View Full Version : Expensive insurance
I checked with my insurance carrier before I bought my 8 so I was well aware that the coverage was going to be relatively high. Although it's about $400.00 a year cheaper than a Mustang, it's still double what my '02 Ford Exploder costs. Both my wife and I have perfect driving records, yet this high cost. My carrier classifies the 8 (and the Mustang) as "unexceptable risks" and classifies both has "high performance" vehicles. I can't argue with the "high performance" classification, but when they said they would make an "exception" because of my excellent driving record I thought, "oh gee, thanks" (sarcasm). My carrier doesn't seem to care that the 8 has 4 doors, 4 seats, lots of airbags and a very good crash safety rating. I've read elsewhere on this forum that some owners believe that having 4 doors and 4 seats lowers the insurance rate. If this is true, it must not be much (???)

I go through State Farm and pay $80 a month.
State Farm doesnt classify the 8 as a sports car, where as I know Allstate does. Allstate wanted $140 for premiums.
Shop around.
Oh, and theres been a ton of threads on this, search around and you'll find alot more info.
Tayninh 10-22-2004, 10:42 AM Sounds like a bad insurance company. I was in an 04 Pontiac Grand AM and I too checked the insurance costs and it only went up about $7 a month because the car is worth more. I would get on line and get insurance quotes. Sounds like they are ripping you off. I don't consider and RX a high performance car or even a race car and its not a Mustang. Mustangs and GTOs can be high HP off the line cars and have that reputation. I think someone at your insurance company just took you.
DreRX8 10-22-2004, 10:45 AM yeah--you got raped man--my insurance is less on the RX8 than on my Millenia S--and I'm a 22 yr old male.
Luftwaffle 10-22-2004, 10:47 AM I got quoted for $4,915 a year from Liberty Mutual here in NYC... $8200 from Progressive... this is all for comprehensive insurance... What exactly constitutes "expensive" for you?
I go through State Farm and pay $80 a month.
You have my undying hatred and envy. :p
reddragonmd 10-22-2004, 10:48 AM i go through state farm and pay 280/month
But i also have 4 points on my record until march of 05
goforwand 10-22-2004, 10:50 AM I got quoted for $4,915 a year from Liberty Mutual here in NYC... $8200 from Progressive...
OMG!
I pay ~$700 a year.......that is painful to even READ!
NomisR 10-22-2004, 10:54 AM Depends on y our insurance company, I was getting quotes and with state farm, the Rx8's insurance is less than a TSX, RSX, TL, G35/C, 350Z, Mustang, and a whole lot of other cars.
skuzbucket 10-22-2004, 10:59 AM I pay 2100 Year - FOR 3 CARS!!!!!
2001 Grand Cherokee
2003 MP5
2004 RX-8
$4200/yr is Horrendous even with a not so clean record...
As for 280/Mo from State Farm - they suck all the money they can out of you - I would shop around...
Farmers Insurance. That is the way to go... Awesome coverage and claims handling. You even get a phone number for a REAL person... Go figure...
Feras 10-22-2004, 11:06 AM As for 280/Mo from State Farm - they suck all the money they can out of you - I would shop around...
uh state farm rules i pay 107.83 a month (1293 a year) in philadelphia and im a 23 year old male. ive been in not at fault accidents as well...when i went online and put in all my info they and other companies were quoting me 2400 3600 and such a year. I talked to a local state farm agent and we went over my record and stuff and my family (who uses state farm) and he was able to cut my expected premium in half. They love their customers.

Tayninh 10-22-2004, 11:14 AM NY? man that gives me a headache seeing those insur rates!! all is high there including property taxes. Makes me wonder why I would ever want to live there. Feel for those folks who pay that sort of insurance costs.
bgreene 10-22-2004, 11:16 AM Hey 1.3L,
In CA, you might want to try Mercury. When I got the quote before buying my 8, it came in at $10/month less than the same coverage for a 4x4 Tacoma. I just paid a little over $500 for 6 months of full coverage in OC (15 years driving, clean record, and discount for being an engineer).
Luftwaffle 10-22-2004, 11:19 AM 69.00 per month State Farm-- 500,000 300,000, 100,000 (100.00 deductible)

Do you want to see me cry or something? :(
Luftwaffle 10-22-2004, 11:25 AM Hey 1.3L,
In CA, you might want to try Mercury. When I got the quote before buying my 8, it came in at $10/month less than the same coverage for a 4x4 Tacoma. I just paid a little over $500 for 6 months of full coverage in OC (15 years driving, clean record, and discount for being an engineer).
Damn, you can get a discount for being an engineer? I'm an engineer, but no one will hire me AS an engineer. They just want me for my math skills... Lousy city job...
menace1227 10-22-2004, 11:25 AM Dude,
I have mine at Farmer's at $65 a month. Better shop around. Good luck!
MELRX8 10-22-2004, 11:41 AM Mine went down $5.00 a month compared to my Nissan Altima 2.5SL (State Farm)
r8ped8 10-22-2004, 11:43 AM Do you want to see me cry or something? :(
lol but crying on the inside :p
Razz1 10-22-2004, 12:01 PM 1300 per year is about right for a 23 yr old.
I only pay 500 a year. Full coverage and ten times higher coverage for liability.
It was cheaper than my V6 GT Eclispe!
bgreene 10-22-2004, 01:39 PM Damn, you can get a discount for being an engineer? I'm an engineer, but no one will hire me AS an engineer. They just want me for my math skills... Lousy city job...
Some companies will do a discount for just having a degree in engineering.
Also, don't get too upset over r8ped8's premiums. Keep in mind that Spokane, WA is a city of (maybe) 200-250,000 people, and the next significant cities are Seattle (300 miles away), Portland (350-400 miles away) and Salt Lake City (500-600 miles away). You'll generally find heavier traffic at 10:30 PM in L.A. or NYC than at "rush hour" where r8ped8 lives.
I went to High School in Missoula, MT (population ~70k, 2nd or 3rd biggest town in the state), and had premiums of probably <$50/month at 16 years old. (and we used to drive to Spokanne to see the city....)
mysql101 10-22-2004, 01:42 PM The RX-8 with 150k/300k full coverage, uninsured motorist, PIP and everything else you can think of costs $500/6months with Amex insurance.
To give you an idea about my other cars, the RX-8 with full coverage costs LESS than my mustang convertable with only liability.
The RX-8 costs slightly less (~$50) than the same coverage on a 2000 Saturn.
quack_p 10-22-2004, 02:19 PM I got quoted for $4,915 a year from Liberty Mutual here in NYC... $8200 from Progressive... this is all for comprehensive insurance...
D'OH!
I thought my $1,400 per year for two cars was bad.
Luftwaffle 10-22-2004, 02:47 PM Being 22, male, single, living in NYC and not working as an engineer sucks. Reading this thread makes me want to cry. On the plus side, GEICO quoted me at 2700 for some pretty decent, though not maxed out, comprehensive insurance. I think I'll take that, I have no other choice. :p
WildOne 10-22-2004, 03:15 PM Try GE Auto Insurance Program (1-800-523-1700) I pay $467.50 a YEAR for full coverage. They do not consider the 8 a sports car. That suits me just fine. I was paying $26.00 more a year for my 1989 Corolla SR5. My deductible for collision is $250. and for comprehensive it is $100.00.
aggietiff28 10-22-2004, 03:25 PM $85 a month with State Farm, although when I asked them, they do classify it as a sports car here. The also got very confused about the rotary engine thing, kept asking if it was a 4 cylinder, I told her if she had to put that in the computer and it made my insurance go down...sure. She said, nope...it actually made the insurance go up if it was listed as a 4 cylinder.
irish8 10-23-2004, 05:49 PM Being 22, male, single, living in NYC and not working as an engineer sucks. Reading this thread makes me want to cry. Luftwaffle...time to move!! :D I'm paying $80 per mo through Allstate. And trust me, my driving record is not clean!!

FYI - insurance is based on where you live. So listening to people chime in about WA, NYC, FL, OH, etc. is completely IRRELEVANT to you.
On the other hand, bgreene's recommendation for CA is the place to call. AND check Mercury different agents because I got cheaper quotes from different agents = $350 w/ ZERO difference in coverage. One place had more employees = more overhead = more $.
I called everyone (geico, allstate, state farm, AAA, AIG, century 21, etc....) and Mercury was the cheapest w/ the same statutory requirements.
And like bgreene, i also get 'affliated' discounts. ask mercury about them w/ regard to your profession.
GT-rex 02-27-2006, 02:34 PM Hey 1.3L,
In CA, you might want to try Mercury. When I got the quote before buying my 8, it came in at $10/month less than the same coverage for a 4x4 Tacoma. I just paid a little over $500 for 6 months of full coverage in OC (15 years driving, clean record, and discount for being an engineer).
Mercury didn't seem to be much cheaper than anyone else when I got an online quote. I still wish I lived in the Carlsbad area (where 21st Century was still screwing me with $1900/yr), but now that I'm back in Los Angeles, they're raping me to the tune of $3900/yr. That's with a totally clean record (good driver's discount) and my engineering degree discount. I'm definitely looking to switch and it's encouraging to hear about State Farm not considering the 8 a "high performance sports car" like other carriers. I thought the 4-door aspect would have been a bonus. Although when I was car shopping, my biggest surprise was that an S2000 is still 50%-75% more than an RX-8. :Eyecrazy: Even the 350Z and BMW Z4 3.0 are cheaper to insure than an RX-8.
A friend can insure his '04 E500, '01 Boxster, and '02 4-Runner ALL for 30% less than my 8 alone, but he lives close to OC rather than L.A. proper.
jaguargod 02-27-2006, 03:00 PM I went from a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac to the 04 RX-8,and my premiums went down slightly. And the RX-8 was worth more than the Ford, so it wasn't due to value. I think I pay somewhere in the $60-$70/month area.
jefferrari 02-27-2006, 03:08 PM I had a friend lived in NY and registered the car and the insurance in MI when his gf went there...
my insurance went down from Perlude to 8
djseto 02-27-2006, 03:17 PM $2200 a year
State Farm
multi-line discount
100,000/300,000
$200 comp. deductible
$1000 collision deductible
80%/$500 max rental coverage
Road Side Assist.
I am 24 yr old male living in Atlanta (not outside, but in the city). That rate includes $180 surcharge for a BS motorcycle claim I had two years ago. I am in the process of fighting it, but by the time it reaches a trial in Massachusetts (where I was previously licenced), it will have dropped off my record and I'll be 25. I can't wait to turn 25 in a few months. Any idea how much it actually drops?
Khidr 03-06-2006, 11:51 AM Hey Djseto, just played the insurance game today... insurance drops a lot when you hit 25 (I'm 26)
my premium on my old car went from 180 and change a month to 144.00 on renewal.
I'll point out that State Farm has great rates ONLY if your record is immaculate, I had a theft in 03 and a "discretionary" speeding ticket around the same time, and they were giving me a quote around there, somewhere in the 220.00 a month range, but... State Farm also hates our car... a lot more than other cars. Geico on the other hand who will be my new carrier... 155.00 a month for similar coverage to what you're looking for.
Just my recent experiences.
Being in the city is going to hurt, a bit though, when I was in Philly it was stupidly high, then again, my car got tagged while I was there, so I guess they were right.
l8r.
licid222 03-06-2006, 04:25 PM I got 100/300 with a 1k deductible and pay 233/month through Progressive (the 1k deductible got it down from up at $255/month). Shopped at a StateFarm rep and they were like "holy crap!, $233/month", then they ran my stuff and quoted me $280/month.
I have one of my tickets falling off my record in May so then it'll be time to shop around again, but I'll still have two tickets on the record until Oct 2007 or so.
Keep in mind credit plays a nice part too. I was stupid when I was younger and got a credit slap for it so I'll be in the "bad credit" area for another couple years as well.
Most people wait till they turn 25 for insurance to drop. Me.... I have to wait for all the stupid stuff I did before I was 25 to drop off my record.
Then again I didn't get the 8 to save money....
born2drive 03-06-2006, 06:12 PM All you State Farm lovers may want to read this. I had State Farm about 6 months ago and had an accident. I totaled a Mustang in a single car accident and they had to shell out $14,000. They then brought up an old ticket I received like 4 years ago, paired it with the accident and canceled me. I have carried State Farm since I was in highschool! They even told me when I signed on that the first accident was forgiven! What a load of crap! They do offer cheap insurance, but as soon as you are unfortunate enough to have an accident they drop you.
chrism 03-06-2006, 06:25 PM i have geico in jersey (which is the highest insurance state in the union) and i pay 2040 a year for 3 cars, my 8, my 94 626 beater and my wifes 05 rav4 limited.....before geico got here it was more than double what im paying now.....i have a perfect record but my wife has 2 accidents and a speeding ticket....but i definately recommend them if you can get them
nycgps 03-07-2006, 10:18 AM Take me as example.
I got my car at June 2005, and at that time my licenses was about 1 and 1/2 year. No Accidents no ticket what so ever
Insurace used to cost : (NO Defesive Driver Course yet, 50K/100K full coverage, 500 deduct, before I 25 years old)
Geico : 2100 for 1/2 Year
Progressive : 2600 for 1/2 year
Allstate : 4000 for 1/2 year
StateFarm : Said they have no agent in NYC back then.
CountryWide : They dont accept "sports" car (pussy)
Now : as of today (With Defensive Driver course taken, same coverage, im 25 yrs old now, still no traffic ticket on my record, but I just got one from some donut eating cop few days ago, I stopped at the stop sign but he said I fuxking didnt, I cant agure right? but Im going to fight for that, Im not going to accept something I didnt do.)
Geico : 1659.80 for 1/2 year
Progressive : 1400 for 1/2 year
AllState 1800 for 1/2 year
didnt quote StateFarm and Country wide.
and yes Im in New York city. Where the gayest driver around, but they never get tickets ! instead, cops will only pick on good drivers like me, just because I have a "unqiue car"
Tigster 03-07-2006, 10:22 AM I pay about 2300 a year for the 8 and the Infiniti FX35. I use a company called Amica Mutual that is a bit more expensive, but the service is second to none and they are rated as one of the best companies around by almost all reviews.
And incase anyone cares.
I carry 300/500 stacked on the cars.
100% pip
$500 deductible
We carry lots of insurance to be properly protected.
HolyCross05 03-07-2006, 10:39 AM I have fireman's insurance and I pay about $1100 a year for full coverage. I'm 23, 1 minor accident in a parking lot, no tickets except in Canada - does anyone know if this counts? and I live outside of Boston.
djseto 03-07-2006, 10:48 AM Geico on the other hand who will be my new carrier... 155.00 a month for similar coverage to what you're looking for.
I had Geico and they were like $100 more a month! Where I live in Atlanta is literally is on the border of a good zip code, but is in a "bad" zip code according to Geico, even though my whole area is very nice. State Farm recently did a re-zone and said my area is not the high risk area and therefore they gave me a better rate. Aside from that, I was happy with Geico, but being penalized for having a zip code associated to a bad area when I didnt live anywhere near the high risk areas was crap.
griffe 03-07-2006, 11:01 AM I got State Farm. Had them since '96. I carry 250/500 ded. comp and coll. on my 8. My payments are $95 mo. I'm 35 no accidents or tickets, and living in Louisiana. A state in which people feel like they don't need insurance, and most of 'em don't have it which is why State Farm says....makes your rates go up. I'm very please with my rate with SF.
BunnyGirl 03-10-2006, 12:38 AM I just got my insurance set up today for my car coming next week. It costs roughly $185 a month for full coverage and gap insurance. Deductible $100/$250. I am 25 with a clean driving record. Unfortunately, only had a "real" driver's license since Dec. LOL I wish I would have gotten one sooner. I've been driving since I was 18. :)
