View Full Version : Rusty brakes, fogged taillights, and more...
viggen 10-20-2004, 06:14 PM Love my RX-8. Car continues to generate lots of attention and is obviously fun to drive.
However --
1. My brake hubs are rusting (not the rotors, not the discs) -- I've owned many, many cars, have not seen this previously. Also, only the rears are rusting, the fronts are fine. Per an earlier post, this is clearly a warranty problem
2. Rear taillights leak and have lots of condensation -- will need to get this fixed
3. Headlight covers slightly fogged -- anyone else have this problem?
4. Sunroof rattles when open, creaks when closed -- annoying
4. Bought the car in OC, CA, moved it to NJ a few months ago. Car is getting lots of rattles -- passenger seat vibrates, rattles in the dash and in particular, the IP
I am just now completing year one of ownership -- very concerned about how the car will hold up over the next few years...
Hammer 10-20-2004, 08:03 PM I would definately find the nearest dealer and get all of these fixed under warranty. They all sound like warranty issues to me. How many miles do you have on it? (did you drive it cross country?)
snap-on 10-20-2004, 08:10 PM 2. Rear taillights leak and have lots of condensation -- will need to get this fixed
I think there is a TSB about cracked tailight lenses.
4. Sunroof rattles when open, creaks when closed -- annoying
Have the dealer check for insulation between the dome light and roof.

Three issues here. Have the dealer check the seat mounting bolts. There is a TSB for the dash/air bag rattle. One on the fine members here posted a repair for the IP rattle...dare I say "Brilliant"
Good luck
RotorGeek 10-20-2004, 08:11 PM Both 2 and 3 are TSB's in mazda's system. I had the same problem with my taillights.
markd 10-20-2004, 08:12 PM Wow, I've not had any of those problems. I had the rusty rotors issue, but you said that's not what you have. I'd be concerned about the rattling and the condensation because those are definitely not supposed to happen.

r8ped8 10-20-2004, 10:19 PM thanks snap-on you are a great resource on this site!!
Mugatu 10-21-2004, 06:48 AM I have that creaking problem with my sunroof too. This is the first I heard that someone else had that problem too.
Roaddemon 10-21-2004, 07:22 AM My fogged headlights were replaced under warranty and I hand painted the rusty area around the brake disc with black rustoleum. It looks fine now.
irish8 10-21-2004, 07:56 AM My 8 is an early build date (07/03). I have not experienced any of those issues. I would urge you check that baby into your trusted dealer and have the checklist ready to go. Mazda should address all of those for you.
Good luck.

MrJynx 10-21-2004, 09:33 AM yep creaky sunroof when it opens. rattle in the door when my bose system is up to about 15.. i've learned to "tune" out those issues, but if it's warrenty I will take that up with my dealer! and i have a recent build date April '04

snap-on 10-21-2004, 09:48 AM See if the rattle goes away when you hold up on the dome light.
You need to have the roof open. When it is closed it holds the headliner away from the roof of the car.
2. Rear taillights leak and have lots of condensation -- will need to get this fixed
I had my passenger taillight replaced under warranty already for having condensation. But...the condensation only appeared after I did a 180 into a wall and ripped a chunk off the driver's side of the rear bumper. At least the dealership was nice enough to say, "Hey, the condensation is in the taillight on the opposite side of the car from the damage, so we'll replace it under warranty."
HeelnToe 10-21-2004, 10:27 AM Have the dealer check the seat mounting bolts.
My seat started squeaking badly within a few weeks of purchasing the car. I asked the dealer to loosen all the bolts, then tighten them again.
It worked great... haven't heard a thing for a month+ now ;)

1. I live in the desert (Las Vegas Nevada) and have had my brake replaced by my Mazda dealer for free. I'm no looking into after market brakes.
2. Well my taillights dont "leak", but my trunk will after I wash my car. At first I thought it was my taillights. Oh yea if you dont dry in the trunk good it will rust, not me but someone on here had rust in there.
3. I dont have one. But I did on my 3G. Try WD-40;).
4. Well when you fell ever bump on the road in a sports car you can expect this.
G8rboy 10-21-2004, 10:57 AM My fogged headlights were replaced under warranty and I hand painted the rusty area around the brake disc with black rustoleum. It looks fine now.
I did the same with my hubs a few months after I bought it- I had very little rust, but I wire brushed it and painted with a silver that matched the steel... 7 months later it still looks great. It helped I already had all the wheels off while painting my calipers black though... two birds, one stone :).
Wankeler 10-21-2004, 03:20 PM I've had my left taillight replaced under warranty when I noticed that it had collected some water... now the right side is showing signs of condensation. I also complained about the rattle in my sunroof when open (never noticed any noise while closed though). The dealer said that they lubed and tightened the sunroof tracks and I have not heard the rattle since.
I've never noticed any condensation in the headlamp area though. Bring it in, and make them fix all your problems.
