View Full Version : Looks like a viper... Smells like an 8

I kept seeing people say that otherswere mistaking the 8 for a Viper and I couldn't believe that people actually did that. I've only had it mistaken for a Miata since it is a Mazda of course. Anyway, it happened to me today. I was pumping gas and a guy yelled across from another pump, "What is that!?". I told him it was a RX-8... Mazda RX-8. He said he thought it was some type of Viper. Then we went on to go through the checklist of typical questions.

Is it manual? Yes.
It's fast, huh? Ya.
Hmm, Is it a 5 speed? No it's 6. :D
Hmm, Whats the top speed? Somewhere Around 150. :D
Hmm, Is it a V6 or a V8? Rotary. :D

Then he got confused and said, "Oh I see, Well its nice," and then he walked back to his car.

I don't know about you guys, but it scares the crap out of me sometimes when people come up and start walking around the car. It makes me nervous because I think they are going to do something. Lots of robberies around here. How many other people have gotten the Viper comment? Just curious.

YAH i was really confuzed why it would be mistaken for a viper...my cousin always tells me that it looks like a viper...crazy kids  at least its better than mistaking it for an S2000

I mean you might mistaken a Corvette for a Viper, but an Rx8?

Someone pass the pipe so I can see things just as clear. :D

When I saw the new Corvette commercials, I thought it was an 8 sinc they changes the headlights. I felt dumb.

the new vette looks more like a ferrari from the front because of the headlights...thats just my opinion

AAAACCCccctually, I think if you stand directly in front of the Rx-8 and sit on one knee, it kinda does look like a viper....

If there were more Vipers on the road there would be no confusion. It's people that don't know jack about cars that are confusing it with a Viper, hence the V6, V8 comments. The 8 looks great, the Viper looks great, but it's pretty damn tough to confuse them if you've ever spent any time looking at or listening to either car.

Someone told me that the 8 looks like an Opel Speedster or GT. Whatever Opels new sportscar is. It is similar, but I don't buy the fact that Mazda copied the Opel.

After getting a ride last weekend in an 800 horsepower supercharged Viper, I have to say it didn't FEEL like my RX-8 either.

FWIW, I did get the "Check out that Viper" comment about my FD once.

I agree, how do you see a Viper in an 8? Well...I guess they both have headlights, a hood, a windshield...LOL...some people are just car blind that's all.

Ahh, the VIPER...my first love...my reason for becomming a car guy...how sweet that baby is! I wish they did make a baby Viper...I would be first in line. (If it came as a 2+2...heck, I take that back...I'd probably would not care)

How about a baby viper lke this:

Dodge Venom
3.5L V-10 350HP
3000 Pounds
RWD

I had a decent conversation the other day at the gas pump with a guy in a Miata. His looked pretty nice. It does make me a bit nervous though when someone gets too close and wants to look inside.

People still regularly want to look and talk about the car, my sister made the viper comment first time she saw it, at quick glance the corvette looks similar from the front because of the lights.

Whereas with the 8 you couldn't picture all the young girlfriends in the one photo since it wouldn't be politically correct. ;)

I had a guy at a stop light yell over to me asking if my 8 was a viper. Ah, the stupid rednecks that I get to interact with in south Georgia. I've also had the engine question.

moron: What kind of engine does that have?

me: It's got a rotary.

moron: Is that a 6 or 8 cylinder

Me: It's a rotary

moron: Oh, ok (looks all confused)

me: (laughing on the inside)

Same story, but the guy refused to believe me. It started off the same, then....

moron: No, I heard about this car. It has an 8 cyl. engine.

me: I own the car. It has no cyl.

moron: Is it fast?

me: Yeah, it's pretty quick

moron: then it's an 8 cyl. (walking around the back of the car) You see right here on the back, it says rx "8". I knew it was an 8 cyl.

me (after a futile attempt to make a rotor with my hands): Maybe your right, I don't know much about cars. I guess the salesman lied to me. :D

Gosh people...a little harsh, you do know that not EVERYONE knows alot about cars nor do they know about the rotary engine. Relax, and feel special that they took interest...give the guy or people a break.

you'd be surprised the weird things people say when they see something new. I've been asked if it was an electric car because of the sound of the engine, another guy was a little to happy to see it and asked me if it was a v10 engine and my friend next to me quickly replied if it was a v10 I wouldn't have spanked him in my sti. I've come to realize that most people will just say the frist thing that comes to their mind when they don't have a clue about something.

I don't think the 8 looks anything like a Viper. Oh and thank god it doesn't handle like a viper. This shop owner I know has one. Yeah it has balls. In fact maybe too much balls. This being the case they don't handle all that well.

Nice thread res!

I wonder if anyone still gets this, I sure haven't. I could see how people got it back in the day when the car was still new and non-car people hadn't seen many of them yet. One thing on the 8 DOES look like the Viper, the roof sort of has the double bouble look like the Viper.

Dodge Venom
3.5L V-10 350HP

A V-10 that only puts out 350HP??? Were engines really so crappy back in 2004 that this would sound like a good idea?

Seriously...why do newbies bring up ancient threads?

I have to agree that there is a slight resemblance from the front of an RX-8 only with the Mazdaspeed bumper to a Viper. At least from afar. Lol.

A couple years ago I went over to Midas with my roomie cause he needed some brakes. Roomie had a Saab 9-3 and I had the 8. The Midas shop owner guy seemed a little jerky and a little uninformed.

Us: Can we get some brakes for the Saab?
Midas: Oh no. Those are special order parts, we don't carry any foreign car parts, can't even work on em' we don't have the right tools.

Us: Oh. (We'll that doesn't sound right but whatever)

Midas: (Guy notices I've got an 8 parked outside, gives me a smirky look)
You know that things a rotary right?

Us: Yeah.
Midas: You know they've revving them up to 14k rpm in Europe? Look it up.

i think the reason people say this is because of the way the top of the car is concave. when i first saw my rx8 from the front thats one of the first things i thought. how the roof kinda dips in the middle.. i dont know could be just me. and i will say thats about the only resemblence i see. i could never "mistake" an rx8 for a viper haha
