I'd been having some odd observations about my TCS light not blinking since I recieved the 'L' calibration flash over the last couple weeks, as mentioned in this thread:

After I tried several times yesterday to get the TCS to kick in on slippery roads after it snowed, my curiousity turned into concern that my DSC/TCS was just not working anymore. Since there was a thread yesterday about the PCM learning mode after the NVRAM was cleared, I was wondering if I did anything during the learning mode that would cause this... and then I remembered on the first drive after I did the brake-tap 'L' reflash, I disabled DSC/TCS by holding in the DSC button for 10 seconds.

It seemed like a long shot, but my theory was that a forced disable of the DSC/TCS during the PCM learning mode made it start ignoring signals from the sensors.

If this was true, then it seemed I could reverse it by clearing the NVRAM again and not touching the DSC button during 'PCM' learning mode, so I tried it today. I did the brake tap, got the OPG sweep, and drove off to go through the car wash. On the way out of the wash, with my wheels still wet, I pulled out onto the road with a light clutch drop to induce wheel spin and a bit of tail wag, and BAM!- DSC/TCS kicked in with the familiar blinking light and corrective braking.

To summarize- if you reset your PCM by clearing your NVRAM, don't do anything out of the ordinary during the first couple of 're-learning' drives, especially disabling DSC/TCS. I would also not do anything to put the motor under extra load, like lights, A/C, etc so that ignition timing is baselined correctly.

Cool... I assume it's easily repeatable, but dunno how important the timing of turning off the DSC/TCS is after the reset. Looking forward to seeing what you find...

Actually, this could be really good news for those people who's aftermarket wheels don't have the TPMS sensors on them. Sounds like this might be the simple way I've been looking for to disable the TPMS.

 

Baller, no offense, but what does 1 thing have to do with another?

 

Highly doubtful. Why? Because there isn't a PCM learning mode that lasts for only two operation cycles (drives, whatever). The PCM is always "learning" - it constantly is checking parameters and using that feedback to make fine adjustments. Perhaps it uses the most recent two operation cycles, but this learning doesn't stop, it's continuous. In other words, there isn't a learning mode that shuts down after two drives.

Sinceyou guys are talking about resetting the PCM I am starting to wonder if thebetter gas mileage hysteria really true. I havean automatic Rx8so smoother shifting reallydoesnt matter much to me I havent gotten the L reflash done yet. But better gas mileage definitely is somethingI would really desire.

I am thinkingthat the reason why everyone is under the impression that the gas mileage has improved is b/c when they do the brake test to checkif the oil gauge sweeps they are also making the PCM reset. Wouldnt resetting the PCM cause a slightchange in the mileage regardless ofthe L reflash since you are making the car relearn things again??

I've had the "L" reflash and my gas mileage is the same as it was before.

The car is smoother and quicker at lower rpm's tho- very nice!

 

Well I have an automatic Rx8 so the smoother quicker low RPMs wont mean too much for me w/this engine. I guess that if the mileage doesnt go up thenI wont even bother hassling the service reps anylonger since thats all I want and everything else in mycar is fine right now.
