I'm collecting my gumption to start doing my own oil changes. After reading through the "Oil change for dummies" thread I realized that I've got most of the tools already. I will need to buy a cap wrench though and I this leads me to a few questions.

Is the smaller stock mazda (or equivelent) oil filter any easier to remove/replace than the larger replacement? I have fairly large hands and find it a little tricky just getting at the dipstick sometimes- especially when things are hot!

Also, the existing filter is the smaller one. Will I need 2 different cap wrenches if I decide to switch to the larger Mobil 1 type, or is there 1 wrench that will fit both?

You -may- need a wrench to remove the original filter. If you install the replacement properly (oil rubber sealing gasket, turn 2/3 of a turn after gasket touches metal) you don't need a wrench. I've never used a wrench after getting off the original filter on any of my vehicles, and the filter has never leaked.

Try removing the filter before draining the oil. If you can't get it off, then you can still drive the car to get whatever you may need to use to get it off. Also, be sure to wipe the sealing surface on the engine before installing the new filter (with the gasket oilled).

I got a supply of filters from Trussville Mazda along with an endcap wrench that fits both sizes.

I'll call some dealers and check it out. I guess if any warranty issues came up it might be an advantage to show that you bought the filters from the dealer's own parts dept...
