There are better ways of saying that.

You could simply have asked if anybody had any good experience with dealers in your area. Would probably be more constructive.

I personally wouldn't pay 4500 over MSRP. I don't think those in Hawaaii have much choice from what I hear. Most of us in the continental US do. You can get one from my dealer for MSRP, but most of their unclaimed units are GT packages.

What I suggest you do is write an email or call Mazda.

Hmmm....an 18 year old with obviously a stellar vocabulary walks in to a dealership and they want to charge him $4500 over MSRP...what a shock!!!

Why don't you show your mother how you write in public?

She would not be happy.

Hey...lets not pick on the guy. Just ask him to use more politically correct words and try to be more eloquent.

eclps0, if you feel like they were being dicks, for lack of a better word, discuss the matter in a calm manner or leave and take your business elsewhere.

I'm offended, will someone hold me?

Girls, please!

Although eclps0 didn't put it in the most eloquent manner, he has a genuite gripe and I think the thread can be put back on track...

I've added a sensible title for the thread and "beeped out" the word that some people seem to be offended by... lets try and have a sensible discussion about it...

I hate dealer gouging, but it is elementary economics - supply and demand. How much are you willing to pay, and how patient can you be?

If you're diligent, and fortunate, you should be able to find a dealer that will sell you the car at MSRP. You may not be able to have the very 1st one in town, and you might not get it equipped exactly as you want. Otherwise, you'll probably end up paying more than MSRP.

Check the Mazda Site for other dealers near you. If you can save yourself even $1000-$1500 by travelling to a dealer a few hundred miles away, it's likely worth it. It would be to me. To save $4500 - I would drive cross-country

My virgin ears... Yes s**t is one of the 7 curse words that should not be said in public so in the future I would suggest using "bullcrap" instead. Sure it doesn't have that ring but the meaning is essentially the same and it's legal to say on television and radio.

Actually....... Well said!... Infact I concidered asking people to just chill,.. but it looked like the point of the message was going to be lost and the whole thing degenerate into a flame war, which IMHO is far worse, hopefully we can try to avoid that in future.

I would ask people to be a little tolerant of a one off indiscression... if you feel that somthing needs to be said then lets not ALL pitch in and make a scene... Thanks.

I can top that... I was quoted 39,995 for the touring package, no nav... all I showed that dealer was my backside.

I agree 100% because most of you would have made the exact same comment if you were in that situation. It's only natural.

If you find a dealership selling a Mazda RX-8 (or any other mazda for that matter) above msrp you should report it to Mazda's district rep. Mazda does not just discourage dealerships from doing that, the dealer will get in trouble. Just a note to pass on.

Agreed, just make sure you report them and make sure they don't get business of anybody you know :)

I mentioned to Mazda the prices I was quoted on the RX-8 and all they said was that they cannot dictate pricing by independent dealers...

go figure.

however, maybe the dealers' tune will change once the car is physically here.. but my bet is that it will probably be worse.

Unfortunately, it's just like pricing on the Miata when it came out.

Some dealers will charge $40K for a GT RX-8 if they feel they can get it.

Most sane people would never pay that, but some people do have more money than sense, and they'll pay it.

Add the patience factor, and that dealer will likely have that $40K GT sitting on his lot when an MSRP deal will require a wait of six months or more for your order to come in. Some people can't wait and will pay the premium to have the car now.

Your area also is a determining factor; for example, good luck finding an RX-8 for MSRP if you live in the Bay Area and want to buy from a local dealer.

It sucks, but if you've ever paid for a Coke either at an amusement park or from a hotel minibar, you'll know exactly the factors at work above. :)

(As an example, I just got back from a trip - the same size Coke was 99 cents at the Walgreens down the block, $2 in the hotel gift shop in the lobby, $2.50 in the vending machine on my floor, and $4.50 in the minibar...)
