View Full Version : Should I get some oil to carry with me from Day 1
kiwimeat 11-11-2004, 04:31 AM Guys,
Do I need to get some spare oil to carry with me from Day 1?
If so, how much should I be getting & how much should I be paying?
Cheers
Yours expectantly
RXE16T 11-11-2004, 04:37 AM 1L Mazda Rotary Oil is about $12.
Get one and keep it in the centre ski hatch.
Gomez 11-11-2004, 05:08 AM No. No need to rush. It took me 5000km before I had to add anything. The dealer topped it up at the free 1500km service, and I think I added 1.5 litres in the next 8500k's. If you go heavy on the loud pedal, you'll have to add oil more often...
Gomez.
Gomez 11-11-2004, 05:10 AM Oh...., and Rotary Oil is about $52/5L at your dealer......if you want to use mineral oil...... :)

Highly recommended to help with running in the motor, might I add. :)
timbo 11-11-2004, 04:28 PM Get a litre, but I found it was a good way to get on the right side of the Service Mgr, to 'pop' in when the oil became a bit low -- he'll usually arrange to top it, gratis. And remember, they won't change your oil/filter at the 1000k service unless you ask (and probably pay).
It's good to get into the habit of checking the oil regularly so even though you mightn't burn much initially while breaking in... if it were me, I'd grab a litre.
kiwimeat 11-11-2004, 05:50 PM Thanks for the advice guys.
Waiting...waiting...
..some problem with transferring my personalised plates over from the SP20 to the RX8.....Damn QLD Transport computer.

I bought some oil to keep in the shed but, like Gomez, I haven't found it necessary to carry it with me. An occasional top up has been all that's needed in its first year.
When I first had the car I'd keep it topped up right to the full mark on the stick. Just one of those things you do when a car's new and you take any excuse to keep opening the bonnet and fiddling with it! :D
But now I mostly run it a little bit below that. If you overfill it you can apparently end up blowing the surplus oil through the motor anyway, which is not a good idea. And there's a fair distance on the stick between low and completely full.
I'm not sure whether they inject more oil during the first few thousand ks, (or if running it a bit below full makes a difference??) but I don't seem to put as much oil in now as I did in the first few months. Perhaps that's just an illusion though - it didn't add up to a huge amount anyway.
BlahRX8 11-11-2004, 08:42 PM No top up for 5,000 KMs - lucky you Gomez - i have just hit 5,000 KM and have had to top it up probably every 3 weeks - not alot but still - must be driving too hard!!!!!!!!!!!!
takahashi 11-11-2004, 08:55 PM Don't really need to carry it unless you go on trip. Keep one in your garage though.
I put one in the boot just in case... coz I check oil sometimes in the petrol stations.
RXE16T 11-11-2004, 11:48 PM You guys that haven't needed to regularly top up your oil are not driving the car the way God intended you to! :)
Gibbo 11-14-2004, 02:30 PM I would definately carry it. I needed a top up after 3000km, this was with the 1000km service. I always carry one litre in the ski hatch, besides you never know when some other 8 owner who has forgotten theirs will need yours. :)
