View Full Version : Best Air intake??
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 02:31 PM Whats the best air intake out there as far as sound and HP? I would like one thats louder than stock and sounds nice but not too loud. Rotary Extreme Cold Air Intake any good? It looks very nice with the aluminum and I like how it has a heat shield to keep the hot air out. They claim 8 to 12 hp gain at the wheels... sounds like a lot to me!
Tayninh 10-18-2004, 02:44 PM You want more sound at the engine intake or out the exhaust? Yeah the HP gain for an intake sounds like a commerical for that intake.
rotarygod 10-18-2004, 02:46 PM Racing Beat. It just isn't out yet. I am not a fan of any others on the market.
i like my Green drop in filter. Like Rotarygod i am not a fan of much else.. if you want sound go with the K&N if you want good flow and no MAF errors then go Green, or RB or even Mazda has a Hiflow drop in now..
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 03:21 PM I want more sound from the Intake. Thew does your Green drop in sound louder and nicer than stock? I hear drop ins don't increase the sound level at all. You've heard the K&N and you say it sounds good? Is that just the drop in or the full typhoon intake system? No one has the Rotary Extreme cold air intake?
liqiud 10-18-2004, 03:31 PM do you have a link for the RE cold air...i haven't seen anyone with a decent cold air system for the 8 yet.
HtownRX8 10-18-2004, 03:34 PM Wait for the Racing Beat intake... Racing Beat has done TONS of research for this product and in my opinion it will the best of the best.
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 06:28 PM When is the RB intake suppose to be due? The Rotary Extreme Intake looks really professional. Check it out. http://www.rotaryextreme.com/rx8intake.html
zoom44 10-18-2004, 06:36 PM couple of months OR MORE for the RB intake.
cwilliams3 10-18-2004, 06:38 PM I have the Rotary Extreme intake, I have very happy with it, it really "wakes up the engine" so you actually can hear it! definitely not overly loud either....as for performance, who knows...too small to feel a difference but I like how it looks and sounds.
xSxxKxxYx 10-18-2004, 06:52 PM umm... seems like no one in here mention anything about the HKS intake...
what do u people think of it... no one likes them??
for some reason... when it comes down to performance tunning...
i usually look into more high end brand... don't know if ok to think this way..
any advices?? any input on what u peeps think about the HKS intake...
XDEEDUBBX 10-18-2004, 06:53 PM i've got the hks racing suction and love it...no problems at all with it...there was an "average" of 3 hp made with the kit...
takahashi 10-18-2004, 07:14 PM The best intake is the next one... honesty is anyone know about the absolute gun intake at present??
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 10:10 PM Looks like the Rotary Extreme Intake is the best one for me then. Seems the K&N is too loud, and actually doesnt look as well made. Cwilliams so do you like the sound of it?
If a company is claiming 8-12 hp at the wheels from an intake I wouldn't buy andthing from them based on principle alone. There is no way in hell it's giving gains anywhere near that.
Razz1 10-18-2004, 10:37 PM What about AEM.
They should have a good product.
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 10:41 PM Ike you got a point there. Which intake would you suggest then thats louder and nice sounding but not as loud as K&N?
Honestly I think your money is better spent elsewhere, the stock intake system on the
RX-8 seems quite good. If you just want more noise maybe there is a silencer you can remove like there is for many other cars. It will give you more sound, but won't do things like screw with the maf sensor (will cause problem and even lose you some HP) like CAIs can do on many modern cars. If you still insist on getting a CAI then just listen to the guys that have them and make the best judgement you can, I don't have an RX-8, I'm just a troll :p
Nemesis8 10-18-2004, 11:09 PM Just dropin a filter for now and wait for the Racing Beat, or plunk down the doe and get the SR. Thread closed.
RocketMonkey68 10-18-2004, 11:57 PM Do you have a link to the SR website?
Nemesis8 10-19-2004, 12:17 AM Do you have a link to the SR website?

the Green does make a much louder intake sound.
And just so you know i can get you all the intakes even the HKS units.
But i still love my Green .. In CA i would get busted by a smog check if i replace mine with an after market unit :(.. or i would buy the HKS unit .
RocketMonkey68 10-19-2004, 01:30 AM The Green is a drop in but is not legal in CA? Do you have a link to the Green site? How much for the Green?
RocketMonkey68 10-19-2004, 01:33 AM Hey is the power improvement with the GT3 kit noticeable? Is it worth the $1300? How does it sound?
yes the green is legal in Ca..

RocketMonkey68 10-19-2004, 01:57 AM $95 for a drop in filter!! It better make my 8 sound like a F1 car!
rotarygod 10-19-2004, 02:37 AM What about AEM.
They should have a good product.
It will be a long arm intake with a cone on the end. Go look up some posted info on these types of systems. Since this setup is so easy to fab up from scratch yet it isn't available yet, there must be something else going on to keep it from the market so long. The idle quality on the car at Sevenstock should be a clue.
RXE16T 10-19-2004, 02:45 AM It seems the only intake that is getting the proper r&d done is the Racing Beat one.
So my moneys on them for producing the best intake based on a compromise between performance, sound and aesthetics.
