View Full Version : This Guy is crazy!!!
Skinny 11-16-2004, 05:33 PM This really bothers me but it is something I have to do! I went to a dealership today to trade my 04 lightning yellow RX8, GT package, rear wing. The guy totally insulted me by only offering me 21K for a car that only has 740 miles on it. yes that is what I said 740 miles. I need a truck. What do you guys think a fair price would be? I told him to **** himself because there is no way, my car has lost $11,000 of value in less than a year. I would like to sell it to someone that would appreciate it but i dont know what to ask for it. Please be fair! I really wanted to smack this guy! Thanks for all the help.
Murray16 11-16-2004, 05:44 PM Hey... they gotta try to make money off of the trade. A private sale would be the way to go for a basically brand new car.
RotaryNoob 11-16-2004, 05:46 PM From Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com
Private Party Value : $26,745
Trade-In Value : $23,175
Thats in my zip code. Check your own yourself. Also check www.autotrader.com and see what similar cars are selling for. Don't be so damn lazy.
mysql101 11-16-2004, 05:55 PM I would suggest finding out what a brand new 2004 can be bought for, then taking 1-2 thousand off that price to get a decent number to work with.
I've heard people are able to get a 2004 for 3,000 under dealer invoice... but not everyone is aware of that, and your car is basically brand new. I'd suggest trying to sell it locally for 2k under dealer invoice as a starting point.
rx8wannahave 11-16-2004, 05:59 PM Yeah, I think you would probably be able to get $24,000 for it...just my opinion, maybe $26,000 to someone that loves the car and aint to bright...LOL
GOOD LUCK!
G8rboy 11-16-2004, 06:05 PM You're not going to get anywhere near the value for your car at a dealer... it just won't happen. You also have a few other things going against you too, unfortunately. There are still '04's at dealer lots that are being blown out way below invoice, and yellow is a color dealers might shy away from (being hard to sell). I think the yellow RX8 is awesome... so don't take that personally. With such low miles, you should be able to sell it to private buyer for at least $25k if it's still in new condition. I wish I had room for another : ).
Good luck...

Dammmmnnnnnn!
I got $22500 for my silver AT W/ sport pkg with 9100 miles on it. I'd walk away from that dealer!
quack_p 11-16-2004, 06:17 PM After 740 miles, you realized you need a truck? Can I just say: "D'OH!" While you're slapping the dealer in the face, slap yourself, too! ;)
downshift 11-16-2004, 07:01 PM If you could wait, sell the yellow RX-8 next Spring. By that time, all the 04's would be sold out and the yellow RX-8 should become more valuable since they no longer come with that color on the 05's.

Yeah but did you buy your new car at invoice?
Dealers are commonly selling RX8 GT's for $1000 below invoice, so $27,620 plus there are some incentives out there. Figuring you could buy a brand new one for $27,000 $25,000 would be a fair price to sell it on their lot, and it probably wouldn't even move that quickly. Sorry but if the car is registered in your name, its not new anymore even if it only has 720 miles so that hurts the value a bit. So you are mad they are trying to buy your car low enough that they can sell it to make $3-$4,000 profit? Keep fighting the good fight their buddy! Maybe if they rip you a new one on the car you buy (make $5000 profit on it) they will give you $23,000 for your trade to make you happy.
jsh1120 11-16-2004, 07:54 PM I'm shocked, truly shocked that an auto dealer would attempt to profit from someone who purchased an RX-8 when he really needed a truck. Considering that dealers' prime responsibility is to make up for customers' mistakes in their purchases, I don't blame you for feeling badly treated. Considering that new 2004 RX-8's with the GT package routinely sell for $27K (in the Pacific Northwest, at least), I'd think he would have offered you at least what you paid for it and absorb the loss.
As others have noted, find out what a new 2004 is selling for in your area, subtract a few thousand to make it worthwhile to deal with you rather than a dealer and sell the car. Next time, don't mistake a sports car for a truck.

More like $3,000 below invoice right now. kbb.com says trade-in value is $23,275, private party value is $26,860. Hmmm, kbb.com obviously isn't aware that you have a good chance of getting this car new for $26,000.
Here's what I'd do -- I'd advertise the car at $27,360 OBO, come down to $26,860 and tell the buyer this is Blue Book value, and be ready to come down to $25,000 if you can't afford to wait. There's no way I'd pay more than $25,000 but I probably know a little more about the pricing than the average buyer (thanks to the RX-8 Club!).
StewC625 11-16-2004, 08:44 PM A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. He obviously wasn't willing to pay what you wanted. Keep shopping for another buyer.
Skinny 11-16-2004, 11:16 PM Thanks for all the replies! I knew I was gonna take some heat. I bought the car because I think it looks and drives great just like everyone else on here. I just feel that the RX8 is a great car and that it would hold its value alittle better. The sad part is my job is driven by the airline industry. We all know how bad it is (USairways in Pittsburgh) I had originally intended for this to be my summer toy that I could add all the performance accessories, rims and etc.... Now my job is not as secure as it once was. I have had the car for awhile not like I bought it yesterday and today decided I needed a truck, Job is changing, life is changing. I just thought I would ask everyone what they thought I should do. I take it the thing to do is wait until spring. Thanks for all the help

You're such a good sport! People can be nasty around here. Sorry to hear about your job. Don't worry, I'm sure you won't have any problems selling your car for a much better price than what that dealer was offering. Now might be a hard time to sell since the city is getting ready to freeze over and since there's probably still new 04's on the lot.
mysql101 11-17-2004, 12:01 AM soon as they get rid of all the 2004's on the lots, if you keep your car at 700 miles, you'll be the closest thing anyone can get to a brand new rx-8 in yellow :)
your color choice is the best decision you made for the rx-8.

Does your car have the nav system? If so, I'll trade you even-up for my 2003 Tacoma. :D
Rxdriftingaction 11-18-2004, 11:20 AM dude .. milliage doesn't equal condition.!! but I beileve U keep ur car nice..!!! unfortunate..U are not in CA.... my friend looking for a car..!!! and he also want to get a 8..!!! sad....
Skinny 11-19-2004, 12:12 AM Sorry no nav! I bought the car and was working like crazy and didnt have time, plus it has rained almost everyday. Car has been in a heated garage since I got it, seen rain once. I even kept the paper floor mats that the dealer puts in it when I bought it. I looked on autotrader and there must be tons of other people out that dont know, that you can get a left over for so cheap. Lost count of how many are over $29,000 that have close to 10k miles on them if not more. Someone must be paying these prices. I guess I will hold on to it until spring and try to sell it myself.
jsh1120 11-19-2004, 07:38 AM Remember that the prices in AutoTrader are asking prices, not selling prices. In my experience the prices in AutoTrader are about 10%-15% higher than actual selling prices. Call it the "my s**t don't stink" premium that most people apply to their own cars when they're trying to sell them. :)
