8 uses 11.8 l/100km. I tracked it since I bought the car and have put 12k km on it with that average in 50% city driving and pretty aggressive usage, including some track lapping.

On average, with my daily driving, I get something around 17L/100km.

I only broke 12L/100km once, and that was on an extended highway trip in 6th gear on cruise control the whole way.

On track, I didn't do the math, but I showed up with a full tank, and at 150km the car was sputtering from low gas and I had to limp around the rest of that lap.


*Edit: I should have mentioned that my odomoter is a little over 21,000km.
It's a victory when I see 300km out of a tank.
This was about the same with and without the CZ Stage 1 computer, as I found that made no statistical difference.
Always using Esso 91 Octane (91 is the highest you can get on the East coast.)

Mine has averaged 15.9l/100K over almost 21K Km

yep, premium gas it is...

It uses gas like an SUV... ehehe..

I blam it to my heavy right foot....

At first I used premium gas but have since switched to Regular. My gas mileage has increased significantly (However the engine is now more broken in as well). Current ODO reading 4,000 k....

I've been told that if you use Regular Fuel and your engine doesn't knock or ping, it's better for your engine that premium.... but then again I don't know a whole lot about cars.

My milage is using premium gas, 91 and 89 octane. I saw no real (ie statistical) difference with either but have never tried regular.

I've been running Sunoco 94 since I picked mine up and can get about 400 KM's per tank with granny driving or 360 KM's with fun driving. I don't know much about gas but I once put Esso 91 and drove granny to 365 KM's. The last tank I put in I tried Shell 91 (Since Shamblerock mentioned he used it and can do 150km/hr in 3rd gear with it) and it looks to be getting better gas mileage, not sure what I'll hit but should know by end of day tomorrow. These are all to when the light comes on.

I get 425-450KM per tank before the light comes on. 5K Kms all on Winter Toyo Garit HT 17"s.

I seem to remember awhile back some Yankees were talking about the "magic mileage point" where the engine and/or ECU seemed to loosen up. I seem to remember either 1000miles or 3000miles. Anybody remember? I'm thinking it's more of mechanical thing where the engine has been nicely broken in, thus less resistance.

People keep saying that, but, if anything, my mileage has gotten worse as the miles have gone on.

16000km on my car. I average about 350km-400km/tank half city, half highway. I did a trip and got 450km on a full tank. I have used 91 octane twice. I only fill up with Sunoco 94. I have NEVER used regular.. It's a sports car, it deserves good gas :)

and it does get better as the km's go on, first few thousand k I barely broke 300km..

I drive pretty agressive as well (normal shifts just below 5k, and I go crazy at least once a day :) But i've put it to sleep for the winter, just drive around my block once a week now :( can't wait for the spring. . . . sigh

My 8 with 3500km is averaging ~14.8 L/100km with 80% city and 20% highway. Best mileage was 13.4 L/100km (mostly highway) and my worst has been 16.2 L/100km (stop and go). Usually warm the engine for 3-4 min when cold. How high does everyones engine rev when first started when cold? Mine runs around 1800rpm and does not drop to 1100-1200rpm till its been warmed up for 2-3 min.

Mine just passed 5,000km. I had the best granny run from Toronto to Niagara Fall and back on cruise control @ 120km/hr. Did only 14.3L/100km. A lot worse all the time with 50/50 highway/city driving. Usually drive calm but always redline(9k rpm) at least once a day. 60km+/hr in 1st, 90km+/hr in 2nd when redline. I think someone did 3rd to 150km/hr. Nice adrenaline rush for a couple of seconds. Cold start idle is just below 2k rpm. I just drive slowly in the 1st few minutes to let the engine warm up. I always use 91/92/94 octane gas.

I track gas mileage by:

1. Record the tripdometer reading then reset to 0 at the gas station
2. Fill up full tank and record the gas filled
3. Calculate the mileage based on readings from 1 & 2
4. Repeat 1-3 each time before you fill up

This works quite well and you don't have to wait until the tank is empty. Oh the very 1st time you don't have to record any readings 'cause the numbers don't make sense. You start calculating at your 2nd fill up.

ok guys, i have 37000 kms on my 8, got it august 4th 2003. Gaz mileage has been bad from day one but not to a point where i think there's anything wrong. On my normal commute get about 400km per 50L so about 12.5 l per 100 K. If i'm on the HW at 120kph for long it's close to 500K but i did this once only... Anyone noticed how bad the mileages gets when it's cold outside? It drops sharply when november comes and no, i don't idle it for 5 minutes, start up, buckle up and go.

I'm missing it so much... been under the car cover in the garage for 6 weeks now... :-(

It's interesting how different octane fuel or even different fuel from different gas stations affects how the gas it used on the 8. Let's see if I can explain this without confusing everyone. With the same driving style on all these fillups here is the breakdown of km's per quarter tank I get, roughly:

Sunoco 94 Octane:

First Quarter: 75Kms
Half Tank: 190Kms
3/4 Tank: 300Kms
At Yellow: 370Kms

Esso 91 Octane:

First Quarter: 120Kms
Half Tank: 200Kms
3/4 Tank: 320Kms
At Yellow: 380Kms

Shell 91 Octane:

First Quarter: 100Kms
Half Tank: 200kms
3/4 Tank: 310Kms
At Yellow: 360Kms

Petro Canada 91 Octane:

First Quarter: 100Kms
Half Tank: 230Kms
3/4 Tank: 320Kms
At Yellow: Not there yet, First time using Petro Canada

This is the same driving style which is normal pickups to 4K RPM and a number of pulls between 6-8000RPM. I've repeated the Esso numbers 3 times and the Sunoco numbers 4 times within a few km's at those points. After my Petro tank is done I'm going to try Sunoco 91.

Anyone else see these differences? Who's the octane expert that can shed some light on what's going on.

I'm getting around 340-380KM per tank. Now that its winter, it seems to be a bit worse. I'm usually 13-13.5Litres per 100 KM. So far this winter with much less highway driving I'm about 15 litres per 100 KM.

i get about 340 km per tank with one or two highway trips included. most of the time it's short 5-10 km trips in my car (to work/school) so i guess i'm lucky.

Had my best mileage yet. 13.7 L/100km. All city driving. Have been using nothing but Turbo 91 octane so far. Now at about 3000 km on the 8.

I went to mazda dealership to ask about prices and did a testdrive.. the salesperson said that the 8 can be filled up with 87 octane gas.. i know it's better if u fill it with higher octane gas.. but anyone tried 87 before?

I think a lot of fellows (including myself) have tried 87 octane before. In fact I think that 87 gets better mileage. I don't know the physics behind that but do a search and I'm sure lots of explainations will come up.

I've tried 87 and it runs fine. Just don't expect as good performance (or something).

I only run high test fuel..........I want performance over gas mileage.

The only performance decrease you see in using 87 octane is if the engine starts pinging.

Generally in winter, it's okay to use a lower octane rating because of the colder temperatures. In the summer, you want to prevent pinging with a higher octane fuel.

I have had my GT Standard for about a month now driving under 4k rpm with 80% city. I have filled it up twice with octane 92 chevron and I'm only getting about 300km per 50 L. The total mileage on the car is only around 800km.
Hopefully it'll improve later as the mileage increases, I'd be happy with 350.
