View Full Version : 05 remote/key incompatible with 04 cars

Hi --

I just picked up my brand-new 04 RX-8 (w/6 mi on the odo) today. Pics to follow later.

While I was there at the dealer I asked the service guys whether the 05 key/remote fob is compatible with the 04 cars, and they said unfortunately it's not.

Reason given to me is that the 05's use a different remote frequency than the 04s.

I assume these guys are right -- has anyone tried or investigated this?

Several of our members that have contacts with Mazda say it will work. No one has tried yet.

It should work... all they have to to is reprogram the key. Alarm frequency is something else, easy to program too.

I think the service techs meant its not compatible "right out of box", i.e. it would have to be reprogrammed to work on 04's.

From what I've gathered it should work after programming

All I wantto know is why theguy who posted this made a smiley facenext to his post. Evenif youre right and theres no wayto get them to work w/2004s thatsnothing to smile about man. For whateverits worth I was alsotold that therethey were incompatible w/2004 Rx8s as --but this came out of the mouthof a dumb uneducated salesman who actuallytook me seriously whenI joked about swapping my 04 foran 05. What kind of morons are they hiring thesedays at Mazda dealerships??

Hey man --

Gosh aren't we touchy.

I was actually trying to do a frowney face and I clicked on the wrong smiley. Must have been emoticon-dislexia.

Anyway, as to who told me the info, it was a tech in the service dept.

Sounds like from this thread that he was correct in that there could be different frequencies used for the 05, but folks here are saying that, in theory, the freq as well as the codes should be able to be programmed.

I think someone has to grab their emoticons and buy a 05 fob and hack the keys for us to find out....

I'm not sure about the frequency change, it could be possible after looking at THIS (http://www.chipcon.com/files/TPMS_RKE_EPN_Automotive_2003.pdf) .

The US is getting a switchblade key though, which has a different button layout, and of course a key/fob together in one unit. I don't know the details, I am in Europe so don't get much information on the US.

I will confirm about the frequency though. As Arnie said, "I'll be back!"

The switch blade key on my VW is great. If they are not too expensive, I would buy one for the 8 also.

Made some local inquiries about the frequency change but came up with nothing. Sorry. :o

In the nicest possible way, could all the 'sheep' out there stop posting comments like "And me", "Me too", etc...
It's a little frustrating when you are subscribed to a thread to gather information, and all you get is token posts from people trying to increase their post count, with no usefull information to add... :p

Pretty sure they're not trying to fluff their postcount. I think it's obvious that they don't want to miss out on a group deal.

Whether those posts are necessary? ehh...you're probably right.

PS I want one as well! Count me in.

PPS - Apologizing in advance to Tokenbrit for the email you're going to receive from my post. :)

My car before my 8 was a jetta. It had the key fob thing and it cut down on your keychain size, was fun to play with when board at work, and was always a conversation topic. I'm in two if you can get em.

I guess the real question here is, who's going to lead this "rag tag" group and follow up on how to do a "group buy"? It's nice that we all want one, but unless anyone is leading the charge for a group buy, it ain't going to happen.

...and, no, I'm not a candidate to do it...... :p

as long as you start with at least 2 "valid" keys it takes 10 seconds.

BTW the front comes off the new remote. the key and the remote are two different parts

the procedure is easy...do a search on the forum for it...don't get charged $80 from the dealer to do something that is so easy

snap-on, in another thread two vendors have been unable to get the actual key to be recognized. Can you confirm this?

Also, when you said the valet keys are the same, does that mean the '05 valet key activated ignition of an '04 car?

snap-on
10-01-2004, 03:25 PM
Just call them and ask the parts dept to punch up the part numbers.

As far as the valet key being the same part number that tells me they haven't incode/outcode range for the 05 model yr.
