Need some help / advise

First off here's a few things I think the members here should know, I'm security forces in the active Air Force and I just moved up to Nellis AFB in NE. I obviously needed a car and turned to the RX8 for it's obvious bad-assery and Rotary engine. So short story is, I work ALOT and don't get alot of free time. But about a day or two after buying it I noticed that the Check Engine Light started flashing at high RPM's (i'd say only above 6000 while at freeway speeds) while on the freeway. Also I don't know a ton about cars and only a little about rotary engines in general.

The dealer said they just replaced the starter but I don't think that would have much to do with it. There is a slight smell of oil coming in from the vents but also I would guess that's due to a shitty air filter. The light is always flashing and never stays solid and always goes away after I turn the car off. It's probably happened 10 times or just about every time I jump onto the free way.

Also I did lurk to try to find an answer but I really just don't have the time to search thru everything. Car has about 45,000 miles on it and runs fine, no loss of power but also has a minor grind going into 4th gear while in high RPM's

Should I just take it into the dealer or local on base shop to get code error readings? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also as a foot note I hear RX-8s need to be driven quite often and pretty much right after I bought it I learned their is a large chance I will be deployed in January is there anything I need to know about keeping it sitting in holding for a long time or should I just let some of the family here drive it every couple weeks? Thanks again.

Flashing CEL under power is a (serious) misfire.

Your plugs are due for a replace, if keep your foot on it when it's flashing you'll need a new motor too.

I did do a search, and was more inclined due to my general lack of knowledge of cars and rotary engines that perhaps a collective of problems presenting themselves in a combination may possibly direct to a certain type of problem.

Like I said before I do not have any loss of power at all in any of the gears. Now like I was asking would the simplest thing to do be just to take it to the shop and run the error codes immediately or is my situation not that big of a problem and it could probably wait for the weekend?

when your car cries for help, it's best not to leave it.
One issue in this car can start of a chain of events that could become critical...

While waiting for the news, I'd recommend reading through the stickies in the forum to get to know your engine better

Indeed and I plan to become at least competent, I just needed an answer in the mean time for the here and now. It should be ok for another day or two. At least one can hope.
