I'm not sure if this is appropriate for the RX8 forum, but I did use the 8 as the basis for this pic ;)

Tell me what you guys think... I chopped of the rear door, made the wheel base about 8 inches shorter, made the front air dam bigger, made the exhaust about an inch bigger, and shorted the roof about 15%. I'd hit it :D

If anyone wants the bigger pic (2X the size) or the original RX-8 pic PM me.

Wow that looks FANTASTIC.

The true proportions of the RX-8 design come out in 2-door form. The car looks darn good right now, but because of the extension needed between the wheels, the side profile can sometimes look a little odd.

Shortening it up a bit makes everything fit together perfectly.

I pray every night for for there to be another RX-7. I really really do hope it comes.

I did a little Photoshop job of what I'd love to see....

ooooh Mama, that car is unbelievably gorgeous!!

At first I was thinking the RX-8 design may not work out for the RX-7, maybe not me raw enough, but jeez, if they did what you did here, which didnt seem that ridiculous, it would be gorgeous!!

I'd take it over a 350z :D

Actually not as much of a fan of the hatchback as I am of the conventional trunk. I think the hatch makes the rear end look kind of portly. The flat trunk gives it a sleekness.

Plus look at that blind spot!!

Also an interesting suggestion I saw on the RX7 forum is to put the doorhandles where they are on the 3rd gen, clean up those sides. :p

*Thinking of putting RX-8 order on hold* :o

Here's an update of the progress I made. I have to study for Calculus so no more fun until noon :p:

I made most of the changes you guys wanted (some from the RX-7 Club). I made the rear overhang shorter, lengthened the trunk line to go all the way back to the front of the rear glass (turning it into a hatch), moved the door handle (this will probably change), turned the lights into pop ups, and made the tires about 10% bigger to fill in the gap.

I have a PSD file of all of the changes I made in layers if anyone wants that.

Here's my attempt, I too, don't really like hatch-backs, but I think it would look good with a small trunk-lid type area (just a flattened part of the hatch) I also tweaked the windows a bit to lessen the blind spot. There is still enough space for some good structure in there though. Also tweaked the taillights and the rear bumper a bit, to reproportion with the new shorter wheelbase. Hell, I wouldn't be embarrased driving the thing, that's for sure! Keep in mind, this is really my first photochop...

Damn, those are the best 2-door RX-8 photochops yet.

Anyway, 2 suggestions:

- I think there needs to be more room between the back of the door and the rear wheel, maybe make the door a little shorter?

- The rear hatch glass needs to be shorter and lower (there are no rear passengers in this car), it looks too much like an MX-3 now

CraziFuzzy
03-13-2003, 10:51 AM
well, I shortened mine a little in the back, but the problem is, if you go too short, you lose all visibility out the back window. The rear glass should be at least as high as the drivers eyes, if not a little higher.

Try redoing yours with the rear end shorted like I did in my second pic. I want to see if that's more satisfactory.

I've never liked popup headlights. From an engineering standpoint they dont make sense. Why spend a lot of time making the car aerodynamic and then add 2 wind resistive loads on the front of the car. Also, looking at it mechanically, you dont want to add more moving parts than you need. I personally have seen countless cars with one headlight stuck in the up position

What do you do if one of them sticks and you blow a fuse for the motor that controls them? Go without light?

Just my opinion

actually, I think most of those pop-up lights are vacuum operated, so one little leak, or crud built up in them, makes them not work. They are usually easy to fix, just noone goes through the trouble i think to find the leak/blockage.

Unfortunately, I accidentaly closed PS before I saved the full quality one, so all I have is the WEB optomized GIF. damn... sorry man... I didn't do much over what you had, biggest change was the window shapes, to minimize the blind spot. Just distort the rear window's bottom corner forward, and the front window back a bit. I wouldn't bring the front window to far back though, it doens't look right if it's parallel with the door frame, that is one of the styling concepts behind this car, none of the lines are parallel. That is what makes the car look like its moving, even when parked at the curb. :)

How about this one? I've changed the doors to a more traditional 3rd Gen RX-7 style and added the X-car wheels, to give the 1st Gen retro look.

WOW! those are some really nice PS RX-8's. Kinda a cross between an S2000 front and Viper rear. Very sweet!

in my accord if one stuck they had a maual crank on each to move it up or down and a switch on the dash to rotate the other one up without turning it on so you could have them both up until you got it fixed. you gotta love honda for thinking things thru like that:)

I would like to second that motion. :D Not only are non pop-up lights less expensive to put into cars, they are also lighter, and remove yet one more moving part from the car. Plus the RX-8 headlights are purty... always was a sucker for eyes. :p

Plus, as a bare bones sports car, why more complicated stuff. With an engine with 3 moving parts, why add some other mechanical do-dad to mess up?

These are the best-looking 2-door pictures I've seen so far. Please do another convertible 2-seater (in red or yellow) but with better headrests/rollbars. If the RX-7 convertible looks like the blue one above I will have to get one in 2-3 years.

Good comparison pic, I still don't like the big blind spot... Try stretching the rear window further forward. Unfortunately, I'm at work now, So I can't continue on mine, but maybe tomorrow afternoon I'll be able to do some more on it. Excellent work on the door though, I can't figure out how to create the new lines and still have them look good.

I cut the blind spot almost in half with this reiteration. I also started on a door handle.

I personally really like the handles on the RX-8. Those type of handles are definately the most practical, and the fact that the rx-8's are so sleek looking makes them that much better. I would hate for the RX-7 to go to those back of the door, bend your fingers the wrong way, handles.

That's what I get for trying to play to both ends.. the FD people and the RX8 people ;)

I am a HUGE fan of the third generation RX-7. It's classic design will remain fresh and sporty for many years to come. With this new iteration of the RX-7 though, I think some of the 3rd gen people just simply want a rehash of what once was. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing I would like more than that, but we must realize the financial benefits of using the RX-8 to make the next RX-7.

One must also note that the RX-8 body is on the whole an entirely different creature than the 3th gen. Therefore taking major 3rd gen cues and grafting them onto an RX-8 give it a somewhat choppy appearance.

The two RX-7 cues that I seem to be a fan of are the 3rd gen door handles and the circular door cut. The extension of the rear window makes the rear end kind of sloppy and chubby. My favorite 4th gen iteration is still the first in all actuality, maybe the first green one as well. The others kind of seem like a hodge podge of RX-7 and RX-8, like an attempt to please all the people.

Just my $.02

Still, amazing photochops, cant believe the skill

Thanks for the nice comments :)

Looking back I actually like the first one better too. It would also make the car really cheap using the same tail lights, head lights, body, trunk, windshield, rear windo, etc from the (hopefully by then) mass produced RX8, which is by no means made out of cheap materials.

I do think the next RX7 is going to look a lot like the 8. It would be good marketing, and would allow for better brand recognition. People would know you had a rotary by looking at the body style your car has. Anyways, you can't really show of the rotor more than the 8 does... it almost goes too far.

I think the photochops are pretty good but I would like a little more curve like the 3rd gen. I also think the next RX-7 should have a 3 rotor renesis motor and sissors doors like on a lamborgani. I love the first one the best.

tallguylehigh
03-15-2003, 08:13 AM
And coming in from left field... scissors doors

There is no WAY these will be implemented on and production version of the RX-7. The benefits are merely visual, not to mention the extravagant costs involved in making a door like that.

Heck even the new Lambo, the Gallardo doesn't have them.

Lets keep it styling, but also lets keep it simple. Most people want the RX-7 somewhere between 2600 and 2800lbs. In modern day cars thats quite a task with the safety requiements and what have you. Items like scissor doors and flip up headlights are just things that will add precious pounds.

Jeez I hope the scissors door comment wasnt a joke, or else I spent all this time lookin like a fool. :p

Sorry... trying to keep this thread alive, I think the renderings are too good to let them fade away.

Saw some improvements with some new colors on www.rx7club.com and they look absolutely amazing!

Was wondering if you could possibly try to add the mazdaspeed wheels to the first RX-7 concept you did. Just for a visual treat... thanks!!

Just wondering why a '93 RX-7 would be $20K cdn. Although it looks sweet, I have a hard time spending that much $$$ on a used car but ummmm twin turbo!

Thanks for the support guys. Here are the two I recently made for the RX7 Club.

http://homepage.mac.com/daedel/.Public/rx7designred.jpg

I'd do the wheels, but it's hard to find a pic of that resolution, and I'm not good enough to fabricate them ;) I'd doo the mirrors, but I doubt we will see single piece mirrors again. Several people have also asked about the brakes, but if the car weighs anywhere from 200-600 pounds less it will stop better than just about any car out there (certainly better than the stock FD).

What I can do easily, is make size changes to most of the parts on the car. ie The exhaust, trunk, bumper, skirts, mirrors etc. I can also do most colors, and I'm attempting black right now (man is that hard).

gotta have the double bubble roof. didnt some1 do a 4th gen rx-7 on here a long while ago, that one was really hott

and i thought that "scissor" doors didnt add wieght or cost, its just changing the hinge position, and a few other thigns, but not much.

NO MORE POP-UPS!
