Hey guys, I came upon this rumor on another forum:

"Rumors from Japan have Honda working on an in-line 6 with just 1 liter of displacement. This engine is said to produce over 300 horsepower and redlines around 13K. Probably not much torque there but once your rolling, who cares. That's only important in drag racing."

I did a couple searches but couldn't find anything on this so I was wondering if anyone has heard of this? An engine with over 300hp/L is.....unbeliveable

was it for car or bike applications? It sounds like maybe a prototype GP motorcycle engine or somthing. I can't really see an engine of that nature being made for a car application

1 liter inline-6 seems rather rediculous to me, but maybe there is some point to it... I'm not an engineer. Although I may have heard that from some other forum.. but you know those silly forum rumors that get started and hyped up-

With that small of a piston and making that much power I would think that the motor wouldn't even like to run until 13k, the redline would have to a lot higher than that for 1000cc to produce that kind of power (assuming its NA).

I think back in the day Honda had a 1.5L 600-800hp engine in the F1 car.... I forget the cylinders.. 1L inline 6 with 300 hp @ 13K sounds very impractical on the street. I very much doubt this is true.

that's true Quicklude, but those things were pumping 4-6 bar of boost into 1.5/1.0L straight sixes...

this sucker (at 300bhp/L) would rival the best F1 engines (none of which Honda makes, these days), supposing it's all motor.

btw, 300 hp at 12.8k rpm, those 1.0L would have to make 127 lb/ft of torque... i don't think that's really possible...

Those 1.5 L Honda F1 engines were V6's and had iron blocks. They also produced more like 1,200 hp. They had basically no technical restrictions except the displacement. They did not even run with gasoline but a fuel more akin to rocket fuel. No kidding! Of course they blew about every three laps.

yup, those were the qualifying specials... more bar of boost than you can count on one hand... :D

I would think it's just a rumor. Today's most powerful F1 engines (BMW P83) are 3 liter V10's and make around 900 horsepower. They generally make it less than 1000 miles before they need rebuilds, and they cost an enormous amount of money to develop and produce. Sounds implausable, at least for any kind of widespread production.

Honda has a 990cc V-5 in their current champion Moto GP bike. The engine generates somewhere between 220hp to 250hp. Honda won't say exactly.

If Honda is developing a 300hp Moto GP engine, it would probably be a V-6, not an I-6. The reason is that the engine in a chain driven motorcycle sits transversely in the frame, like in a FWD car.

A V-6 would make the front of bike narrower than an I-6 would. A narrower front is more aerodynamic and more comfortable to hold between your knees. For those reasons, I think Honda would not develop an I-6 motorcycle engine.

Honda did build a street bike with an I-6 back in the 70's, but they weren't at all concerned with aerodynamics back then. They didn't even make a fairing for it.

I could make up rumors like MAZDA is building a brand new quad-turbo charged engine with 1000 hp and it's going on sell this winter and ppl might start spreading it around.....LOL....TOTALLY BS :o

I'm gonna go post this on a VTEC forum and see what they say! :D :p
