I'm definitely interested in this product too, but I would like more information as well, and would like to see it unmounted also.
If possible I also would like to see a dyno sheet vs stock. other then that the price is right and would definitely purchase.

Would anyone running the stock exhaust system reap any benefits. I would assume not much as we would still be bottle-necked by the stock cat and muffler.

Will you be offering a package deal between this and your exhaust?

EDIT: I would also like to see some numbers on this. I'm more interested in exhause velocity for scavenging, but this is probably best represented by hp/tq.

Wow, these are nice... now if only they'd do something as a replacement for the GReddy header...

Well the intro price is $250. Can't get a better deal than that. $750 plus shipping can't really be beat, especially for these two items :0) We will post a plot soon. The current test car is down while a few parts are being swapped.

Yep shipped today. Its going to be long while before this gets installed, at least a few months.

I dont plan on swapping it in till it get my new engine built and sent to me. I had a used engine purchased but the deal fell through so now I am working on contracting a shop to build me a new engine. Its going to be a neat little engine I am hoping it will make some big power numbers ever before the SC go's in.

Heat is going to be a big problem in my engine bay as well. it is my plane to cote the inside of the header then fashion a heat shield of some sort. My current exhaust set up is a full 3"s with a bhr mid pipe and exoctic speed super quite exhaust. I may actually have to cut of one of the resonators on the sep up as it shrinks internally at least a half inch or more. At this time the sound is not loud at all.

I may be able to send some pics of what the unit looks like once it is sent to me.

Not individually port matched, they were built off the same jig. And they are stainless steel

Let me try to answer, I have the GL header in my basement, not yet installed. First, I've been able to find only one reference as to the size of the exhaust outlet from the "irons", in a ~2007 exchange between RotaryGod and TeamRX8: Ends = 47.6 mm x 27 mm, Center = 47.6 mm x 22 mm.

The stock manifold at the mating surface is Ends = 52.5 mm x 36.5 mm, Center = 52.5 mm x 23.5 mm. The stock manifold then very nicely and smoothly turns the rectangle into a circle with a ID pipe diameter of 43 mm.

Now the GL header flange is a bit more complicated, with the mating surface and the "pipe surface" being different, with a taper milled in between. GL mating surface: ends = 51 mm x 28 mm, Center = 51 mm x 28 mm. On the pipe side: Ends = 40 mm x 37 mm, Center = 39 mm x 25 mm. The pipe ID = 41 mm. The transition from GL flange exit to pipe is very abrupt.

How to make sense of this. If one ignores the rounded corners of the rectangle, one can track the area (in square mm) of the exhaust from exhaust runner to exhaust pipe. (non-mathematical use of < and >)

Stock Ends: 1285 < 1916 > 1452
GL Ends: 1285 < 1938 > 1480 > 1320

Stock Center: 1047 < 1233 < 1452
GL Center: 1047 < 1428 > 975 < 1320

Good, bad, ugly? The CW from the past (RotaryGod) and more recent (Eric Meyer) is that the exhaust system per se is hopelessly dominated by the siamesed center port and the 90 deg bends coming out of all ports. "Tuning" headers don't work as well as it does on other cars. RG argued that the pipes and flange exits should be smaller to keep flow velocity high. Is that "975" neck down a problem? Dunno.

I chose to modify center port somewhat however. I rounded sides of the pipe edge of the center GL header flange to reduce the abrupt change (23.5 to 41 mm) into the pipe. I did a similar thing to "smooth" that transition on the end ports as well. It took about 2 hours for the center port and .5 hr each for the end ports with a Dremel #8193 stone. I didn't change the size on the mating surfaces at all.

Is it the right thing to do? Haven't a clue. Blindly increasing the flange port size however, I think is unwise. I have a stock manifold installed that was enlarged all the way out to the gasket (Ends = 68 x 42 mm, Center = 68 x 38 mm) and am pretty convinced it's the cause of a rather large high-rpm deficit in hp measured on a dyno, as well as very black spark plugs. An uncertainty is the actual exhaust runner size as I was able to find only the one reference and haven't measured it myself.

The pipes are non-magnetic which means stainless. The port flange and triangular mating flange to the midpipe are, however, quite magnetic. Also (as you may be able to see in the pic), after washing the grinding dust out with water, the flange showed light rust. Some stainless will do that, like the kind used in most OEM exhausts.

Is the GL header worth $250? Most likely, if there are no fitment issues. One thing it lets me do that's not easily done with the OEM manifold is to add a bung for an EGT gauge. Racing? Try a TeamRX8 or Eric Meyer style system for $2000. Not in my budget though!

Is installation exactly the same as the Racing Beat Header shown HERE (http://www.racingbeat.com/manuals/16133%20RX8%20Header.pdf)?

Was wondering. How long should it take for a muffler shop with a lift, to install this header?

It takes about an hour start to finish..you have to remove passenger side motor mount and loosen the drivers side top bolt....push the motor over...n then it's fairly straight forward re/re of the manifold....as long as you get the O2 sensor out easily :)

van
03-17-2012, 05:23 PM
Only an hour? I'm getting install quotes from some local shops stating 3-4 hours minimum at around $350-$380+ which doesn't make any sense.

Uh, 1 hour? :dunno:

No way, unless you have some secret method. I just discovered it won't go in without also removing the midpipe - though maybe I can shove it back enough. Otherwise the two crossbraces and rear O2 sensor gotta come off too. This header is much "fluffier" than the manifold so it won't go in through the same gap that the manifold came out of. The Racing Beat instructions don't refer to that step, so perhaps their's is more compact. Of course working without a lift makes things slower and more difficult. Right now, $300 for an install sounds like a bargain.

^ I think the aprox. 1 hour install is using a lift and I believe he's done it before. I contacted RB and they also said 1-2 hours on a lift. If you look at the RB header pics here (http://www.racingbeat.com/RX8/Exhaust-Headers/16133.html) and here (http://www.modified.com/projectcars/modp-1101-project-rx-8-exhaust-side-tuning/index.html), it looks even more 'fluffier' less compact, as the center and end pipes seem to extend outwards, way more than the garageline.

Were you able to install yours?

Yes, finally. The Law of Unintended Consequences kept me from raising the engine enough, which I think, caused problems. I'm running the Mazmart oil pressure mod, which means there's a taller Series II filter on top of a Prosport adapter. This blocked the engine against the firewall when lifted.

However, the rear header mount doesn't fit well, see pic. Either the angle, some weld goop, threads, or something kept the stock bolt from threading into the nut properly. I had to use a 5/16-18 bolt to fit through the nut. It's not a show-stopper, but is annoying.

^ How long did it take you to do the install? Also, do you feel any difference in power (and is it louder)?

I'll take the Fifth on the first question. It took me at least two hours to jack up all four corners of the car, put them on jackstands, and figure out how and with what to lift the engine. The front, middle and rear crossbraces have to come off to be able to get the midpipe out of the way. Etc.

It won't be running for another few days until other work is finished.

lol wut, why did it take you 2 hours to lift the car to jack stands?

its like 3 minutes a corner for me, then I use a 14 in long 2x4 to lift the motor with the same jack that i lifted the car with.

Motor mounts loosened within 30 minutes and motor up in another 5.

You can get the bottom cross members off in about 15 minutes.

Then you can remove the stock header.

I would say 2 hours and you should be good.

Note* I use impact tools

Agreed, however it took me a bit longer.

I had problems with the motor mount, that bitch was on there tight!

I also had a manifold bolt strip the housing threads on the way out.
Thanks god I own a tap and die set

I'm also slower due to beerrrzzzzz

Good for you. I do not wish to engage in a contest of "who's THE MAN". I do not have impact tools. I do not have optimal equipment, like appropriate hydraulic jacks. To do one corner, stock scissors jack up, jackstand, jack down, 2x6 underneath, jack up, jackstand, more 2x6 underneath, jack up, jackstand. Etc. I do not have a dedicated car shop (tools have to be retrieved from the basement), nor have I done this job before (though I have done many others). Finally, I make no claims about being fast, but I suspect most hobbiest first-timers to this job won't complete it in 2 hours.

YMMV.

I wasn't trying to say I am "The man"... I was just curious why it took you 2 hours to lift the car up to stands. Makes sense now, scissor jack is not optimal to use.

I was merely justifying the 2 hour estimated install time.

Okay! A pro or pro/am is most always gonna be much faster.

Just had the dealer install mine a few hours ago, and it took them 1.5 hours. Of all places, they were by far the cheapest.

With this header installed there is some noticeable power above 4500 RPM, and is a lot louder in the high RPM's as well. It also seems to backfire more often too. (I have a full TXS exhaust with race pipe with MM tune)

I also notice there is a slight burning type smell inside the cabin (as noted in the RB instructions), but hopefully it will dissipate after a few drive cycles.

+1. Perhaps I should note that the header comes with bolts, instead of studs, for the connection to the air pump pipe. On the front one, the bolt is too long to press on the flange - I had to use a shorter one to get it to seal.

If you are running a full exhaust including header and no cat, then why continue to run the air pump? Cap that bung off and remove that ugly pump from your engine bay :)

'Cause I am running a cat (high-flow, metal substrate). I'd rather smell my date's perfume, etc, than stinky rotary exhaust. :naughty:

Your going to blow through that pretty quickly with your new headers. :)

Maybe. I've got 10k miles or so on this cat, still no CEL and it looks brand new inside - so far. Magnaflow #59959. I also have an EGT probe mounted right in front to monitor temps going into it. Will see if that changes significantly with the header. I suspect the temps will be lower due to increased heat loss compared to the manifold.

Just to update.

There is a slight hiss noise or 'sssss' coming from the header when you accelerate. I also had noticed this 'hiss' noise when I had a header installed in my previous car. A quick google search tells me it's normal with an aftermarket header - due to it not having a heat shield and thinner walls in the runners.

The loud drone noise when cruising at highway speeds is now noticeably quieter.

Also that 'burning smell' when the header was first installed, is now gone.

I'm not hearing any hiss at all, in spite of having no firewall insulation. You sure there's no leak? If they didn't use a short bolt as described in post #118, then there could be an exhaust leak where the air injection pipe connects.

Not sure if they used a short bolt, but I had it double checked and there are no exhaust leaks at all.

In my experience and from what Ive been told by those that have been around longer than me [rx7 multiple gens] it doesnt get much better than TXS. One of the few long standing rotary suppliers.

Nope, more like a brand problem than cheap headers in general. OBX always had fitment issues.

I haven't had, nor heard of any fitment issues with these TSX Garageline headers. These headers are $700 on the Garageline site.

The ONLY issues with TSX are related to wrong sized bolts/springs.

I just installed mine here in my home garage. It's a well constructed part. I have my OE muffler with a TXS catt'ed mid-pipe with an added resonator to tone it down to the volume I wanted. Normal cruising, it's very quiet almost OE. When you get on it or have a bit of a load, you can hear the classic rotary raspiness from the headers. Remember the Veilside RX-7 in Tokyo Drift? Sounds a bit like that.
