View Full Version : April WPB thread.......
paradigm 04-05-2004, 11:44 PM Since nobody else has done it yet I figured "What the hell....I'll start this month's WPB thread."
First.......Orlando meet.........Is anyone else going besides English and I?
Second.......April WPB meet........who wants one, and when?
And lastly we come to MyLadyDeb.
Come on. You got clocked at 87? That's pathetic. I know you can do better than that. Try for at least triple digits next time!!:p
LOL. Seriously though. The sounds you say your car is making certainly doesn't seem normal. Worst case scenario is the "knocking" noise you hear at high RPM's is engine knock...A.K.A "pinging" or "detonation". Definitely not a good thing. Can you be more specific as to what the sound is like? Under what conditions does it happen?
Booster MPS 04-06-2004, 09:04 AM I would love to make the orland trip but I will be in Houston that weekend. I would love to meet some owners in the area - hopeful to get a large group together.
MyLadyDeb 04-06-2004, 11:55 PM okay - found you - I was getting worried. Well my clock said 92 - had it up to 105 just a few miles before....he said 87 - I was thrilled and then brought it down to an 84 ticket. I have been humbled. Okay - now to the sound. What it sounds like is when you have a bad batch of gas and try and floor the gar and get that knocking. As you all know - being so new to the triptronic game - I had asked about the redlining. I've been getting more and more brave and letting it get up there before shifting. Last week in 2nd I went to 6K and heard that knocking so I backed off - thinking it was my imagination. Then on the highway I tried again coming out of the toll booth in Orlando and it happened again just the same way. Now I didn't redline it in 3rd and as long as I shift by 5500 in 2nd I don't hear it. I always use hi-test gas so I know it's that that. Should I keep testing it and pushing it to see if it happens all the time?
MyLadyDeb 04-06-2004, 11:55 PM btw - my ride home from Gainesville - put it on cruise control at 78 - thought I'd have to slash my wrists - lol
MyLadyDeb 04-06-2004, 11:56 PM but....I also have to say - sorry for the multiple posts - my mileage per gallon went from 15 city to 21 highway. What a treat.
English 04-08-2004, 07:25 AM Take the car in and have the techs drive it....or you could drive them around. Hopefully you could get the car to make some noises with them in it.
picosrx8 04-08-2004, 08:58 PM Lady D-
Im another slowpoke with an automatic. I have used the manual alot and a few times pushed it over the edge in first and it beeped at me and shifted for me into second. Last week I was letting her warm up in the garage and I noticed a ticking sound. I dont know if it always been there or not. Its easy to get paranoid with sounds. She seems to be running fine no loss of power and the noise hasnt gotten worse. But if your worried, by all means take it in for a look. We all paid for a four year warranty right? If something is wrong they can fix it before catostrophic failure occurs (and you are stuck on the side of the road). Please keep us posted with the info.
PS. You have been checking your oil level regularly and changing it as directed right?
picosrx8 04-08-2004, 09:02 PM Im out for Orlando...
But in for a local meet pretty much any Saturday or Sunday after this weekend.
Bob The Eskimo 04-08-2004, 10:59 PM there are a few others of us here in WPB. I have seen a few on the road around town. What colors did you all get so we can somewhat recognize one another.
I'm winning blue GT1. with the ecDJ in the rear window(small at the top.)
rx8gator 04-09-2004, 05:01 AM You'll know mine when you see it (At least from the back).
Booster MPS 04-09-2004, 10:15 AM Ti Grey Man Tranny, no appearance pckg., clear corners and zoom zoom plate frame. Have been spotted around city place often.
paradigm 04-09-2004, 10:41 AM Red. no appearance package. Mine's....umm.....loud. You'll know me when you hear me. :p
picosrx8 04-09-2004, 09:07 PM Titanium with a Marine Corps Sticker on the back window. Plus I think Im the only one that rides on 16 inchers (untill I get those dark chrome 5 star 18s).
paradigm 04-10-2004, 07:20 PM Ran into picosrx8 on the road tonight. Awfully clean for a car bought in september. Those exhaust tips were too shiny too. Methinks ya need to drive it more. ;):p
picosrx8 04-10-2004, 09:43 PM Too funny paradigm. Yours looked spotless as well...but it was getting dark! lol. I actually let my wife drive it to work the entire week this week(talk about withdrawals). When she got home today the first thing I did was clean those tips and rims. They both get dirty way to fast!!!!!!Plus I have to compensate with bling since the rest of you guys will smoke my automatic!
picosrx8 04-10-2004, 11:08 PM Hey everyone...What is going on with this L flash M flash or whatever letter they are on? Ive never had any problems so should I forget it? What have some of you done?
paradigm 04-10-2004, 11:22 PM I take the "If it ain't broke don't fix it." approach to the PCM flashes. I get good gas mileage, and I can't say there's a lack of power, so I have no intentions of begging the dealership to reflash my car. But that's just me. :D
MyLadyDeb 04-11-2004, 12:07 AM Hey guys - mine is Yellow with the package - can't miss me and obviously neither does FHP - lol - anyway I've since filled up again and redlined it tonight heading down to Delray - no missing - did it again on the way home - no missing. A friend who drove professionally for Mazda back in the 80's said it's called "premature detonation" (no laughing you guys) - I'm thinking maybe it was the gas. I'll need to recreate it if I want to have it looked at. Anyway, I do check the oil - seems to need a quart every 1500 miles or so. I heard that ticking sound tonight for the first time and wondered if I had heard it before. Still cleaning the bugs off the hood from the Gainesville trip - lol
Genom 04-11-2004, 08:41 AM Ugh, tell me about those bugs. Last weekend I crossed alligator alley 4 times and I had a coating of bugs a centimeter thick. Today is the day to finally get rid of it all since I finally got some bug and tar remover.
paradigm 04-11-2004, 09:32 AM If you can try to find this stuff called "bugaboo". It's the best stuff I've found to remove bug guts. You have to get those guts off fast, because the're acidic, and will eat through the paint. If you've got some other hardcore stuff on there, like tree sap or tar, try mineral spirits (NOT paint/laquer thinner!!!). Acetone works ok too, but if you're not careful the acetone wil damage the clearcoat. Mineral spirits is much easier.
And deb, that "premature detonation" your friend talked about is the same thing as "pinging" or "knocking" that I mentioned earlier. Instead of combusting normally just after top dead center, your fuel was EXPLODING early...........
You're lucky your car is still running. You were quite close to popping your engine..........If this was an older RX7.......you would probably be looking at new motors now.
Booster MPS 04-11-2004, 12:49 PM Guys, I am about to start a thread in the SE forum on a guy that did a clear bra for me yesterday.
Auto Supershield Clear Bra (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25461)
Genom 04-11-2004, 07:58 PM So at what time and where are the SoFla guys heading out from?
I'm in Miami so I'll have to get out early.
paradigm 04-15-2004, 12:06 AM Well, I'm out for orlando. Staged for my first run out at moroso tonight...............
28 psi in the tires + 6.5k rpm clutch drop = SHEARED OFF 1ST GEAR.
1st is gone. Second is on it's way out, and my 5th gear synchros have been failing over the past week or so. I've had enough. I love this car. I truly love it to death, but 2 trannys in 6 months is too much for me to handle right now.
I'm going tomorrow to look into trading it in for an SRT-4 most likely. Keep your eyes open. You guys will get first dibs on my intake, midpipe, and catback. Hell, I'll even install them for you.
I'll still be here on the forums. I consider you guys friends and anytime there's a meet I'll be there. :)
--Jon
MyLadyDeb 04-15-2004, 07:24 AM awwwwww - Jon - so sorry to hear your news. so sorry to hear you say what you said about my engine .... I backed off as soon as I heard the missing - geez - don't scare me like that. I hadn't even heard the beep until then - heard it the other night for the first time.
English 04-15-2004, 09:28 AM Whaaaaat?!?!?!?! You're selling the car? Wow!
Booster MPS 04-15-2004, 09:49 AM
paradigm 04-15-2004, 10:12 AM I'm not sure if I'm selling the car yet. I'm seriously considering it. The only problem is I am WAAAY too upside down on the loan right now. I'm gonna take it in to a different dealership, minus the mods this time (I'll still be selling my intake, midpipe, and catback, so if you guys are interested let me know). I called and the guy said he'd do his best to take care of me. I could hear the "holy shit" in his voice when I told him this was the second time my tranny went down. I told him that I basically needed to know the likelyhood of this being covered, because I just dropped 1100 on it + 700 for the flywheel and install ONLY 1 MONTH AGO!! and I could not afford it again right now.
*sigh* I'm at my wit's end.
Booster MPS 04-15-2004, 10:40 AM Man that is tough. I would just be careful to make the car look like grandma's as much as possible. If it looks like you have been running it as hard as you have (tires/tranny/mods) then you are gonna have a tough time getting them to touch it.
Honestly, I would probably keep the car and put $$ into it as the best financial option. Selling when you are upside down just sucks. The transaction costs are not worth it in addition to the lost. Re-invest and change the driving habits bro.........you gotta know the limitations as this car aint nearly as spunky as it looks when it comes to driving it like a performance car.
I would be sure that if you do get the tranny fixed, make sure they got through everything carefully to make sure it is in good as new condition. I would not want some other lingering problem to come up later. Good luck.
picosrx8 04-15-2004, 11:25 AM Sorry bro...
Razpewton 04-15-2004, 02:20 PM Greetings fellow Floridians. I was just reading your thread and gotta tell ya something I tried from another thread.
In regards to the BUGS, they're bad up here too (Jax), though probably not as bad as Alligater Alley. Anyways, someone mentioned to just put a paper towel on the front after you've driven and spray it down with WATER (yup...water). Leave the wet paper towel over bug splats for 15 minutes or so, then simply wipe off! Trust me, there's no bigger skeptic than myself, but I tried it and I'll be darned if it didn't work! I'm saving a fortune on Bug-n-Tar romover.
Anyway...thought I'd share with my buddies to the south.
Also...sorry about your car Paradigm. Hope things work out for ya.
:D
MyLadyDeb 04-15-2004, 10:58 PM hey thanks for that tip - I'll try it. Brought my RX-8 into WPB Mazda today for the first oil change and some warranty work. Ray's a great guy - the list was a mile long. Got my loaner - told him to keep in a day or so (but not much longer cause I miss it already) and asked him how much for a clean and detail - I figured let them clean the bugs off. When I heard $125 I said - hmmmm - I'll take care of it. So - first thing I'll try is that tip. They gave me a loner Nissan XTerra SUV - BORINGGGGGGGGG - I'm so missing my car - boo hoo
picosrx8 04-16-2004, 08:21 AM If you brought it to City Place Mazda they would have given you a Mazda Six. Plus I took it in for and oil change and tire rotation, and they washed and vacuumed her for free. I dont work for them, but they have been good to me so far.
MyLadyDeb 04-17-2004, 09:51 PM Well gotta say - got my car back today and they did a great job. Did the wash - in and out - for free after all. Not only did the oil change, the recall for the airbag and the mile long list of the and that - they did the reflash, found where the bushing were missing from the bottom of the engine cover (no wonder it was so loose) and I'll be damned if I don't feel a real difference in the car's performance. Maybe I'm just so happy to be out of the SUV - lol - but it feels tighter in the front end, handles much better, much quieter and alot - and I mean alot - more power and smoother shifting (automatic triptronic - least we forget). So far- totally happy with Ray at WPB Mazda. I gave him the website and our thread. I can breathe easier again. Hope you're all having a great weekend. I was liking the look of the Mazda 6 wagon - anyone have any experience with it?
picosrx8 04-19-2004, 07:48 PM Glad you had such a good experience! If you dont mind, what were some of the items on your warranty list. My ashtray flip lid broke after like a month or so. Now the button on the center console is starting to tweek. Wondereing if you were getting the same thing?
picosrx8 04-19-2004, 07:50 PM What's the verdict Paradigm? To sell or not to sell? I hope the latter of the two.
paradigm 04-22-2004, 12:24 AM GOOD NEWS!!!
My car will be ready on friday, with a brand spanking new transmission...........and the best part is.....I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!!!!!! HUZZAH!!!!!:D
Napleton Mazda in Jupiter is teh r0x0r!!!111!!!111!1
picosrx8 04-22-2004, 11:37 AM Glad to hear it man!
picosrx8 04-22-2004, 11:38 AM Anybody want to meet Saturday afternoon/night?
Booster MPS 04-22-2004, 12:18 PM I was debating doing the Orlando trek...........
Great news Paradigm........ NOW SLOW THE F&^*$ DOWN !!!!!!
English 04-22-2004, 08:25 PM I'm headed up to 8-town this weekend.....I think a caravan would be tough for me to manage, so I'll pass all you guys on the turnpike.
paradigm 04-22-2004, 11:37 PM Update...
The tranny didn't make it today, but it is coming, so I may not have my car for the weekend.
Picosrx8........My girlfriend and I should be free this saturday. She broke her wrist pretty bad last week so she's really not feeling the orlando trip. Call me up and maybe we can figure something out. Jon @ 561-248-6747
picosrx8 04-23-2004, 07:34 PM Cool
MyLadyDeb 04-25-2004, 12:11 AM Great news on the car Jon - we would've missed you badly. The cars been driving oh so good since the reflash - is it psychological? Funny thing - I mentioned that the a/c didn't blow consistant cold air and I was wondering if anyone else had complained. Ray said he noticed it too when he took one home for the weekend. Today I see a service bulletin for just that complaint so I guess I'll be finding time to get it in again because it gets too hot. I second that emotion - Jon - slow the f**k down - lol - I had too now you should too - lol. Did everyone see that very cool Happy Birthday Deb announcement on the Orlando website? It totally blew me away and felt good to be 29 again - lol
Booster MPS 04-25-2004, 02:50 PM 29? I thought you were 27 this year !
SMigneco 04-28-2004, 09:03 AM What happened to the meet? I thought this thread was started so that we can setup a meet. I was unable to make the Orlando meet because I had to work. Anyone want to setup a meet in S. FL?
picosrx8 04-28-2004, 03:13 PM Im in...
Time and place? Saturdays are good for me.
Genom 04-28-2004, 04:11 PM I'm heading to Ft. Myers for autocrossing this saturday. Why not join me? :D
MyLadyDeb 04-28-2004, 05:45 PM SunFest this weekend in WPB - hard weekend to get together. Riding shotgun with my son in his Neon so I can get trashed and not worry about driving - see I'm responsible (sometimes). Good thing he's home from Gainesville for the summer - lol. We've already begun the "I'm taking the RX" negotiations.
paradigm 04-29-2004, 12:19 AM I'm down for anything, anytime. My g/f and I just broke up, so it might do me some good to get out of the house.
Booster MPS 04-29-2004, 06:29 AM Next week is Mothers day so we should target maybe something thereafter in May.

Would love too but...(here comes the excuse) I have to do a brake job on my Explorer Staurday morn. So Im not up for anything out of tricounty this week. Sorry man.
Paradigm,
First you break her arm, then you break her heart. How rude! JK! Sorry to hear that man. On the bright side, you now can spend more time with your true love!
picosrx8 04-29-2004, 12:37 PM Lets get a nice sized meet on May 15th or 16th. This gives everyone time to plan ahead.
English 04-29-2004, 02:40 PM Yes!
Booster MPS 04-29-2004, 03:52 PM Booster is in. We should fine somewhere that we can meet and maybe grab a beer just to hang around and chat. Any ideas on a location that would work for that?
Bob The Eskimo 04-29-2004, 09:22 PM I'm in too.
SMigneco 04-30-2004, 06:49 AM This is what I'm talking about! This is great. I am looking forward to meeting some local fellow 8 owners.
This weekend is no good for me either because I am going to the Air/Sea show. I think we should shoot for Saturday 5/22. How does that sound to everyone?
English 04-30-2004, 06:58 AM 5/22...Yes!
picosrx8 04-30-2004, 11:58 AM 5/22 good 4 me
How bout Okeeheelee Park (Forest Hill an 441) to meet for a beer and hang out. Sat afternoon is good if anyone is up to it.
SMigneco 04-30-2004, 12:13 PM I have never been to Okeeheelee park and I don't know where it is but I am willing to go there. Is it in West Palm? Anyone else know of any good meeting places for 5/22? I am not really familiar with the West Palm area. I am closer to Ft. Lauderdale but I don't mind driving to West Palm.
English 04-30-2004, 12:23 PM I was thinking more like a bar where we could have a beer....There's no room for a keg in the trunk.
picosrx8 04-30-2004, 03:37 PM I didnt know what everyone had in mind. We could do RJ Gators, Duffy's, Ale House or whatever. Im up for anything. We could go a little further south for the Broward peeps.
P.S. Maybe not a keg, how 'bout a party ball?!
SMigneco 04-30-2004, 11:02 PM Any of the places picosrx8 mentioned sound good to me. What does everyone else think?
I am going to throw out a few other suggestions so that we keep our options open. We could...
Meet at a pool hall to have a few cold ones and shoot some pool.
Meet at a bowling alley to have a few cold ones and bowl.
Meet at a park to BBQ, have a few cold ones and have a few more. :p
I am really up for anything also. I just think that it will be nice to talk cars with some fellow enthusiasts so I am looking forward to it. Everyone please chime in with suggestions.

Oh come on, man!! I know you're not giving up tha easily!!
There may not be room for a full size keg, but I bet I could squeeze a couple of pony kegs back there......
And let's not forget...............we have back seats!!!!!!!!!!
:D :D :D
I can't carry the beer though.....the way I drive it'd be nothing but foam! :p

I too am an enthusiast of automobiles and alcohol! all above suggestions are good. Maybe the bowling alley or bar are better since we can come and go as we please. If we BBQ we might need a pavillion and stuff.
SMigneco 05-02-2004, 01:30 PM I agree that the bowling alley or a bar would probably be a better idea. Perhaps we should start a different thread for this entitle "May 22nd S. FL meet," just so that it is more organized.
I am not seeing a lot of responses to this idea. Are there not that many 8's in S. FL? I haven't seen that many on the roads but I know they are out there. Getting together with your fellow 8 owners will be fun. You get to meet new people with something in common and you will at least know that they have great taste in cars!
Like I said, I am not familiar with the W. Palm area so I cannot suggest which bowling alley or bar we can meet at. Does anyone know of a good one?
I live in Coconut Creek off of Sample & Lyons.
Booster MPS 05-03-2004, 10:24 AM The weekend of the 21st is a tough one for me as the GF will be in from TX visiting. I am not sure if I can commit to that one but I will keep the option open. The prior weekend is ok by me.
SMigneco 05-03-2004, 10:27 AM Bring your girlfriend along! Spouses are welcome I'm sure. My wife hasn't decided if she is going or not but I'm sure there will be significant others present. The more the merrier!
picosrx8 05-04-2004, 11:27 AM Done. The new thread is up for the meet.
